newbz - 2010-09-15 6:50 PM the DT swiss is an awesome all around wheel, and fits well with a disk cover if you want to go that route as well.
I probably will. The issue is...do I really need that Joule 2.0 computer if I have a 310XT? Should I do it and just sell the thing on ebay???

The joule offers a ton of features the 310xt does not.  But as with power in general...it means nothing unless you are willing to utilize it effectively in your workouts.

If I were you, I'd go for the deal, sell the joule on ebay for about $350 and get a wheel cover.

Newbz from another thread:

"in my frist year swimming i went from hardly making it through 50 to being able to ave just under 2min per 100 over 2000m, swimming 3x per week for roughly 2000 yards. "

So, how did you go from 2 min per 100 to where you are today?  Lots and lots of practice?  Coaching?

newbz - 2010-09-16 7:38 PM start at the front, if they are that much slower (waves in front), then just swim slightly wide but close enough you get a draft off each one.

Thanks David - I just hope that I can see (even a little) at the last tri the water was so murkey I might of well had my eyes closed - couldn't draft b/c I couldn't see anyone even when I was getting kicked!

I think I will start in or close to the front, but slightly to the side that way I at least won't have to deal with the slower swimmers in my own heat.

Just got back from an OWS. I'm starting to feel really good in OW. Worked on drafting, sighting and just being used to swimming right next to someone. I was able to get in a 5.5 mile run with Jamie right before the swim.

I'm finally starting to get into a routine after going back to work and hopefully will be getting in more training than I have been this past month. My next race is Sept 26 (next Sun). It's a sprint. I'm a little disappointed that I've had such a dip in my training volume, but like I said I knew that would happen with going back to work and being out of town 2 weekends in a row. I've decided that I will just have fun doing this sprint next weekend and try my best. As long as I can get back into consistent training, I should be good for my Oly at the end of Oct. Think I will focus on that race and the HM in Dec. I'm not gonna worry about next weekend.

I've continued to be pretty good about my eating. I'm down another 2 pounds, so I've lost a little over 15lbs since June. Def strange that some of my skinny clothes are getting a little big on me. I'm almost scared to buy a smaller size because I think "This can't be right. This can't really fit." I guess I'm just used to being bigger. I'm not complaining. I'm just saying it's weird.

Things have been pretty slow for everyone the past couple of weeks it looks like.  I have been focusing on the marathon training and somewhat out of touch with everything myself.

What are everyone's upcoming races?

I am considering a 5k race on a recovery week but (2 weeks out) but I am undecided.  I don't know if I should race that hard this close to my "A" race for..........well my life so far.  As I get close to the mary, I find myself getting a little more cautious, maybe worrying about getting sick, re-injuring my knee, etc......

Was reading this blog http://elizabethfedofsky.blogspot.com/2010/09/iron-time.html and wanted to share a section I really liked.

"The race itself does not define you. The efforts you put in to training and preparing yourself for the race will say more about you as a person than the race itself. Training needs to be a priority, but it does not need to consume you. Inevitably, life will happen. Road blocks will cause you to stumble in training, and the same is true on race day. Deal with the hurdle, make adjustments then move on. Today may not be your day. But it's just one day in your great life. Learn from it. Grow from it. And apply your new found wisdom to tomorrow."

Just something I needed to hear today. Motivated to have a good week

David,
I have a question about your suggested tempo runs.  I did my first one tonight (5 miles Tempo/8mile total) since you suggested doing these instead of intervals.  My averages looked like this; 7:17, 7:24, 7:17, 7:16 and 7:14.  Aside from the second mile the paces are about 20 seconds off my marathon goal pace.

What are your thoughts on these pacing miles?

This pace was hard but not horrible.  I am sure I could not sustain this pace for a full marathon but it would probably work for several more miles during another race.  Should I try to go harder during my next tempo session or am I in line with what you might expect?  (BTW, my marathon goal pace is 7;36)

I hear that....sort of in a slump because of buying the house and getting everything organized myself.  I pulled a muscle in the bottom of my left during my last race and I've been waiting for it to heal before running...which has been over a week now.  Getting annoyed.  I've only had a little bit of biking in there and almost no swimming.  As soon as we move in, I have to get unpacked and get motivated to get better at the run.  That's my goal for the fall.  Then we'll pick up on the bike and swim again late fall.  I am probably swimming masters starting October.  That should definitely help.

