Just kidding, plus I don't much care about the flatter stages, but I am glad they have put in intermediate sprints . . . that at least makes it more exciting.

uhcoog - 2011-07-06 9:48 AM Question.  If you had a chance to get a lactate profile done on the bike or run which would you choose?

I think my wife had one of those when our first child was born.

Jeff I hear what you're saying on the HR training.  I also know how I was raised in Texas sports to approach training.  You run until you puke and then you run some more.  You lift until you find yourself stuck under the weight and then a buddy lifts it off of you.  Just a mindset that's so beat (literally) into me that I have fight it daily.

you were raised in Texas and can read?  good for you!!

Seriously, its hard to go slow.

Alright alright.  I will not post in the forum about the Manx Missile, but I cannot refrain in my training log.  Plus tomorrow's stage is "lumpy" so the chance of a Cav victory is slim (now Goss is a different story).

You can love on Cav, just don't spoil the race for those of us smart enough to have left the northeast.

Kelly and Karen - my cart is full at lululemon.com - thanks, I think!! LOL

On my run this morning, I had an immediate really sharp pain in the back lower calf area - soleus muscle strain. Ugghh. Any recommendations to  healing it quickly? My race is in just over 2 weeks and I will be so disappointed if I can't race. I have been stretching it all day at work, but will ice it, keep it up and keep taking some advil. Anything else?

Got in a nice swim this afternoon, too. Also realized my tri is in about 25 days...minor panic time!

Good morning good morning!

Heading out to bike (trying to find a good new route because my normal route is under construction for the next 5 weeks).  Then I'm going to try to be more productive today (its a lumpy TdF stage so  likely no Cav).  Massage this afternoon and then a tempo run tonight.

Glad we've converted you.

Really all you can do for the muscle the strain is rest, ice and compression.  If you feel a knot (not swelling but an actual knot) you can work on rolling it out or doing self massage (also stretching may help if its a strain and not a tear).  I had a similar injury before my first tri and all I could do was rest and ice.  I'm not the biggest of advil, I'm a much bigger fan of cherries, which are a natural anti-inflammatory and omega-3 fish oils, which help promote healing.

Good Morning!  Early swim (cut a bit short by foot cramp!), coffee, eggs, ready to start the day!

Question on swimming.  I know I need to swim more.  Is my time best spent doing straight swims, or mixing it up by adding in drills, pull, kick, etc.  When I was swimming more last year at masters, we always did a variety.  But since I have slacked off I feel like I would be better off just swimming and not worrying about drills, kick or pull.  I want to get back to the pace I was swimming at, and more time in the water is key, but how should I spend that time?  Thoughts?

Good morning, everyone!

Michele - Hope your calf is feeling better today!

Karen - I'm sure there are more experienced swimmers here who can weigh in, but I'll tell you what has worked for me.  For the last 5 months, I've been swimming more (no drills at all).  It seemed like my swim progress had stalled.  Over the last month, I've added in some drills.  It's amazing!  I clocked some 1:30/100m this week, and it was all easy swimming.  There were a few flaws in my stroke that I needed to work on, so I picked drills that would address those flaws.  Perhaps you could do drills 1 x per week, do speed 1 x per week, and swim long 1 x.  Don't know if that would work for you.  You can also just do 400m of drills before you swim your normal workout.  That way you have the best of both worlds.

7 miles at a slow pace this a.m., and then I'm heading out to Fairport Harbor to work on OWS.  I've got to get used to this darn wetsuit.  I'm hoping I don't swim near any dead fish today

OK, great TdF last night, although I fell asleep before the end, but I did get to see ALL the crashes.

I don't think there are any better sportscasters than Paul, Phil and Bob (OK and Robbie and Craig).  They turn what could be a very boring show into a nail biting race every single day.  They are just amazing!!!

I think I have found my pre-long run nutrition . . . plain bagel with peanut butter and honey on it.  It is delicious and has the calories needed, but still don't know if I can put down a full bagel cuz it feels kind of heavy unless I eat 2 hrs prior.  hhhmmm

Had fun this morning at the gym talking to a bunch of avid lifters about nutrition for endurance events.  More specifically supplements.  They tend to be amazed at the performance we get off food and limited supps.  They spend hundreds of dollars a month on testosterone boosters, and pre workout powders and fat burners, etc.  To think I used to do that too.  Amazes me really that they buy into this "Will raise your test levels 400% in a month" BS.

Anyway.  Good swim and good ride this morning.  Long run tomorrow may be a bit brutal if the temp forecasts are accurate.

I was really hoping my wetsuit was going to arrive today or tmrw.  I leave for Cape Cod on Saturday, and it looks like it is scheduled to be delivered on Monday.   UGHHHHH.   Was hoping to get some use and practice in the Cape.  I may have to make the 2 1/2 hour ride home to pick the darn thing up.

JSklarz- I actually disagree. (not about the yankees, love the yankees.  jeter is 3 hits away from 3,000)  But this being my first year into this sport, I actually love watching the TdF.  Last nights crashes, and the sprint at the end were pretty exciting.  I had read one of Lance Armstrong's books earlier in the year, and now having a better understanding on how the Peloton works, and the pace cars (if that's what you call them), I enjoy watching it so much more.

I envy the fact the water there is still cool enough to use a wetsuit.  Water temp is HOT here.  We're taking a long weekend on Galveston the 15th through 17th and I've been ordered not to bring my bike but suit, goggles, and shoes are going.  :D

You actually may want to consider trying something a little less filling. You would be amazed how few calories you "need" to complete a workout, even a long run. In general, you can run upwards of 60min+ in just glycogen already in your lives and muscles when you wake up. It's been shown that general aerobic efforts, not higher intensity efforts, done on fewer calories stimulates out bodies fat oxidation much better. By having a lot of high calorie, hi glycemic index pre-training food, we spiuke our blood sugar and our metabolic efficicency is supressed. Just something to consider, but in general, most triathletes eat way too much pre-training.

you might see if there is a tri shop close by the cape to rent one whie you are there-not quite the same as having your own on, but would save the rt drive.
