Jo63 - 2013-03-24 8:34 PM I think I am finally back on track I didn't miss a workout this week and yesterday morning it was so nice out I went for a run and did some hill repeats, it felt great. After last weeks crazy Monday workout I decided enough was enough and I got my nutrition really on track and I am again feeling so much better even with all the workouts I have not been fatigued at all which is usually what happens when I meet all the training, I am actually looking forward to each session ...........progress!!!

Jo I am glad to see you are back it!!!  Keep it going!

RunningYogini - 2013-03-24 7:40 PM Air temp was 39* and the water was in the low 50's.  I wore two silicone swim caps.  I need to buy a neoprene one.  I'll try the ear plugs next time.  It's worth a try.  I can always pull them out if they mess with me.

That's hardcore, you're a full fledged member of the HTFU club!

With the air so cold, I bet the water felt warm at first, but low 50s is serious!  Lake water?  For some reason ocean water at the same temp feels a lot warmer.

It's a salt water lagoon.  My friend in the kayak was totally bundled up.  Her husband asked her if she was going skiing! Smile  I forgot to mention that we saw the resident elk when we left.  They are almost always hanging out around this area.

Um, I don't think so! This definitely puts you at the top of the list for the HTFU of the year trophy ! I will be in the pool until the water temp hits 65

You guys still doing Wednesday weigh-ins? Just curious.

still weighing, but not moving! I have been stuck at 18 for 2 months, I just don't want to give up my pizza!

I'm at 15, down 13.  Have had three really good weeks of dropping out **most** of the ice cream.

On the food front, I posted this scary article on facebook about junk food and the science behind keeping us (and our kids) addicted to it.

I did see that article you posted.... as I was eating a snack bag of Doritos of all things.

I'm down 6 from the beginning of the year, but the 2 pounds I lost last week don't really count. My goal is to be about 4 more pounds lighter, but not sure how serious I am about those last 4 lbs.

I saw the article on FB but didn't read it.  I kind of got the gist of it from reading some of the posts and I am certainly not surprised.  Greed runs deep through corporations but to be honest I won't find a lot of fault with them.  Every one of us has our own points of greed.  When we condemn corporations, or other individuals, yet condone our own greed because it is simply our own, for our own personal reasons, I feel we are preaching hypocrisy.

But enough of my political perspective.

I have been weighing but not posting.  As of this morning I am at "10 pounds."  Target was hit!  I am not certain just yet that I will count it.  I entered 157 pounds in my log this morning but and I won't make the change until I see 155 for at least a few days.  There is too much fluctuation for me to make the permanent weight.  I have followed this kind of scaling for a few years now and it seems to provide a better picture of my actual weight.

Dirk - Very well said.

Tracy I agree with Samantha that is just crazy. I can't even imagine doing an OWS here. We'll be lucky if it is warm enough to get in there by memorial day weekend.

Well I finally finished Jorge's winter cycling program and am still alive to talk about it. It was 16 weeks of pain, suffering and misery but I have to say it was well worth it. I think I have definitely improved both my bike conditioning and my overall conditioning. This should go a long way for me this year. For everybody else still doing it there is definitely light at the end of the tunnel.

Congrats of completeing JOrge's training plan. I'm now down to sticking with one of his workouts one day a week, but still trying to get at least 3 rides in a week.

Not sure if baby Claire has made her great entrance yet, but praying for mama and baby. Congrats to you dad! Yes, as Karl said.... your training is over, but only for a little while! Just wait till baby Claire is old enough to put in a jogging stroller/bike trailer..... then you will get to experience a new world of running.

Air temp here is about 43° (feels like 38° right now and the water temp at this coming Staurday's sprint tri is 62°. I was seriously considering pulling out of the race if temps stay where they are.... then, you had to go and post about swimming in 50-degree water while the air temp is in the 30's.... I better not chicken out now.

michgirlsk - 2013-03-23 3:38 PM Geez louise I made it!  100 runs in 100 days!  And with a day to spare, too!  I feel like I've constantly been running on tired legs the past few weeks (maybe even months) and I am looking forward to some REST! (relatively speaking.) Today marks 3 weeks until my half marathon, and I think I need a 3 week taper.  I haven't been getting as many quality runs as I'd like (faster paced 800s/1600s/tempo etc) so I will be trying to get 1-2 runs of those per week for the remaining time.

