Always exciting when the bib numbers come up!  By the time it got there I was training so long I was just finally relieved it was close...
------------------------------------------------
Glad you stuck it out and did the race Kathleen, I've had that same problem with my goggles before and it cost me a ton of time as well.
------------------------------------------------
Sick for 2 days in a row, its frustrating because I'm not on my deathbed, just sick enough not to train; or I could train and risk it getting worse.  Mild sore throat, runny nose, head congestion...

I've been getting sick alot this past year, not sure if its age, poor nutrition, or what.  I know a few were after hard training efforts (I got sick 2 times after centuries last year) but most are just catching a bug (like today).

Woot woot for our IMLP people. What a big accomplishment just to make it to the race and an amazing accomplishment when you finish.

I did my hour bike ride tonight at dusk and it was beautiful. I can't believe I said that because it was 110 when I started it but it just felt great. I bought lights for my bike and they worked great. I actually felt very safe with them on and didn't worry about traffic at all. I kind of liked it that I could see the car lights better than seeing them during the day. I had good water intake and even though my speed has been steady at about 15-16 mph, I'm happy with that. Just very peaceful hearing the whurrrr of my tires on the road.

IM Racine 70.3, this Sunday.  Bib #231.

Looks like it is going to be a hot one.  Forcast is for upper 80's with high humidity.  If it is anything like today it will be hot, current heat index is 105 with humidity.  It will be interesting to see the toll the heat takes on this race.  The majority of the participants are from the Midwest and don't normally race in temps this high.  I have been trying to get some heat acclimation by running/riding during the hotter parts of the day on the weekends.   Looks like I will be paying strict attention to hydration intake and electrolytes.

One positive is that the water temp in Lake Michigan is around high 50's to mid 60's.  This will really cool the core prior to heading out on the bike.  I also lucked out and was put in wave #4 starting at 7:14.  There are 19 waves with the last going out at 8:20.  Another cool thing is I will get to see Craig Alexander leave just prior to my wave as the pros start at 7:00.  It will be the only time I see him the whole day, except we might pass each other going the opposite direction on the bike, me heading out, him coming back.

I will let you know how it goes.

Just make sure you give your body what it needs to work for you. Plenty of fluids and nutrition. Here in Phoenix it's so dry that you have to almost chug the water down constantly on the bike. You kind of get sick of drinking.

You should do great and I can't wait to hear how a 70.3 went.

Speaking of hydration and nutrition.  After this past weekend and the fact that IM's will no longer be serving Gatorade Endurance I felt it was time to investigate other options.  I just ordered some Infinit made from a formula by answering the questions for a custom formula.

Does anyone else train with Infinit?  I have heard nothing but good things about the company. (I apologize if we have discussed this earlier,  but I don't recall doing so!)

I will also try the Powerbar stuff to see if living off the course is an option.

Ken,  I got some of the free powerbar drink sent to me.  I have used it on my long training rides the last month.  It has worked very well for me.  To me it tastes a little less heavy than Gatorade which makes it easier to drink in my opinion.  I really like it and it works out well for my HIM and IM this year as far as not having to carry a grocery store on the bike.

I almost died out there in 107 heat today.  It was our first real hot day so I'm not acclimated to it yet.  I also have to force down fluids, which isn't fun because the water tastes like bad coffee in this heat...

Of course if I had was an Emmy award winner this wouldn't have bothered me at all

I think the humidity today is about 15-20%.

Ummmm.... I didn't know that humidity was EVER that low!  I thought it was "normal" to have it in the 80+%?!

So, in need of some advice...

How's your body supposed to feel as one gets closer to their first IM?  I've been training for 6 months and up until today I have felt drained much of the time.  I'm thinking that feeling "spunky" is a good thing because I would honestly dread feeling craptastic until just a few days before the race. Still...

It's taken skipping workouts, sleeping a lot extra, cutting out caffeine, being diligent with nutrition, and stretching when I remember to start feeling *this* good.

