dharris13 - 2010-03-27 7:20 AM Who is riding long and how long this weekend??

It was pretty nice weather over here in San Francisco over the weekend.  I did a 90+ mile ride yesterday which included 2 ascents up Mt. Tam (have to work on those hills!).   It was great day to be out.

Ok...now that I'm caught up on the musing, I have some good news.

I finally found my fire!  Sometime around Wednesday last week, I finally felt like training and wanted to get out there.  I have just kinda been going through the motions lately.  Well, this weekend was EPIC!!!

I picked up my new bike (Blue Triad) on Friday and went for a 3 hr steady ride.  Even with a more aggressive position (13 cm drop from saddle to arm rests) I had ZERO trap pain.  This was also my first ride over 2 hrs this year and that was on my road bike.  I was just chatting along and got in just over 65 miles in 3 hrs at a 78% of my FTP.  Got off the bike and felt as if I had done nothing.

I am finally over this sinus infection thing, the weather is beautiful here in Atlanta and it's time to crush some dreams.

Oh, nutrition-wise, I am an all liquid kinda guy.  I can't stand fig newtons btw.  I had 2 bottles of Infinit (300 Kcal each).  Normally I put down a bottle an hour when I race.  That's my nutrition plan.  1 bottle/hr on the bike, and 8 - 8 oz bottles on the run.  I carry a fuel belt with 4 bottles and change them out at Special needs.

Just wanted to share.

cornerofdivision - 2010-03-28 10:56 PM I just signed up to volunteer for IMLP 2010. I did it so I would be able to compete in 2011. Anyway, I just started to look for lodging and have found nothing. Having never been to this region I didn't realize how remote it was. Does anyone have advice of where lodging is still available this close to the race? I don't need that nice of a place and it doesn't have to be very close because I am not racing. I'd appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.
check the Keene Wilimington area. There is also a campsite right on the race course I can't think of the name. Any lodging in L.P. will be sold out and most require a 5-7 day minimum.

If you don't mind a 5 night minimum, get on the waiting list at sevearl hotels in LP.  I got a spot at Art Devlin's last April/May ish.

Another option, check with JoshKaptur, I believe he mentioned he's got a big house and may be looking to rent out rooms.
Agreed. Stuff opens up late. Last year I got a very nice place in late June. I'm actually staying at the same place this year.

It can be expensive to go to volunteer and sign up with 5 night minimum and many hotels raise prices 2-3x for IM week.

When we went up first time to watch and sign up we stayed about 60 miles if not further away near the US Canada border as it was the only place we could find that was not to expensive and only booked 2 nights.

I think out Sarnac Lake way hotels have less minimum night stay and can be cheaper.

If you go the Lake Placid visitors website they have information about lodging.

I'm planning to sign up but have decided it will be easier and less expensive to do RI 70.3 and sign up there.

I volunteered last year and because of family/time constraints, just went for the day/night. I did my volunteer shift, which ended at midnight, then went and camped out in the volunteer line (bring a pad and a sleeping bag--tent would be nice in case it rains, I didn't have one and fortunately it did not rain). I was about 10th in line to sign up.

No lodging fee, no 5-night minimum, well-lighted place to sleep in with hundreds of other people doing the same (safe), no problem! There are also plenty of places where you could probably sleep in your car without much hassle. Don't waste money on lodging if you don't have to, it is a serious ripoff during Ironman week. Save your money for when you are actually doing the Ironman.

I volunteered last year and stayed at Whispering Pines campground, about a 20 minute drive outside of Lake Placid on Cascade Road.

TONS of people who were both volunteering and, believe it or not, racing, stayed there, so I really felt like I was part of the scene, as it were.

It was such a blast. Hung out with Sara (WittyCity) and some other volunteers around a campfire at night, shared some wine and food. It was a really great time. I think it was $25 for the campsite. They have coin operated hot showers, convenience store and picnic tables on site.

Thanks for volunteering--it's so much fun and such a great insight into the actual race.

Coin operated hot showers?  What does that mean?  You put in coins and it gives you hot water for X amt of time like the car wash?  I'd pay a lot more than coins for a shower!!

Swishyskirt (Mirjam) and I were tough cookies last year and *gasp* camped at Whispering Pines.  Like 6 miles from the start (I think). $25/night.  Showers kind of stunk, but really, we were only there for a day and a half.  I'm staying at the community college dorms.  I think for 3 or 4 days it was only $400.

Heh. I'm used to backpacking, where there aren't so much coin operated hot showers as icy cold mountain streams. So I sorta felt like I was being pampered. I think they required quarters, and yes, it was exactly as you say: you put in a quarter, turned the knob and you got 10 minutes or something. The water was hot and it was fine.

10 mins for a quarter!  Dang, I'd pay $20 easily!  That's awesome!  I'm might have to try camping.