Like Dirk was suggesting, I also want to put in a plug against tapering too much.

But first, I want to recognize your accomplishment in completing this challenge!  That's seriously awesome!  All that running on tired legs actually pushes you to improvement over time even if it's not entirely pleasant.

Quality runs now are just fine, but if they are at faster than your HM race pace they aren't providing you any more value come race day than the same distance at a slower pace...Up to target race pace would be a very good idea though.

Don't let your weekly mileage drop more than 15% from your recent norm until 1 week to race day.  If you do you can actually de-train before the race day.

Good luck!

62* water would be FABULOUS!  Don't back out!  62* is the water temp in the race I do every July in central Oregon.  It's great!

Kudos to Tony for sticking with Jorge's program all the way!

and Kudos to Tracy for being rock hard and swimming in those conditions!  Wowza!

Now on to me and my happenings:

Friday I took a vacation day because I was feeling so sleep deprived I feared I was going to break.  And I had a double-header race weekend planned.  I slept in, did house chores, napped, and ultimately did no workout on Friday.  Strangely, my heels hurt pretty bad on Friday.

Saturday morning I met my 2 daughters for our 15k trail run.  The weather was decent for this, perhaps 50 and overcast, but no rain.  The trails were moist but not wet with a half dozen puddles and slick curves to deal with but overall pretty good.

Morgan has been sporadically running for the last few months and for her to finish a 15k on these fairly severe trails is a big deal.  She won her age group (but was the only one that was 19-under).  Jordan took 2nd in her age group!  I don't have times yet.

I finished 8th OA and won the master's division again.  I heard a time being called out when I finished but don't know the fractional minute.  It's going to be around a minute faster than last year, and that's good, but I wish my improvement were greater.  I trained well and hard all year and should be better.

My heels were killing me Saturday and the warmup was excruciating.  During the race the pain went away fairly quickly and stayed away the entire run.  But upon finishing it got so bad I was practically incapacitated.  I couldn't really walk the rest of the day and Sunday was no better.  Set a new benchmark high for pain from this issue I've had 2 years now.  At this pain level I have a hard time getting myself out of bed or off the couch.

Overnight the rain came in and soaked everything pretty well.  The mtn bike race on Sunday was extremely wet and muddy.  To top it off it began to pour down pretty steadily just as the races were being started.

Jordan chickened out because of the mud and I support that knowing how she's new to mtn biking and already seriously scared by the trails in good conditions.

I also declined to race having sworn off mud-racing a couple seasons ago due to broken bike parts, contusions, and all around misery.

But Morgan, wasn't intimidated enough to back down from her first mtn bike race.  Being her Dad I was really worried that she would have a horrible experience and never want to mtn bike again.  She is even newer and less experienced at it than her sister Jordan, but from her first time on the bike she seemed to simply ride with very little uncertaintly or fear.

Since muddy conditions tend to break me, I was sure it would her too.  I talked her through the start, the issues and differences in the mud, and about NOT racing.  In the mud, and at her level of experience, she would be faster if she DIDN'T 'race'.  Turns out she did just fine!  Only fell once!

We drove all around the park during the race getting soaked so we could see her at various points.  She liked that and seemed to always flash a smile each time.  And I got to 4-wheel through mud all around the place in doing so!

Because there aren't many cat 3 (beginner) women willing to brave that mud-fest, she got on the podium too.  Oh, and lest you think she only finished...The first time I saw her at mile 2 she had already passed at least 5 MEN who had started in the wave ahead of her.

And of course, my feet hurt so bad I could definitely not run Sunday.  But this morning I was determined to try.  Swim practice helped.  That was nice to workout without feeling PAIN for a while.  But the swim itself sucked.  Might have been the day off yesterday, or the fact that I haven't swam in 2 weeks while the pool was closed or maybe I threw another clot to my lungs...It felt that bad.   But I made it through and then went to run.

I made it 4 miles in under 50 minutes.  So Yep...started out at 3.5 mph at first.  Almost a shuffle-in-place pace.  Pretty pathetic.  Eventually ramped up to 5.5 mph by the end.  And it did help somewhat.  Wish me luck in the days to come.

If you are a facebook friend you may have already seen pictures of Morgan's day in the mud.  If not, look me up and friend me.

Oh...Jordan pulled the trigger yesterday and registered for the Country Music Marathon on the 28th of April.  Just over 5 weeks from now.

