19 straight hours at work yesterday with back to back giant emergency cases has totally derailed this weeks training. I've got to get it in gear from here on in

Ouch, Jason, that's rough.  Get some rest -- far more important than training.

I've started really coming back to running, so my legs are fried right now.  And then (does this make me officially stupid?) tonight I agreed to race a 5K tomorrow morning.  The good part is that my kids will do it to -- I love it when they participate.

At the hopsital on call, ER busy and I took a chance on the hospital treadmill.  Only one page and ended up getting 11.4 miles!  Always love when I can get training done while on the job!  It's like winnning the lottery on a small scale.

Jimmy- Way to get those miles in! I don't know how you keep the schedule that you have and train. Michael- have a great time at the 5k with your kids. I woke up at my normal time today. There is a long bike & run on the schedule for today. No reason to get started early this morning. Going back to bed for a while.

It's a tradition for me to get sick or injured a week before a big race. I've got a nice knee issue going on. Got kicked in the knee during a soccer game. Did you know that fluids in the injured area can migrate? What was on top of the knee is know behind the knee cap.  I've got some KTTAPE on it, which I hope will help, but I'm forced to rest for taper week after a hard soccer game tomorrow. Hard to say no to your 1st sport even when you know it's only going to hurt you.

So, my dear better half returns next week. Tri training will be back on. Yay!

Blanda -- get well!

Went in to the 5K today with very tired legs, but managed 2nd OA, so I'll take it (and take it easy the rest of today).  Have a great Saturday everyone -- I hope you're having the same wonderful weather that we've got here.

Jimmy--way to go. You were a pro triathlete for awhile-getting paid to work out, one of my favorite things.

Blanda-sorry to hear about your knee. I would think that it sounds more like a bruise than anything else. Painful, but probably not structural. We have to look for the positives in something like that

In other news; I had a really nice swim with a local masters group this morning. I feel like I am right on the edge of making some real swimming improvements. I just "feel" like faster swimming is right there if I work at it a little bit. I swear that this winter I will give the volume approach to swimming improvement a real try. I am joining a new pool that opens a half hour earlier in the morning. That should give me an hour a day of swimming. Not anything like the volume a high school swimmer does, but considerably more than I am doing now.

Blanca, sorry to hear about your knee. At least your hubby will be home soon. I know y'all are looking forward to seeing him.

Michael, congrats on the hardware and 2nd OA. That is outstanding.

Jason, that is great news about finding a different pool and your progress with masters today.

Well I knocked out 112 on the trainer this morning and followed it up with a 5 mile run at IM pace. There was only a low point about 3 hours in. Last week it happened at 2:30 in. Made some nutritional adjustments (honey stinger waffle addition) and came out of the dark place. Done for today. Time to eat!!!

Looks like everyone has been busy this morning. Had a solid race  this morning although I never got into a great groove where I felt like I was really racing well.  Good news was that I won Grandmasters (50+) and was 15 of 880 overall. Will put together a race report later. Interesting trophy for 1st overall, masters and grandmasters.  Going to try and attach a picture. Its a hand carved, two foot tall Tiki. Definitely unusual.

Randy, Congrats! 50 is now Grandmasters? Hmmmm... I feel like I'm finally coming into my athletic potential at 49 and racing 50 next year.

Very awesome trophy. You need to take that to work.

Jim: Nice TM run! Not nearly as long, but it's like the day I took the kids to the family room at the gym and only expected to get 3 miles before they lost it. They played nicely for 6 miles! I praised them up and down for that.

Thanks for the kind words. Things aren't feeling so stiff and sensitive today, so hopefully I don't tweak it during the game and get the swelling going again.

Congratulations on your awesome race, Randy! Impressive, as usual. You all give me so much hope for improving my performance.

Rene- Nice work on the trainer! Turning 50 has its benefits when it come to racing triathlon....although there are some fast older racers out there. I've got a friend here locally that is one year older than I am and I'm not sure I will ever get close to catching him in a race.

