JoePetto - 2013-03-12 9:19 PM So this is probably a heretical statement, but I started using my wife's SwimP3 and it had doing wonders for keeping me engaged while swimming.  The drudgery of pool swimming kills me and I have found that the din of the SwimP3 gives me just enough extra motivation/distraction not to throw in the towel.  The product tends be unreliable in that we've replaced no less than 5 units over the last 3-4 years, but Finis has stood by the product and replaced it free of charge.  Unlike other products, the sound is conducted through the bone in your skull and not your eardrums. The latest generation device seems like it might be sturdier.

I got an Audioflood Ipod for chirstmas and have loved it.  I haven't had a single issue other than the people who constantly stop my workout to ask me if it really works.  I love the pool.  Im going to have to start my sets from the other end I think.

Had my first 12 miler outside this morning since my injury last November and was finished by 6:40 am.  Cold, wet and in the dark made for less than ideal conditions but this was the first run in a long time that I nailed.  Ran 8:05 pace at MAF+4 - faster than necessary but felt good.  Really thought that I'd be still feeling the effects of the injury and prolonged rest at this point, but I think all of the MAF training and swimming in interim helped to build a stronger engine.

I may need to readjust my expectations for 2013 - hmmmmm?

Joe, you're right, aerobic condition is the last thing to be lost whe there's extended rest periods. It is really good to know that all that work paid off and that you are a "believer", make sure though, that the mileage ramps up at a rate than no more than 10% per week, and cross training is very important. Stay flexible too, some dynamic warmup is necessary.

So just a short 3 hour 29 minute workout on the drainer this morning before work since I had to readjust my workouts for the week as I am out of town this weekend.

How is everyone's training coming along? I've missed a few workouts this week just due to being overly tired. I am glad that I didn't do those because of my workout this morning as I felt energized. I guess that is a good sign that I listened to my body about missing a few workouts this week.

6 mile runch for 50:07 today.

I had a tri nerd moment. My running shoes have almost 500 miles on them, so a bought a new pair before they start hurting. They arrived at my office via UPS. My secretary asked didn't you just get new shoes. I told her about 6 months ago, but . She responded saying "where do you get shoes with odometers on them".

I then take them home and I get the same question. Again I said I have almost 500 miles on them and I wanted a new pair before they start hurting. My wife with a puzzled look says who keeps track of how many miles they have on their shoes. Then my teen aged daughters chime in, looking disgusted, you know how many miles you have on your shoes, followed by please don't ever say that in public.

Feeling the grind of my second week of base training. Will log 12+ hours of training this week with the vast majority of hours logged before 7 am. I'm getting up at 4 am these days and come Friday I am shot. So looking forward to 2.5 hrs on the drainer tomorrow in the late morning.

I few interesting thoughts on running from the current world champ Pete Jacobs. Think he may need to look at few other options as he is injured following Escape from Alcatraz.

Hey gang! I'm here in lovely Puerto Rico, tomorrow I toe the line for the first time in a triathlon this season. Wish me luck! If anybody wishes to track, my bib is 889 and expect:

- An average or below average swim, around 35 minutes. Not a whole lot of training under the belt.

- A VERY long T1, the distance between the swim exit ramp and the bike is ridiculous (they should count it towards the run, hehe).

- A very fast first split on the bike since there will be a tailwind, a slower 2nd split and a much slower 3rd split since I will be going into the wind.

- A normal T2 and...

- A run in survival mode, since it is hot in here, and hilly and I don't have a whole lot of miles under the belt.

Regardless, I expect to have lots of fun! Inner child starts the cool season.

Love, E.

Ernesto,

Have a great fun time tomorrow.  I'm working South by Southwest 7PM - 4 AM tonight at a Philly steak sandwich food trailer.  I'll be wearing the 70.3 Puerto Rico hat that you gave me the day of my very first tri for good vibes for you.

May the luck of the Irish be with you!

Joe, it really is the REAL thing.  The owner is a friend of mine.  He is from Philly.  He gets the Amoroso rolls and they have whiz and tater tots.  They are the best I've found anywhere, except Philly of course!

When you come to Austin to visit, I'll treat you to one and you can see for yourself.

Hey everyone - hope you're having a fun filled weekend!?

I had a couple of runs this week with my new 4mm Brooks and as you all said my lower legs ache as expected. So will continue to take it easy and ramp the mileage gradually.

I also noticed that I have to run a bit faster to get my HR up to and stay at MAF so that too seems to be working nicely!

Looking forward to starting my official training plan next week as I count down six weeks to the first sprint of the season.

Goodluck Ernesto and everyone else racing or training.

Mark.

- Trevor, kuddos to you for enduring 3:30 (58 Mi.) on the drainer, I've never been on it that long

- E, best of luck tomorrow, you are going to do great and I will be tracking you with a cooler with cold beers by my side Wink

- Jordan, congrats on your new bike, very exciting.  We now want to see some pics!

- Jackie, I'm now craving Philly cheese steaks down here.

- I'm running Guatemala City's 10k night race in a few hours, but there are going to be so many people that it will be more of a fun run than a fast run.

Have a great weekend everyone

Big props on the Amoroso rolls. The bike club I used to ride with was sponsored by them and I have the full team Amoroso kit. Whiz wit!