Jeeze lou-eeeeezzzz Jeff... Wow.. that's all I can say. Congrats on taking 1st place in the Master's division and for placing 8th OA, a feat in and of itself.

I am inspired and wish you the best of luck with the heel spur pain. Ouch.

I'm totally excited for your daughters and thank you for sharing their adventures. I look forward to hearing how Jordan does in the marathon.

I hope that my girls will follow in my footsteps. I pushed them in a double jogger on our first 10k together on Saturday. My four-year old blew bubbles for half the race and we finished in 1:02:27, near the back of the pack. I was the only stroller pusher and many people had to come talk to me afterward. I am now starting to think about pushing them in a HM before the year is over. There is a small HM in town in December and it is hilly, but to run 13.1 while pushing them would be a pretty awesome feeling.

The facebook pics are great Jeff, looked like a fun if dangerous race.

I have some swim comments after revisiting some of my swim video.  Some of the truly fast swimmers can elaborate or call bull on me if need be.  My caveat is that I do VERY little swim training, certainly to a fault.  However, two years ago I had some reasonably fast swim times including a 33 minute half swim and was typically near the front out of the water, despite not burning too hard.  This past year - not so much.  I don't expect great swim results since I train less in a year than some of you do in a week, and while I don't recommend that as a training approach, the video told an interesting story.

Two years ago, the video showed I had a very high elbow catch and an early catch as well, meaning almost no gliding.  I had only learned to swim the year before but I found I was admittedly "natural and comfortable" in the water (why can't that be running?????).  I was lucky enough to receive some pointers from a friend who happens to coach, including video analysis.

The high elbow catch was his one big, big pointer for me to work on, and I took it heart I guess.  Fast forward to video taken this past year, and though my body position is at least as good if not better, I now swim with a windmill type catch and a pretty long glide (to lower stroke count/rate), a very different looking stroke than before.  The idea was to make for an easier swim, but I didn't feel any fresher out of the water than before with a much faster stroke with less gliding.

So while I think body position needs to be at least ok, if your position is at least functional and you are comfortable in the water, the catch seems to be a pretty important part of going faster.

Jeff congrats to you, Morgan and Jordan for your performances in the trail run this past weekend. That's pretty awesome that you guys all made the podium and got to race together. Also great job by Morgan for not only doing the mtn bike race but actually racing it in those conditions but getting on the podium. I'm sure your very proud of their efforts.

I'm sorry to hear about the heels acting up on you and I can't imagine how bad that has been for you lately. I'm pretty sure it has to be bad if you are describing it as excruciating pain. I'm not sure what you can do about that Jeff but I'm hoping things will be good enough for you to get through this season especially knowing how hard you've been working this offseason.

Warren I agree with you. I did a lot of reading on this up on swimsmooth and my biggest problem is I'm a glider for sure. So one thing that I have been working on is increasing my stroke count and working on my catch. I think that has definitely helped me as I have a tendancy to stall and then sink. Having that happen makes me have to work that much harder. I also have to say I do envy you for being a natural and being comfortable in the water and being able to swim fast and easy without having to put in as much time in the water.

I was finally able to swim today as the pool was finally reopened after being closed for two weeks. It took a while to get back into a rythym with my breathing. It's like I almost forgot how to do it. Not so much of a problem to the right but it took me several laps to be able to do it to the left and to be able to breathe out properly into the water. It seems like swimming is the worse thing to have a long layoff from.

The good thing was I found my rythym and the lifeguard didn't have to save me thankfully that would have been quite embarassing. The pool was soooooo crowded today. About 1000m's in a group of like 15 to 20 kids show up thankfully they roped off a few more lanes or I would have been done early. There was no way to swim with all those kids in there.

Warren I agree with you. I did a lot of reading on this up on swimsmooth and my biggest problem is I'm a glider for sure. So one thing that I have been working on is increasing my stroke count and working on my catch. I think that has definitely helped me as I have a tendancy to stall and then sink. Thanks Tony, I'm  not saying I swim really fast or anything like that, and I'd trade it for some natural run talent in a heartbeat!

My wife and I are at the hospital.  Baby Claire should be here some time Monday!

Awesome!  Prepare for a great ride.  You'll hear this a gazillion times, but it FLIES by.  Enjoy every moment.