All my trophies/awards go to my office......my wife says we have enough crap that we don't need around the house. I did point out that the finish on the Tiki was almost identical to the finish on the dining room table and that it would make a great center piece.

Showing my age but everytime I look at the Tiki I think of the old Brady Bunch episode where they went to Hawaii. Greg and Peter bought "cursed" Tiki necklaces and as you would expect bad things happened. Hope my Tiki is happy...hard to tell from the expression.

Blanda-careful on that knee. I have periodic stiffness in my right knee from 2 surgeries 18-20 years ago. If you have time and a place to do an easy spin on the bike that may help with your range of motion before heading out on the pitch. Good luck!

Michael-great job on the 5k....sounds like the running machine is getting tuned up! You going to hit any 100 mile weeks over the Winter?

Hi All - congrats Michael and Randy (cool Tiki - and I remember that Brady Bunch episode -- and not from reruns!)

Blanda, sorry to hear about the knee... though it probably goes against your personality... rest and ice!

Well, didn't turn out to be a good day for me, except that it is always good to race on a nice weather day.  But my performance left much to be desired.  Not much better than the OLY I did Aug 4th with little prep.  And that is discouraging.  I really had hoped this would be a breakthrough OLY for me.  But just didn't have it today, especially on the run.  May be due to fighting some virus or something.  Hard to say right now.  Will digest for a few days, and then I'll be ready to start thinking about off-season strategies to improve this.  And also start aiming for the half mary.

Stu- nice race results. Especially considering it sounds like you're getting sick. All of those breathing issues had to have a major impact on your race.
Hope you feel better and it doesn't turn into something else.

Stu-still a solid result. I'll put my money on you coming down with something. When we are training we typically know what the typical aches and pains are associated with fatigue or hard efforts. In your race report you identified several issues that you felt were unusual. Hope you are not getting sick but that would be my guess. Hope you can have a good Fall and get a HM PR!

Randy -- you win the coolest trophy award! I got a pink ribbon... (not complaining, as it was all about the charity)

Stu -- I hope you recover well. It sounds like you were off game, which can happen for lots of reasons. You will come back from it!

Up at 5:15 this morning to get my nine year old daughter to her first "real" swim meet, 90 minutes from home. I am sitting in the stands watching them warm up and wishing my stroke looked half as pretty as my daughters.

It feels like "winter" in Texas today. I have a long run and don't want to go out because it is cold and damp. Temperature of 54 with 14 mph wind and up to 21 mph gusts. Glad I don't live in a cold climate year round! Guess it is a matter of what you're used to! I'd much rather run when it was 100 out than this.

Jason: Good luck to your baby girl! You must be a wreck with pride, love, and worry.

Rene: Zowie! 54? I would be hurting.

Survived the soccer without injury. I played very, very carefully. Mostly a sweeper position and avoided contact for the most part. Light runs thru the week till the half. I just want a new PB, that's all.  Seriously, I've run this race 3 times already and have only gotten worse each time!

Hope your Sundays are fabulous. Good luck with your Tri/Athletic goals of the day!

Good morning all-a little cooler here as well. I've got to clean up my race gear and swap out wheels this morning. Probably a light spin on the bike later to work out some stiffness.

Jason-sounds like a triathlete in the making. Wish I would have learned to really swim as a child....way too hard to become a decent swimmer as an adult.

Blanda-glad the knee made it through the game. Keep it easy this week.

Cooler here too, but I like it. It can be tough to get going in the cold, but I find that a mile or so in I usually enjoy it a lot.

Just got back from a 18 mile bike ride ... temps 48 degrees feeling like 44 with winds gusting up to 20 mph. Dallas sure is cold today ... another 9 mile run this afternoon.

Like everyone else, cool here this morning, but it was nice, as I did a 13.1 mile training run for a HM I have on the 27th. Felt good...
