Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() carrie639 - 2011-07-05 1:44 PM So just finished Dean ???, Ultramarathon Man's 50/50 book yesterday. Totally amazing that he keeps his HR at a 110 average in a marathon - WOW. That's walking for me!!! It was a great book and I found alot of great advice. Totally recommend. Question: I keep reading about salt and sodium. Same thing right - I guess not totally. Well Dean's book says to eat sodium/salt the day before a race, but everything else I have read says to stay away from sodium/salt? Question: Also, you hear constantly to keep hydrated before races. I guess I get confused because you drink so much water the day or two or three before a race or long run and all you are doing is peeing it out. Are you drinking so much to cleanse the body as much as possible (any hydrate) so the muscles perform at their best without any crap in them? With regard to salt and sodium. Most people get way too much sodium (not as a result of putting salt on foods) but rather as a result of the fact that processed foods contains tons of sodium. That being said, endurance athletes loose a ton of salt while training -- think about how salty sweat tastes. Failure to replace that salt is a major cause of cramping. During an Ironman, I loose about 40 oz of fluid per hour. This fluid includes both water and electrolytes (such as sodium). During an Ironman I try to take in about 900 mg of sodium per hour in the form of PowerGels (I actually stoppedusing GUs because they don't contain electrolytes), Ironman Perform and Thermotabs (an electrolyte tablet -- think similar to Endurolytes). So while too much sodium can be a problem in a sedentary person's diets, when your trianing and racing longer distances you need to make sure you're taking in enough sodium. With regard to water, as an initial matter the better you hydrate everyday, the better you'll be able to hydrate before a race. If you don't hydrate well on a daily basis, doing a water load pre-race will just cause you to pee a lot. I find that when hydrating pre-race, the best way to take in fluids is to add electrolytes to them (think the water in your body is full of electrolytes so if you drink only plain water you dillute those electrolyte levels -- hooray for osmosis). Personally, I use Nuun tablets in water for pre-race hydrations. The purpose of this pre-race hydration is to have as full of a "tank" as possible prior to the race. Pretty much no matter what you do you're going to loose more fluid than you can consume during a race (especially during a running race) so you want to make sure that you're as hydrated as possible when you toe the starting line. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() OK, very helpful. Couple of follow-ups then: Question: So if the sweat on my face has become more of a salt layer than just a sweaty layer, does than mean I am dehydrated at that point? It doesn't happen all the time, actually pretty rarely, but the occasions it does, it seems I may not have drank enough? Good to know on the sodium and liquids per hour. I have probably been taking in maybe 10-14 oz per hour (2 regular fuel belt bottles), way too low, I have been told. I pee alot anyway, but if I pump up my water intake on Fridays, I just pee more. I bought some nuuns last week, but really didn't like them. Tasted like the flavored Dansi waters. Should I maybe bring a bottle of gatorade endurance to work on Friday? Will that help for a long Saturday run - got 18 this Saturday? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I must be totally out of it, because I don't understand what about this trial has gotten it so much publicity? I mean, horrible stuff like this happens all the time, unfortunately, but you never hear about most of it, and certainly not to this degree. Did I miss something??? What about this trial, this child makes it more important than any other story just like it? |

If cars, TV and internet disappeared tomorrow, the world would be a much much better place. And i would get more work done, lol!!!

Got a long run in yesterday, felt lousy, bike intervals/t run today and hopefully some swimming in a bit. Off to the slip and slide with the kids! I'll try and catch up with the posts later. |

Will that help for a long Saturday run - got 18 this Saturday? Nope. That just means that the water in your sweat is being absorbed off your skin (you're sweat mechanism is working to cool you) and leaving behind the salt. Generally if its humid out the water in your sweat wont be absorbed well and you'll have the sweaty layer. If its less humid out the water will absorb and you'll be left with the salty layer. Gatorade endurance works with regard to electrolytes, only problem is it has lots of sugar you don't really need when you're not training (although if you're doing it the day before a long run, it will help to make sure your glycogen levels are topped off). What Nuun flavor did you try? |

Anyway she'll prob. end up in jail for something else anyway or dead. They did go for multiple charges (there was a manslaughter charge in there that doesn't carry the death penalty). I think the problem is that the case was based entirely on circumstantial evidence and its really hard to get to "beyond a reasonable doubt" solely on circumstantial evidence. The prosecution probably could have played its cards better, but from what I can tell the case became an utter and complete circus. I think the real tragedy is the amount of time and money the press focused on this case when there are thousands of abused and neglected children in the system. Instead of making this about all the abused little kids (who could benefit from some publicity), it became about crazy young mother in FL. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Kelly - I ran this morning in Lululemon shorts (Run: The Fastest Shorts) and LOVED them! They are very cute too! Might need another color combo! The other style I got were the Turbo Shorts. I know I'll like them, but I really liked the ones I wore today. So I did my run which had intervals. I have not done intervals in a few weeks, and I can tell. It was tough! I was supposed to do 3 X 6 Z4 w/ 2 min. recovery. I thought it was 6 X 4 Z4 w/ 2 min. recovery, so that's what I did. Oops. It was very easy to get to and stay in Z4 today. It was a good workout! |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() So this is pretty funny -- I'm reading an article on Terrenzo Bozzone on ironman.com. Its a pretty good article discussing his achilles injury, but I thought it was hilarious that ironman.com wouldn't refer to Rev 3 by name. They make the statement: "He had one warm-up race last month in Connecticut before placing 10th at Eagleman, with the Achilles flaring up again which forced him out of Ironman 70.3 Buffalo Springs." They use the phrase "race . . .in Connecticut" rather than saying "Rev 3 Quassy." Pretty amusing to me.
