jarvy01 - 2012-07-01 2:54 PM 2:40 in my olympic today.  1st F 30-34 (obviously a small, local field), and 4th OA.  I had a craptastic swim (psyched myself out once I saw that it was a 2 lap course that looked loooooong), kick bike, and decent run (for me).  It was 90+ out, and I am very beat.  Swam with the kids in the lake for about an hour after the race.  I think I'm going to go take a nap.  Kids are tired from 4 hours of outdoor activity in the heat, so they will be joining me.

2:40 is great!! Congrats! Looking forward to your report! Enjoy your nap.

That's awesome Jen.  Congrats.

I'm fine.  Knocked me off the road to the right and into a nice mud puddle as it was raining pretty good at that point.  Already cleaned the bike, need to clean the chain, and I may have to take it in to see why it's stuck in the small ring.

Glad you weren't hurt.

So lets see.  Today's ride was supposed to be 48 miles, but I got lost.  In the process of trying to find my way back to the route I got run off the road.  The truck's side view mirror clipped my shoulder.  Pretty much knocked me off the road and into some sand.  Then I decided to use my GPS on my phone to get me back to where I needed to be.  Ofcourse it decides to take me down a road that becomes a dirt road at a point.  Such a wonderful ride today.

Motorists suck. I know a guy who got knocked out the same way that you got knocked off the road. I had a truck buzz me last week for no reason when he had the entire road to give me some space and I was actually only 6 inch off the grass as it was. This morning this guy lays on his hom coming up behind us on a pretty wide road and again me were as far right as possible riding single file. He had his windows down so as he pass I told him to pull the F over and all he did was give us the bird out of his sun roof. Total chicken bleep.

Glad you're ok.

Question - what causes bloating during a race?  I seem to have this during the run portion of my olys, and I'm not quite sure why.

Also, why all the water retention in the few days after a race?  I seem to retain about 4 lbs. of fluid and look like 12 weeks pregnant again.  It's gross.

I did the flexibility section of my athletic yoga dvd this morning, and I feel soooo much better.  Really stretched everything out.  I'm taking the younger boys to the pool this morning, and then I hope to catch a few winks this afternoon.  All that time in the heat yesterday left me feeling really fatigued.  It looks like it's going to be another hot week.  This summer is crazy.

You take in too much sport drink on the bike Jen?  IDK.  Bloating is usually caused by a sodium/fluid imbalance one way or another in my experience.  Might be as easy as fine tuning your race nutrition.

I don't think think I took in too much sports drink on the bike.  I did take in a gel without water as I was running out of T2.  Could that cause it?  Only water during aid stations on the run (there were only 2 stations, and they offered water or Heed).  I won't drink Heed because it's just plain nasty, and I really only wanted water then anyway.

I don't think so.  That said I don't like taking in nutrition until I settle into a rhythm on the run.  Just a personal preference though.  And yes, HEED is nasty.

Heed is NASTY ... it is normal to retain water after a race.  It is your body's way or healing from the hard workout you just put it through .... it is the inflammation from the race.

I burp a lot because of all the wind I inhale I think. Might be a contributing factor.

Agreed on the Heed. I grabbed one at one of the aid stations at my last race because the gatorade I was carrying was warm and I took one sip and dumped it. Too nasty.

Bloating and water retention are two seprate things.  Bloating is likely caused by no getting in enough electrolytes (e.g. drinking just water and having gels with a no or low electrolyte profile).

Carrie is right on water retention.  When you race / train hard you cause lots of little micro adhesions in your muscle tissues and, which inflames as part of he healing process, thus you retain water.

karen26.2 - 2012-06-30 7:15 PM So Scott, I get the cross contamination with shared equipment not properly cleaned, but would the amount really be that significant to show up in testing? It seems trace amounts would be insignificant.

And what would an over the counter steroid be called? I used to buy supplements a lot, like CLA, glucommen, but your comment about people not knowing what they are taking is a bit scary. Do you know the names of some? And what section would it be in? I'm usually in the weight loss, not body building section, so maybe no need to worry.

The issue is when you have a banned substance (e.g. clenbuteral) any indication of the substance in the blood stream is enough to trigger a positive test.  So, the amount in the bloodstream/urine stream may be miniscule BUT if its at all detectable it results in a postive test.

IMO it's hard to get clen in your system w/o knowing it's going into your system since it's by script or gray market.

We already do.  Look at aero helmets -- definately going in that direction.

Yeah, I'll give you that.  There have been several fat burners in the last decade that when tested have been shown to have mystery ingredients that weren't listed on the label.  Probably why they actually worked LOL.

Scott - That recipe is something I would make  Were they any good?  I made a Mexican 2 bean soup in the crockpot yesterday, which turned out to be keeper.  Crockpots on Mondays and Wednesdays because we're busy driving the kids to swim practices and lessons.

Bike/run this morning.  Legs felt dead and tired.  Hopefully tomorrow's swim will help.  Since it's the 4th and my husband is off work, I don't have to leave for the gym until 6.
