Veteran 118 Somerset, PA | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Tri Sam - 2011-07-30 10:21 PM Everyone- So far I've got 11 people down as interested in meeting prior to the athlete's dinner, and attending together (this does not count whomever you are with, but of course don't leave your family or significant others out if they are planning on attending the dinner with you. I'm thinking of making a sign on poster board that says,"BT Meet Up," or "Beat Me Up," or "Eat at Joe's"...or something to flag everyone down. More details later. Peace. Sam, count me in for the meet up at the dinner. Peter B |

Veteran 118 Somerset, PA | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread At Ocean City MD with the family for a week of vacation so I get to take advantage of some flat terrain for a change. Yesterday was a 2:45 long run and 1:15 ride. Run worked out to 20 miles in 84 degree weather. A good confidence booster. Today was my long ride so I ambled around the coast line for 112 miles and then did my one hour brick run. Definetly feeling the strain of the long training hours but also actually starting to think that I can do this. Two things I learned on the ride today is that Maryland drivers are much more courteous then Pennsylvania drivers and chicken farms really smell bad! Peter B |

Member 24 Middle of Nowhere, Manitoba, Canada | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread marathongirl11 - 2011-07-30 1:48 PM Unfortunately, that really (almost - no derailleur cable land...lol) happened to me. My gear cable (front) snapped at mile 48 at IMWI '09. I was able to get it fixed; however, it took WAY too long (3 seperate stops) and I was not able to make the time cutoff at mile 95 (missed by 13 minutes). I was pulled from the course. It was a living nightmare to say the least...... Anyway, as for IM dreams/nightmares, yes, in the one I tend to have ALOT; I never take off my wetsuit from the swim and end up riding my bike with it on! Ugh....could you imagine!?! Also, just the other night, I had a dream that I completely missed the start of the race ~ don't know what the h*ll I was doing, but totally missed it. Then, I realized I never even packed my Transition bags or anything....I woke up in a total panic....it really scared the crap out of me!! I laughed out loud reading about missing the race start! My tri-dreams have always involved being unprepared - missing the race start or forgetting to bring gear and/or transition bags! I actually got into a daze while swimming the other day and started day-dreaming about 'what if' I missed the swim start. It's bad when it's a dream, but worse when it's a self-induced thought! Just to be extra crazy, I actually set 3 alarm clocks before any race I do... And as a side note - I did IM Wisconsin in '09 as well. Fortunately, my bike went smoothly. I can only imagine how frustrated you would have been - hopefully that won't be the case this year!! Edited by JR1981 2011-08-02 10:52 AM |

Veteran 329 | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Over the last two months I have done the following--I eat anything and everything from Sunday Evening through Thursday. Then on Fridays I start to pay attention to what I am eating in preparation for the big weekends of training. Saturday and Sunday mornings I eat what I plan to eat the morning of the race. Saturday night I eat a lot, but fairly healthy. A buddy of mine in Louisville just texted me that this was the 3rd hottest month of July in the last 100 years in Louisville. He's really concerned for me. Question on the dinner the Friday before the race--racers eat free and spouses have to pay? Do we have to sign up? If so, when? Nathan |

Not just for this day in August, but OF ALL TIME IN HISTORY. Oh and my A/C died yesterday! Lucky me |

I did have a cheeseburger and fries the night before a run late last week. I paid for it during the run. I am beginning to clean up my diet this month before the race. |

Expert 868 CALEDONIA/MIDDLEVILLE, MICHIGAN | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread NahinAK- I believe that is correct. You don't pay...any guests do. Check the 2010 Athlete Guide on their website...or wait for the 2011 version, but it will likely be nearly identical. As far as the temps. Yes, records in MI as well. Fifth hotest? Well, maybe this has been the big push and it is going to calm down after a couple weeks and we'll experience a lull in the heat action. Lisa- Ouch! Sorry about the A.C. maybe an all day trip to the library is in order. Food Question- Yeah...that's a weak area for me. I'll just leave it at that. |

I alert the officials who send me to a tent to get a new one. There I am met by the same type of bull-headed, stubborn, bureaucratic, passive aggressiveness I usually expect from Vogons or at the DMV. I am shuffled from one line to the next, while I try to explain I'm a last hour finisher and I can't wait around while all the paper work is completed, but there's no talking sense into anyone. Sheesh! I need a little taper, I think. Soon. |

