Kelly, what fundraising method are you using to generate that much of a profit? Is it all registration fees and some small sponsors? That's impressive.

I am moving along nicely with being an RD for my first 5k (actually 3.5 miler) for the non profit I am involved with.  Thanks to Kelly for some help with getting that started by sharing her budget for her race.  I am looking at Sept 16th. And have finally secured a nice course around Alexanders Lake. We actually decided to make it a 3.5 mile run as we really wanted to use this course that no one else has ever used. So yes, we'll be advertising it as such. And thanks to Bryan, he hooked me up big time!!

Jeff - what's your non profit?

Kelly - that is an awesome amount raised!!!  Hopefully it will kick up more this week before the race.

I know I whine about hard workouts, but I have to admit there is such an awesome feeling of power after I am done.  Hills went awesome.  No rain, about 55 degrees, but 25-35 mph winds ... they don't call it the windy city for nothing!!!  I am just constantly amazed that my runs seems to feel easier and easier at faster paces.  I guess hard work does pay off!

Scott - be careful in the aeros initially ... I would ride outside alone before riding with a group.  While aeros are fun and faster, there is a balance you have to grasp (obviously).  And don't ride with a death grip.  I also freak out a bit when my elbows pop out of the bars if I hit a bump, but I guess I am properly positioned and have a good grip to just hand in there (still has me going, OMG, OMG, OMG).

No sponsors ever.

We have a pretty large profit margin because I do everything myself.  I avoid outside costs as much as possible.

Scott - NICE ride!!!! Love the colors!

Jen - I'm glad you asked about aero - I just started riding in aero also and it is definitely a different neck position to get used to. Seems like you also use more of your upper quads - at least for me! Hope you adjust to the new meds soon and feel better! Congrats on your house being on the market - now the stress of keeping it 'show ready' starts - nearly impossible with 4 mess makers (if they are anything like mine!!LOL)

Being in a true aero positoin (verus putting bars on a road bike) actually helps you use more quads on your bike, thus saving your running muscles for the run (the functional strength for the run comes from the Hiup flexors, hip extendors, ankle and knee rather than the quad).

I know you know this, but NEVER RIDE IN THE AEROBARS ON A GROUP RIDE.

LOL.  I know that Kelly.  I'm not up for the nasty looks I'd get from the roadies anyway.

Just reminding.  I've seen too many crashes caused by triathletes in the aero bars in a bunch.

When I'm in a bunch, I prefer to go no handed and practice my Mark Cavendish victory salutes.

It's why I'm keeping my road bike.  Charity rides, group rides, loan out to friends coming in to town, etc.

I actually can't ride no handed anymore. I have ridden with groups on my tri bike, but am just not anywhere near anyone, and certainly not drafting! Just remember your brakes aren't as close anymore! You will find that you can easily run with your tri bike which is nice. It steers real easily while running for transition!

Legs felt totally dead on the bike this morning.  I had a difficult time controlling my HR too.  I was on my feet from 4:15 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. yesterday, so I'm blaming it on that.  You can't win them all; right?!  On a positive note, I get to go on a short run tonight.  Hope everything holds up ok.

Does anyone know how to set HR alerts on a Garmin?  Will it beep if it goes over a certain number?

jsklarz - 2012-03-26 7:54 PM hey all... back from conference in las vegas.  always an interesting time.  have kelly's race saturday.  should be interesting, definitely not ready for it, but we shall see.

This week is ridiculously over extended for me.  Trial all week, training as normal and then the 1/4 Marathon on Saturday.  We're looking at hitting $20,000 in funds raised for the Blazeman Foundation this year.

Kelly - that is awesome!!! Can I ask, do you have a personal connection to the Blazeman Foundation?

x2!  Great job raising money this year, Kelly!

I GOT OUT OF JAIL LAST NIGHT!!!

I have been trainig since dec all on HR and the numbers have been very good. So I have a 10K coming up on April 7th and have done no speed work and only started doing some pick-ups 3 weeks ago.

But yesterday I have what was supposed to be a 1:00 Z2 run however i forgot my HR strap but still had my 910xt.

SO I HAD HR FREEDOM. I decided to see what i could do in my 1:00 considering i have not run hard in 4 months. the proof is in the pudding,

I averaged 7:10 miles for 8 miles a feat i have not done in aat least 6 years. Last year I ran the 10k at 195 punds and ran 48:02 this year I will run at 172 pounds and who knows what my time will be but I am expecting big results!!

I guess the moral to the story is trust your plan !!

Yes, go into "mode", "settings", "run settings" (or bike settings), then scroll down to "heart rate" and enter in your zones.  That should work. Anything you every need on the Garmin is almost always somewhere in settings.

Terrible run this morning.  Didn't really want to get out of bed, and 50 degrees again, 20-25 mph headwinds ... just wasn't in the mood for the wind today!!!

Very impressive.  I rely on my watch for everything.  Not sure if that is good or bad, but it works for me.

Jeff - what's your non profit?

The name of it is Northeast Opportunities for Wellness (N.O.W.). We provide Sports, Nutrition and Fitness instruction and education to families in Northeastern part of CT. Alot of it is focused on underprivlidged kids that never really get the opportunity to participate in youth sports due to finances.  Right now we hire Professional Soccer coaches to run our soccer programs, and incorporated with that, is fitness, wellness, and nutrition instruction to these kids with the hope they and their families will change their bad habits as well. We think our programs are unique becasue we offer those different aspects that kids are missing. We are also starting to work with football and basketball, and will be providing the same professional coaching and clinics, often times at no charge.

One of the really unique events we have coming up is a "parents night out".  What it really is, is a cooking and nutritional class, on what to cook and feed your children. We have hired a few chefs to put an an actual cooking class, with some hands on.  We know that we can teach the kids all day long, but if the parents aren't doing what the kids are taught, it's wasted time.

We have a long way to go, but we grown tremnedously in the last 18 months.  It really is an amazing program.

kelly, I do have and will be getting sponsors for the back of the shirt, and have 2 major sponsors already.  I am also doing everything myself to cut cost, other than the timing company.  I think your registration fee is higher than mine as yours is a 10k and mine is a 3.5 miler.  I'm only charging $20, and profit is $6.75 after ALL expenses.  That includes Free T-Shirt, Logo Water Bottle, and basic food and water after.  Also, kids race is $10, and every kid gets a finisher medal.  Sponsors help tremendously.

I can understand this.  I aimed to raise $1000 for my first 5k (Komen), and I felt as if I were harassing people.  Perhaps it's because I'm actually very shy IRL.  I wouldn't raise money for Komen again, because they cut funding for Planned Parenthood, but I digress.  I'd rather donate my own time or money to help an organization or cause than ask people for money.

Fortunately, I do have many ties in the community, as does the rest of our board. Businesses are more than willing to donate to good causes etc.  I feel I do my share of volunteer work and donate plenty of my own money, so I don't feel bad soliciting. I never double dip or harass anyone about it, nor do I pressure people.  I can certainly respect a NO for an answer though.

That's the other thing.  My races are me -- there's no board -- so I'm the only one to do the asking.  At thins point, I figure it works, I know I could raise more but I do ok on my own.
