First the bad - then the good:

DUring the 5K this morning, my right calf/achilles continued to bug me. I finished near the BOP in 42 minutes and change. I was proud of my son who managed to outrun me despite not training a lick but at least he did it.

    Now the good:

I went out for a swim when I got home and swam for the first time in 10 months without any serious shoulder pain. I was pretty jazzed about that! I think I swam almost 900 yards which is my longest since my HIM last AUgust. Yea!

Dave: sorry about the calf, but yea for the shoulder!!

Jenn: Lucifer! I nearly lost my powerade through the nose when I read that!

Race went great! I nailed all of my goal times/speeds, even though the bike course was hillier than I expected. This was my first time doing this race. Ended up second in my division, so yea for another metal to clutter up my tri area! Race report is up (http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=542516) if anyone is interested.

After I got home I had to head right out for a 2.5hr bike ride to finish off today's scheduled long ride. That sucked. I went on my hilly route. That sucked. It seemed way longer than normal and I think the hills got bigger! Tomorrow is a long run/ short ride reverse brick and then comes taper, which can't get here soon enough!

Sitting here drinking coffee, trying to get up the motivation to get dressed and go for the last long run before my HIM taper begins. This morning I sit here completely not sore after spending four hours yesterday engaged in strenuous physical activity. I've come a long way from the couch potato who saw triathlon in the London olympics and thought --huh, I could do that. Oh the hubris!! I didn't know then what I was getting myself into! I've learned so much. I have so much more to learn. Thanks to each of you for your help and encouragement along the way.

Congrats to you Terminator not only on finishing second! (YEA!!!) and bringing home the bling (Booyea!) but on finishing your long ride after coming home. That takes real commitment and will help you crush your HIM in just a few weeks.

    Proud of you!

Not hubris - just a keen eye to be able to match your skills with the sport! So not only where you right - but you are setting a standard for consistency that is second to none in this group.

OK - now it's time to put down the coffee cup and get your butt out there!

Nice work Jenn on the long run! You're getting close! OH and Hungry Like a Wolf is such a good call. So too is the coke (but don't forget to do a few runs with Red Bull - it sucked when they ran out of coke).

As for the ice bath... brutal

    Prost!

Dear Alan - I went out for another ride with the know it all bike guy who keeps putting triathletes down. I will pay for you to come down here and give him the Lance look. He kept telling me to do things that I know are wrong and he keeps putting us tri guys down. 56 miles of it was hard to take. I wish I had your skills knowledge to shut him up but right now I need to be riding with him because I know he will make me faster (my first 27 miles were 1.5 mph faster than my average) and my cadence is really getting better.

So today's 56 miles was ultimately a victory - it was ,the longest ride since last August and my fastest - but the flat tire I had and the rain I rode through were not fun. What was fun was buying the beer that will take me to 700 different beers tried on UnTapped.

    Rowdy Rootbeer
Destihl Wild Sour Counter CLockwise - so fricking good
    Ballast Point - Grunion

In other news - Charles got tripped up by bad weather at Racine 70.3. Thunder cancelled the swim and they had to shorten the course. If you are friends with him on facebook, please reach out.

One last thought - I'd like to bring back goals of the week as a way to hold ourselves accountable. I've got a lot of work in front of me and I'm looking for some accountability!

DQ's GOALS - Lose 2 LBS by recording my weight daily (because the less weight I carry will lead to fewer injuries and will make me faster), 10 minutes of PT per day (because doing so will help me avoid pain), ice and roll my calf 2x per day (I eventually need to get my run on... 3 miles aint cutting it and aqua jogging is boring as hell), swim with no pain (because swimming with pain sucks) by watching my form

Long run this morning--9 miles. It was rough, but done. Afterwards I went out for what was supposed to be a 30' high cadence ride. I hit a patch of gravel at 16' trying to avoid a car driving on the wrong side of the road. Went down hard, but am largely ok--some bruises, scraped knee, etc., but intact. My bike is going into the shop tomorrow--it clicks now.

Oh no, Gretchen!!! I'm glad to hear you're okay!! That stinks you have to bring your bike in - hopefully it's nothing major and you will be in and out.
Read your race report - nice bike speed and kudos for crushing your goals for the race!! Well done!!

That's terrible! So sorry to hear about your bike but thrilled you are ok. I hope your LBS can get your back out onto the road ASAP. And what the heck was up with the driver on the wrong side of the road???