I def do not envy you for the move!  Moving SUCKS!  I am missing a lot of my swims too, but I need to miss some of them to get my extra runs in.  I am trying to do 1 a week but couldn't get one in last week because the pool filter was spewing sand.  Most of my X-training is coming from the bike anyway.  2 rides a week totaling 70-75 miles is all I can do with my schedule.

Good luck with the move and I hope you can get settled quick  and rehab the pulled muscle so you can get back to the training.

dirk, it will be somewhat distance related. a "true" tempo effort is half marathon pace or so, but most people (myself included) use a bit of leeway and adjust for total distace. IE if i were doing 3 miels at tempo pace i'd probably run it a bit faster than 8, etc. A good rule of thumb is you should be able to run another 3rd of time/distance at thatp ace. so if you do an hour at tempo, you should be able to run 1:30 at that pace. or a comfortable hard pace if you will.

After all that, yeah it sounds like you are in the right area. If you felt ok after that (and for the next run), next time try maybe going a tiny bit faster in the 2nd half, or making thefaster part a bit longer (dont do both in one run).

I did a treadmill run today for the 1st time in months. It felt so much easier than I remember and I was going at a decent pace (for me of course ). Maybe I am getting better at this running thing. I'm finally getting back into a routine after going back to work. I've decided to try and get in some short morning runs. I'll have to get up at 4:45am, so we'll see how it goes, but it maybe the only way to fit in all the running I need before the HM.

David- Since I started run about a year ago, all I've been doing are easy runs where I've been increasing my distance gradually. Should I stick with this or should I look to add other kinds of runs (tempo, etc)? I can now run 6 miles without needing to walk and have been consistent (with the exception of the last 3 weeks) about running 3-4 x a week. Let me know.

Other good news (unrelated to tri). Looks like we will be getting another 3rd grade! My class is very big this year and I was afraid it would stay that way, but my principal has told me we are getting a new teacher next week and I will have 7 less students. I'll miss the kids, but it will make things so much better for everyone.

are you paces still coming down (in races/otherwise?). if so, and you have time, i'd run a bit more vs faster. if they are not/you are running as much as you can, then it would be time to look to a bit of faster running.

Thanks Jackie! The wetsuit strippers really helped w/ TI - already had it off when I went in.

Also - awesome job with the running!  I know what you mean about the treadmill being easier now.  Do you have a race scheduled for this weekend?  If so, good luck! I will be out of town till next monday - camping in Yellowstone with the family Smile

I had a great 4 mile trail run today in the nearby mtns.  Aspens are turning gold (need to remember to occassionaly bring camera)! Somewhat sad though as I probably only have another month to 6 weeks before the snow sets in up there, then I have to wait til there is enough base to x-country ski Cry

Finally back home after a nice 6 day vacation which included a wedding rehersal, bachelor party/wedding (for a friend...I was one of his groomsmen), then a few nights at a beach house to continue the partying.

I don't think I've ever been so glad to be back from vacation.  Not that I didn't have a blast, but it's nice to get things back to normal and give my liver some time to recover...=P

Going out for a 11 mile run in a bit.  I didn't train much over the past 6 days other than a short bike ride the morning of the wedding.  Surprisingly I didn't gain any weight.

Anyway, time for me to buckle down.  Hope everyone else is doing well with their training.

Yes, I'm doing a sprint this Sunday. Have fun camping. I can't believe you'll be getting snow again soon. It's just starting to get under 100 degrees here during the day.

I guess the rest I got over my vacation helped a lot.  I felt amazingly good as soon as I started my 11 mile run, and decided to make it more of a tempoish run.  Managed to finish at a 8:45 pace...which is pretty darn fast for me.

Nice easy recovery run tomorrow and a short bike ride.
