So I went and spectated my first tri today.  70.3 in Galveston.  That was rough to not race.  Oh and I'd never really paid any attention to the mount/dismount area.  What a cluster ____.  OMG.

Conrad and I came down with a stomach bug at Great Wolf Lodge.  The last 48 hours have been pure hell.  Anyway, I feel extremely dehydrated.  All the nutrients have been sucked from my body.  Anyone have and tips for rehydration that they swear by?  At this point I feel as if only an IV bag would do the job.  LOL  I'm just going to keep pumping water, a little gatorade, etc.  This is Conrad's last day of break, and my mother took Madge for 1/2 the week, so I'm hopeful I can get the 3 boys to chill and watch a movie this afternoon, so I can catch a little rest on the couch.

I got in my run yesterday, even though I thought I was going to vomit the entire time.  I have no idea why I'm so stubborn.  Anyway, I can't seem to get the hang of training by HR.  Do you try to start off slow, so your HR rises slowly?  I went out too fast, and my heart rate kept getting higher and higher, so I had to back way off my pace until I was practically walking.  Help?

It can be tough to adjust to HR training.  The easiest way to do it is to start off at the very bottom of the zone you're looking to run in.  Because you will naturally experience cardiac drift during the run (that is your HR will drift up even as the pace stays the same) you essentially look to hold the same pace throughout the run and have your HR slowly drift up towards the top of the zone by the end of the run.  For the first weeks of HR training, pace doesn't matter.  As you get used to HR training your pace for a given HR will start to come down.

Trust it.  It will be frustrating in the beginning but it will work.

Yes, trust in HR training.  I struggled in the beginning, hated feeling like I was crawling at a snails pace.  But it gets easier, and you will see results.  Don't worry about pace, just keep HR in correct zone.  Pace will pick up soon enough.

How did Lance look?  Oh how I wish I could have been there...

I didn't see the finish.  I think I had at least 10 really close friends racing and 50+ people I knew overall so I was here and there and everywhere.  Plus my club had responsibility for an aid station so I did some handing out of sponges.

Lance looked good coming out of the water.  He came out on the back end of the lead pack.  I really think he hit the bike too hard.  He looked spent during the run.  Actually I was standing at the dismount line when he came in.  He dismounted and I remember wondering out loud how long it would be until #2 showed up and no sooner did I turn my head than people started to roll in behind.  I knew he was done.

One of my buddies put up a 4:33.  His HR monitor wasn't working on the way out on the bike.  It had him pegged at 220.  LOL.  He decided he was probably over doing it when he ran into the back of the women pros pack.

Overall that is a well run race and I see no reason I won't hit it up darn near every year from here on out.