I can't understand if I'm setting myself up for a "bad" race because I've really cut down my taper, but I'm starting to feel like it's worth it.  Basically, at this point I cut out 2 3-hour rides and I'm actually going to do one of them this weekend instead of a recovery day.  It won't be anything crazy. I'm actually biking out to a swim meet, spectating, and heading home so it's more like 2 x 1.5 hour rides.

I think I'm tired of being tired and looking for someone to say "resting 1-2 weeks from the race IS okay".  I'm not completely sedentary, but I'm definitely not putting in hours of training.

Usually 1-2 days of training in it.  Last year some of my fastest times were in 100+ heat;  the air is lighter and it does feel like you can go faster.  Although yestderday my biggest problem was the sweat was evaporating off my body and I was not cooling off.  My arms and head were dry after my ride.

You'll be fine on race day!

At this point you are not going to build any more muscle that will help you for the race, so you just really want to maintain your cardiovascular fitness.  How much you have to do I don't know.  Past that I'll defer my expertise to Fred and some of the others that have a bit more experience in tapering.

The humidity here is usually below 10% but it can get as high as 40-50% now when we're in monsoon season. 108 degrees and 40% humidity is crazy. Been a while since I've lived in the midwest and can't handle cold or high humidity anymore.

We're pretty low humidity here as well, but we don't get quite as hot as AZ.  We have higher humidity in the middle of the night and then low again during the day.  It's midnight here, 72 degrees with 53% humidity.  Tomorrow will be mid 90s, but humidity during the day will likely be 10% or below.  I don't know how anyone could 108degrees and 40% humidity or more.  If that was the norm, I'd have to build myself a room just large enough for a treadmill and the bike on a trainer, hook some A/C up to it, set it to 50degrees and never come out.

Melting....

How do you all stay cool when running in this heat?  Or is it just a matter of minimizing the damage that the heat can do?  If history repeats itself I am going to be in one of the later waves for the 70.3 race and that along with what it going to be a run/walk for the run is going to have me on the course for a  very long time. There is not a bit of shade on the run course and I sweat a lot.  I have started using Nuun tablets for the electolytes but I don't know if I can drink that throughout the whole event or if that is even enough. I really think that switching from water to Nuun on the run is the way to go along with adding Gu Chomps or some other thing that has electrolytes in them. I can do Gu's also but not sure that will help with the dehydration piece.  I used iced at the last race and plan to do that again.
What was supposed to be a five mile run yesterday turned out to be a one mile run and a four mile walk with spurts of running  as the heat beat me down. This of course has me concerned as if I felt that bad after only five miles, I can't even imagine what the 70.3 will be like.  I have a much longer run planned for tomorrow. I will go out early as it is supposed to hit 100 tomorrow but I feel I need to train in the heat as well as that will be my reality on race day.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Obviously after last Sunday I don't know the answer, so I'll be interested to hear what the others have to say!  I know one thing I didn't do that would probably help is to actually get out and train in it.

It won't be as hot in October when I do my 1/2 IM but I want to get use to riding and running in it. I haven't really been running in the heat much but I'm riding in it about 3 days a week. As long as I'm moving above 10 mph it isn't that hot but on slow climbs the sweat starts to pour down my head.

It has also been good for me to learn how to manage my water and nutrition intake during my rides. It's a work in progress. My avg speed on the bike right now is just over 15 mph on a ride that has some rollers and one big climb. I would like to get that up in the 16's or 17's by Oct. We'll see how that goes.

I think I'm going to start to do some 2000 yd swim / 56 mile bike ride bricks to get accustomed to the distances and the in about a month I'll start to do some serious bike / run bricks. I liked the 15 mile bike/30 min run/15 mile bike/20 min run/15 mile bike/10 min run thing.

Just a side note, it's suppose to be 115 here today and we have an excessive heat warning. Oh yeah.
