Those are some intense clouds, Carrie!

So here I am staying up late smoking 2 briskets for tomorrow. Heading to a pot luck for our hockey league (I decided to sign back up, it's been a couple of seasons) and the kickoff party/team unveiling. Should be a good time. I'm going to hit the sack for a few hours and then get back up and check the briskets.

Jen- Kick a$$ tomorrow.

Steve- I've been looking for a weekend when I have enough free time to smoke a brisket, and some chickens, and a pork butt, and maybe some sausage, but a good sized brisket takes damn near 24 hours.  When do I have that kind of time to tend to a fire?

So I read Mary Eggers latest blog post.  Something there made the concept of recovery workouts click.  I'm so hard headed.

Go get 'em Jen! You'll do great!Steve I am jealous! Would love to smoke a good brisket. It is the only thing I have not smoked yet.I have my duathlon with the team later today. I will post how it goes later. This morning it is cleaning up branches and figuring out how to get the two oak trees that fell behind the house cut up. That storm last night was a doozy!

I wish we would get a storm, it's hotter than heck here!  Did run #1 this morning, and even at 5:30am it was thick!  I weighed myself before and after, and taking the water I drank into consideration, I still lost 5 pounds.  That's crazy, you could have wrung me out after.  Trying to hydrate before run #2 tonight.

Have a great race Jen!

Great job!

So some interesting numbers at least to me. At the halfway point of the year 2012 vs the full year 2011:

Swim 159100/250565 Yd 63%
Bike  2544.9/3026.12 Mi 84%
Run 477.83/675.8 Mi 71%
...
June which included a taper and recovery over a race vs May which was my largest month ever in all three disciplines:

Swim 20600/32650 Yd 63%
Bike 323.7/518.52 Mi 62$
Run 50.29/103.1 Mi 49%

The yearly total obviously shows just how much I've stepped it up for the HIM level this year and the precipitous drop from June to May shows just how beat up I am from it. Two weeks post race I still feel fatigued but ten weeks out from Pumpkin no choice but to keep it up. After Pumpkin I was thinking about doing a marathon at the end of September but there's no way. I'm taking 2-3 weeks off completely when that's done.

Oooh a subject I know a lot about having a weightlifting and supplement background.

Basically almost all supplement companies that market to weightlifters are shady or are too small to put the QA processes in place to make sure their substances are pure or don't get cross contaminated by other products they make.  See just about every company makes products that are WADA compliant and more that aren't in the same facilities on the same machinery.  Sooo when they don't ensure proper cleaning so there is no cross contamination you end up with stuff in products that aren't listed on the label.  Not to mention the fact that just about every ingredient in a product has 4 to 10 different correct ways to name it.  It's maddening.  There is a reason that pro sports leagues have a list of approved supplements.

Oh and who knows that there are very legal over the counter steroids that you can buy in your local Nutrition Depot or online?  Actually less safe than injectibles because they have to pass through the liver to be processed instead of going directly into the bloodstream.  What's worse is they're not labeled as steroids so they are sold to people who don't know exactly what they are and these folks totally mess up their endocrine system.

Honestly it's crazy and I don't know how more elite level folks don't get popped unknowingly taking banned substances.

So Scott, I get the cross contamination with shared equipment not properly cleaned, but would the amount really be that significant to show up in testing? It seems trace amounts would be insignificant.

And what would an over the counter steroid be called? I used to buy supplements a lot, like CLA, glucommen, but your comment about people not knowing what they are taking is a bit scary. Do you know the names of some? And what section would it be in? I'm usually in the weight loss, not body building section, so maybe no need to worry.

Look, I have been good all month!!!  And I never lie on this log ... a few more weeks and maybe I can test the running.  My chiro is doing some x-rays for $20 Tuesday so maybe we will know for sure.  I guess not is about the best time to see if the bone is healing ...

June's totals:
Bike:12h 35m 44s  - 184.05 Mi
Run:1h 07m  - 6.1 Mi
Swim:3h 28m 54s  - 10160 Yd

Kayaking:3h 30m

Thanks for explaining the cross contamination.  Like Karen, I wonder how contaminated a substance must be to show up on a drug test (I would think trace amounts, too).

An aside, and this is my personal opinion - I don't athletes need to be taking so many supplements.  Just eat a solid diet, take a multivitamin, maybe some fish oil, but the others?  I don't like it, and I don't get it.  Jessica Hardy was 16 when she tested positive...right?  No need for all that.

Off to Akron to race.....

Started July off on the right foot with a 55 mile 3 hour ride that was hilly has hell. The biggest climb was 221 ft in just under 2 miles according to map my ride. Even starting the ride at 5:30 it was so hot and sticky. I'm going up this hill at all of about 11 MPH and looking down at my chain as the sweat drips off my nose I think to myself, I think it's so hot and sticky that my chain is starting to carmelize from the oil getting clumpy. LOL the weird things that cross your mind when training.

Oh and coming back down that hill it's curvy too so I was out of aero and on the horns. We hit the bottom and we looked at each other with that wow that was scary look.

just in from a run and it's already hot out. This whole no clouds and no breeze makes it worse.

I don't know that cross contamination is that prevelant.  It does happen however.  I also know that many supplement companies source their raw ingredients in China and that is kinda iffy as to purity.  The only thing most of us would have to worry about are fat burners that use non WADA compliant stimulants.

As far as legal steroids they go under a ton of names.  Mdrol, Superdrol, Epistane, and the list could go on and on.  Most are marketed as "testosterone boosters".

So lets see.  Today's ride was supposed to be 48 miles, but I got lost.  In the process of trying to find my way back to the route I got run off the road.  The truck's side view mirror clipped my shoulder.  Pretty much knocked me off the road and into some sand.  Then I decided to use my GPS on my phone to get me back to where I needed to be.  Ofcourse it decides to take me down a road that becomes a dirt road at a point.  Such a wonderful ride today.

2:40 in my olympic today.  1st F 30-34 (obviously a small, local field), and 4th OA.  I had a craptastic swim (psyched myself out once I saw that it was a 2 lap course that looked loooooong), kick bike, and decent run (for me).  It was 90+ out, and I am very beat.  Swam with the kids in the lake for about an hour after the race.  I think I'm going to go take a nap.  Kids are tired from 4 hours of outdoor activity in the heat, so they will be joining me.

That's awesome Jen.  Congrats.

I'm fine.  Knocked me off the road to the right and into a nice mud puddle as it was raining pretty good at that point.  Already cleaned the bike, need to clean the chain, and I may have to take it in to see why it's stuck in the small ring.