Whelp, I somehow managed to have a relapse to my L4/L5 spondylolisthesis.  In searing pain right now, and I have no idea how I tweaked it.  I rode 60' on the training on Friday morning, felt fine, then my back started stiffening up.  It got worse over the weekend and now I pretty much can't do anything.  Doctor appointment Friday - they cant fit me in until then.  F#%#$%!!!!

I'd like to bring back goals of the week as a way to hold ourselves accountable. I've got a lot of work in front of me and I'm looking for some accountability!

    Here are mine:

    1. Hit all the rides & runs on my plan (3 of each).
    2. Get into the pool at least once (this is always the first thing I drop when I have something more interesting to do).
    3. Core workouts 4x (just not a habit yet).
    4. Get my resume sent to the 4 jobs I found over the weekend, and find some more.

I got in a 5k run after dropping off the kids at school this morning, and have a short ride planned for after lunch. If I go fast enough, the head wind will cancel out the crushing heat, right?

Ah Mike, I am sorry to hear that. Having been dealing with back issues since March I can totally sympathize. I swear I'd rather break a bone than deal with back issues. Hoping you'll start feeling some relief soon so you can get back at it. Let us know how you're doing and if there is anything we can do.

Yea for the long ride! ...and the beer!!

I was wondering if anyone was racing Racine - I saw they had cancelled the swim and shortened the bike portion. On the one hand it's nice, on the other, when you train for something for so long you kind of want to actually do it for that sense of completion. I hope Charles is doing okay with it. (maybe he should come join me at MT! He's all trained for it!)

Goals: keep on with the plan as best I can and maintain my sanity (tough weekend mentally this past weekend).

    - also, get to the LBS to get my bike adjusted. It's a bit of a pain from the standpoint that they are closed on Sundays and Mondays and do admin work and training on Tuesdays so the soonest i can go is Wednesday (and it's a 45 minute drive one way....but there's an awesome Mexican joint, The Mad Taco, right near the shop where I can get a mean chicken burrito the size of Texas....so not all bad.)

The hardest part over the past week is that with hubby and oldest away, I have my 9 year old here and I harbor huge guilt working out and not doing things with him. He was in camp last week for a couple of hours each day, but that's not much time for me to get anything done. I did my long bike Friday so camp helped with the portion I rode outside. Sunday I started to do a spin in the living room while we watched a movie together but my back and shoulder hurt enough after a half hour I stopped...and almost threw the bike out of the window. It was a good teaching moment for my kid - see, adults get frustrated but we have to figure out a way to work the problem and sometimes it can't be fixed that minute. So we finished the movie while I did PT and we went to ride go-carts. He said it was his favorite thing he's ever done.
Today is my actual rest day but after watching American Ninja Warrior last night my 9 year old wants to work out, so I'm thinking we'll do a little weight session together here at the house, maybe some yoga and I'll do PT. All rides will have to be on the trainer until hubby and oldest get home - so intervals tomorrow.

Charles is doing IMWI so he's good to go for the summer! I on the other hand am jealous that youre doing IMMT - you are going to love it! Especially with all the hurdles youre having to go through to make it happen. Way to be a mom and a triathlete!

2300m at masters this morning. I was a little achy after my crash yesterday when I first got into the water, but after a while it got better and turned into a pretty good swim.

Took the bike in and already have it back. Three hour turn around when the repair shop is full to the brim with bikes is what loyally shopping at your LBS will get you! Nothing too badly wrong with it, just bent the rear derailurer (sp?) and then the brakes and shifters had to be put back into alignment too (which I could have done myself, but since it was going in anyway...). All in all, I was pretty lucky with no significant damage to either me or my bike.

    Goals:
1.) hit all workouts on my plan
2.) get more sleep to help me heal and repair
3.) try not to go crazy when taper starts on Thursday.

My spine ortho guy called in prednisone which is helping take the edge off. I got in a 30 minute swim this morning and my back was OK and just a little stiff towards the end (which is normal for me anyway). Going to try a quick trainer ride at lunch.

So glad to hear about your body and your bike! True, I know we've discussed the benefits of making friends at a LBS but a three hour turn around shows just how much they like and respect you and what you are doing! When ever I walk into my LBS, the guys know that a six pack can't be too far behind!

Keep on healing and enjoy a well-earned taper!! When is your race?

Hope you feel better soon Mike! A bad back is no joke (so says the guy with two bulging discs). Hope the prednisone keeps working its magic!
