Elite 4435 | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty RidiculoSnarky Almost Intelligent-Charming Manatees PART 4 - Full kgore - 2012-08-29 10:11 PM So after trying to deal with the school issues all this week, money stress at home, and general work stress, I have been rather grumpy/depressed. That being said, today an interesting possibility has popped up. First off, I have 2.5 to 3 weeks before I know the school status (whether I can finish my final two semesters or drop out due to poorness and no financial aid...i.e. loans). Today, on the AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums) website a job offer showed up. It is a Lead Reptile Keeper position at Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle---the pay rate is DOUBLE what I make now, I would STRICTLY work with reptiles/amphibians as well as doing some local (in situ) work with animals, I have the qualifications they require, and I would get to work with Komodo Dragons (one of my 'dream animals' that I always have wanted to work with). My sister lives near Seattle, so I would have a place to hang until I found a place to live there. Clint is fine with the idea, and there is golf, so he wouldn't be too bored--and there are a few pool service companies there too, so he could find a job. In other words, I bet this could work. I am going to wait until I get my decision from the school--If I get to finish school, I will do so and find something else down the road. If the school is a no-go, I will send in an application.
Sooooo Salty....Are there lots of triathlons and obstacle course races up there in your neck of the woods? I would apply anyway....keeping ones options open. If the school thing comes through then you can politely decline the job offer that will surely come your way. And you get to hang out with Salty - I wanna move to Seattle! |

The more help/opinions the better! Sweet---lots of options for races!! |

Master 3888 Overland Park, KS | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty RidiculoSnarky Almost Intelligent-Charming Manatees PART 4 - Full So.....In the KS forum a guy posted about a tri at a local lake community. I know that lake is private, gated etc. so I went to the website and sure enough, the website states the race is open to "members and their guests". Turns out they're going to be a little flexible there and let a few non-residents race. Funny thing is that some business acquaintances of mine live there and their father passed away a couple of years ago. The memorial service was at the Lake's clubhouse which overlooks the lake. When I was standing in the clubhouse I mentioned to J.R. my business acquaintance, that the lake would be a great place for a tri. He said that he knows of a couple ladies that swim all the time in the Lake and that there's a bunch of folks who ride bikes etc. So I called J.R. and asked if he knew anything about the tri, he said no but that he'd get a call in the next few days to be on standby service as an EMT. He's a volunteer fireman and EMT certified, something like that. He also said he'd let security know I was his guest for the race etc. and that he'd be there Sat. morning. How Cool is that! OK so the bottom line is that I'm dong a sprint on Saturday morning. 500 m swim, 9 mile bike, 3 mile run. So there should be a long run or long ride happening the same day so I'm thinking long run later in the afternoon. Gonna be a long day :P |

Like almost 2 a month I swear. When I'm not on my phone I'll send you links to my favorite ones. Also, Woodland park is a fantastic zoo. We go frequently. It's adjacent to Green Lake which is home to a TON of 5Ks and is a good place to OWS (especially because they don't allow motorized boats) I can give you more info. Just ask away. I'm pretty connected with the city and knows the ins and outs.So after trying to deal with the school issues all this week, money stress at home, and general work stress, I have been rather grumpy/depressed. Veteran 940 Citrus Heights, CA | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty RidiculoSnarky Almost Intelligent-Charming Manatees PART 4 - Full Awesome. I went to the zoo there about 4 years ago (I was on a day layover on my way to Amphibian school--my sister INSISTED that we go--who was I to argue? ) and I really did like it--great set ups all the way around. As you know the ins and outs, do you happen to know if there are a lot of 'pool guys' out there (i.e. people that clean swimming pools for a living)? As that is Clint's profession, I would hate to think he'd have to learn something new (hard to teach old men new tricks, you know...). I told him he can just go get a job at the Aquarium--its just like pool cleaning--only EVERYONE pees, poops, and eats in the pools!

Seattle | Subject: RE: Yanti & Salty RidiculoSnarky Almost Intelligent-Charming Manatees PART 4 - Full kgore - 2012-08-29 11:27 PM well, as I'm sure you know, the climate doesn't encourage a lot of residential pools but that's not to say there aren't any. The city has quite a few public pools (I can think of 6 off the top of my head) not sure who handles those. I might have a contact but I'll have to get back to you.Awesome. I agree with Jo. I don't know about the zookeeping field, but my daughter is currently finding out that waiting and making the decision might lead to no availability of the job, since someone else jumped on it. And while I agree that education is important, I believe that living life is more important. You have an opportunity to try something completely new (live in the Seattle area), yet remain in a field that you obviously enjoy. There are schools in the Seattle area and online. Those might give you the opportunity to complete your degree down the line. There are times in life where change is a bit easier and one of those times is before you are married, have kids, take care of parents, etc. We went through a major life upheavel with a 12 yr marriage, 2 kids and business ownership and it was tough. But I did the same thing 10 years earlier and it was much easier, since there were less ancillary concerns. My 2 cents, take it for what it's worth. |

IF you got the job but DID get to continue with school and wanted to stick with school, you won't burn bridges by being appreciative and respectful but declining because it turns out you do get to continue your schooling. I'm sure any reasonable employer would understand that decision. But then again, like Chris said, you could finish your degree elsewhere AND have more funds to do it if you got this new job. And with the passion you have for reptiles (I've got to think it's rare lol ) I think you would definitely be a top candidate for this job. Plus Salty is in Seattle - what more reason do you need!!?? |