1 | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Hi I am new to this site, and Louisville will be my first IM. I have a question, the training program I have been following, has me tapering on the long run already. So far my longest run has been a little over 15 miles (which took me 3 hours in 98 degree mid day heat, sore from the long ride the day before). The day i set out to do 18, I was making great time, feeling awesome, but unfortunately had to stop after 11 miles due to a torrential downpour with dangerous lightning (i really wanted to keep going, but it wasn't safe!). Normally, running is a strength for me, and I do 9:30-10:00 pace on long runs. However, with being constantly sore from training and this ridiculous heat and humidity in Virginia, I've been running slower. Is it worth getting 18 miles in this Sunday, three weeks out from the race, or should I continue to taper and let 15 be my longest run? I should say this past weekend I did a 110/6 brick, so I am now starting my bike taper, and will probably only do 90/5 this weekend. My goal is simply to finish, and if I can do it in 15:30 or less, I will be satisfied. thoughts from experienced triathletes? Thanks! |

We're not bringing our kids either (ages 11, 7, and 2). Don't want to pull them out of school for something they will be bored at. My oldest may enjoy it for awhile, but might self-destruct waiting 17 hours for me to finish. |

Veteran 329 | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Kris--welcome. I am by no means an experienced triathlete, but I can tell you that I research topics on this site and other sites religiously. The overall consensus is to pick a plan and trust it. With that said, The Don Fink Be IronFit plan that I am following doesn't start to taper until next Tuesday. In fact, this coming weekend is the longest weekend of the plan. If I were in your position and I could honestly say that my number one goal is to "just finish", then I would follow my plan for the next several weeks with little or no deviation. No sense risking an injury. You've proven to yourself that you can finish the bike distance and run 6 miles after that. You can walk the last 20 with Tri Sam....or me...or a few hundred of your new buddies. Disclaimer: If you read through these pages you will see that Tri Sam is going to attempt to walk the marathon. I am just picking on him. He is a far superior athlete than I; and if it weren't for a bum achilles, he would be going sub-11.

Expert 868 CALEDONIA/MIDDLEVILLE, MICHIGAN | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Jillian- We are bringing the whole crew (ages 12, 10, 8, and 3). I will not be taking them to the dinner, and I did not bring the youngest two in 2009. If it makes you feel less stressed leaving them at home...do it, and don't feel badly about it. It might be harder for your support crew on sight if you have them there while you are are on the course. Kris- Yes to what Nash is saying. People all have different things that work for them. For my first two I.M.'s I didn't run longer than 15 miles. It is neither unheard of or uncommon. Having said that, some may say, you need to go farther. I generally error on the less is more principle, particularly at this stage in the game. However, it's your party. Nash- I thought that was funny...and true...and appropriate...and I appreciate the sub-11 ego boost. I'll pretend that would be true and like it. |

If they REALLY want to come, however, and understand that it's really a lot of waiting around, in this case, in the heat, and are still determined to support you, then by all means bring them along but try to make it an event for them as well : ) As usual, just my .02 Tailwinds, all |

Regular 173 MD | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Kris- As another data point, I've run a faster IM with a shorter max run during training.. for my last race, 15 mi (2-hr) was my longest training run, and I was able to complete the run portion without walking. For the previous race, I had a max training run of 20 mi (2:45) and walked a good portion of the 2nd half of the marathon. If I were you, I'd feel pretty good about having a 3-hr run under tough conditions in the bank.. and if you're hurting, I'd be more concerned about injury than building a small amount of incremental fitness.. just my experience, but others may obviously differ.. |

Expert 1128 Fort Riley, Kansas | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread I don't want to bring them, they are bored to tears at races, and the older one starts school on Thursday and can't miss too much. Also, my 2-year old is typical, always throwing tantrums about something. We didn't bring them to Muncie HIM and that was a good choice, they would have hated it. |

Expert 1143 Wellington, Florida | Subject: RE: Ironman Louisville : Official Thread Just off the phone with coach. This is the last BIG week. Have another 20mi run on sat afternoon, in the HEAT @ 3PM (IMLOU aprox run start time), then a 4.5hr bike on Sunday. Asking for another 100+ bike (plz plz) just for the head. He said next week, things will be more half IM training then taper on the 15th so looks like two 20mi runs and a 115/5 day will be the bulk of it. |

I just finished Physical Therapy with mine (also including IT Band). Do some good stretching (including the hamstrings) and be easy on the running. I've already figured how much running and walking I need to do to finish within 17 hours. |
