tommy

I'm using Veloflex carbon tubulars and i run 125psi. For me, not too hard, kind of like the bouncing feeling you can get especially over rough surfaces. Not to soft either. Works good for me. these tires aren' righted as high of pressure as conti's they recommend 8-9 bar, its an italian tubular and doesn't list pounds, but when converted to pounds 116 - 130 rating.

Re: IMAZ 08

Let's review for a minute:

Possibilities of extreme...

1) Heat
2) Wind
3) Humidity (low)

all in the context of 140.6 miles.

What's there not to like about this?

Yeah!

ok - i cannot beleive the floatation you get with the wetsuit. i feel like my kick gets in the way.

do you guys just race with the wetsuit to get the max psychological benefit or train intermittently with it on?

I will swim 2-3 times with my wetsuit prior to a race that I will wear it. Yes, the wetsuit aide's in putting the body in the correct position. Swim a few times in it, you may feel strange but i bet your time is quite a bit faster.

I swam Lonestar (with wetsuit) in 2:00/100m and Tri de Mayo (without wetsuit)in 2:16/100m. The difference was the wetsuit. I like to swim in mine at every open water swim opportunity. I haven't plucked up the courage to use it at the YMCA yet; people might think I should be a good swimmer;-)

And I like to do at least one open water swim before each race (only 2 races thus far though).

I thought about putting my wetsuit on to walk back to the hotel at Cap Tex because it was raining so hard though.

I love swimming in a wetsuit.  I always use it if it's legal for the race.  The speed, floatation and efficiency are amazing.  And the psychological benefit of knowing you can just stop and float if you get in trouble is very reassuring.

It gives me enough confidence to do OWS by myself. It's a little different, but not hard to get use to. Just as in everything else; train like you're gonna race.

First time I ever swam in mine, I did it at my regular pool on a Saturday when there weren't many people there. Got some funny looks, but the lifeguards already knew I was the "weird tri guy" anyway.

Hey Group - had a couple of questions on T1 - sometimes i need a reality check on all the info that is out there

1. Do your wear your HR monitor strap under your wetsuit or put it on at T1? Not sure if this is water resistant.

2. T1 and Bike shoes - Put them on and mount or clip them in and run barefoot then mount the bike?

Thanks!

Scott

Scott,

I wear my HRM strap under my tri top and under my wetsuit.  I have the Timex Body Link.  It's water proof.  I wear the same clothes start to finish.  No changing in T1 or T2, even for IM.

T1 and bike shoes - do what ever you have trained to do.  Don't try the shoes on the bike thing if you haven't practiced it before in training.  In the past I put my shoes on my feet in T1 then ran in my shoes to the mount line and clipped in.  This season I've been practicing with my shoes already clipped in on the bike.  Every training ride I take off like I'm leaving T1 with my shoes clipped in.  When I return from the training ride, I take my feet out and do the flying dismount.

The main thing is to keep it simple.  The less you have to do and think about, the better.

same as tommy. I wear hrm under wetsuit and wear same clothes start to finish. That is my plan for imaz as well. Regarding shoes, I have shoes clipped in and run barefoot in t1 and going into t2 flying dismount.
the shoe thing definately is something you should practice though

I know you guys have races coming.  Have you thought about your race plan?  I usually write out a race plan for my races.   I try to think about every aspect of the race and write it out.

  • Swim
    • Where to start.
    • Pace
    • goal time
  • T1
    • Where's my bike
    • wetsuit off, strippers?
  •  Bike
    • Nutrition plan
    • pace, when, what distances
    • Bike clothes, socks, shoes?
    • goal time
  •  T2
    • Dismount
  •  Run
    • Run clothes
    • Nutrition plan
    • Pacing plan, pace, when, distances
    • Goal time

Just a few of the things I think about.  Any others you guys can come up with?  Over the next week or so I'll write my race plan and post it in my log.

I like to have a plan as well. Usually a few days in advance will have an agenda. Regarding swim portion its usually the morning off/day before if i check out the swim. I also like to chat with some just before race time. For example for BSLT, i want to go under 1:40 per 100m, i will talk with some of the other's in my group and get a feel for them. If unable to do this then i look for the best route, even if slightly longer to get to my first check point.

I post some items hear soon

I will post my plan as well. I could use a second set of eyes to push on the plan.

Question on race plan: there will be coca cola available during the run. Anyone know the benefits? If it makes sense, I may drink some on my next training run.

Race plans are a good starting place, and the simpler, the better. My first race or two, I wrote it all out and it served its purpose. Now, I have a pretty standard routine and it's commited to memory. Hydration and nutrition are the biggest things to plan out for long races.

Each venue is different, so knowing the TA layout is crucial to being smooth and mistake free. I walk through all the ins & outs to my rack spot several times.

Despite all the great planning, "things" happen and you have to instantly adapt and have a back-up plan or an idea what to do. One of the challenges of this sport is dealing with those "things" on race day and prevailing.

I haven't done the shoes-on-the-bike routine in a race yet. I've played with it some, but it's something that REALLY needs practice for it to be effective. Right now, I'm actually pretty fast in transition and don't have a compelling need to get to that next level. In my race report from Jun 10th, I made comments on how I passed 3 guys coming into T2 who were jacking with their shoes on the bike.

Each race is different as to what is offered for food and drink on the course. Most will have water & G-ade. HIM or longer will have a bigger variety. I've never had Coke in a race yet, but I'm thinking the sugar, caffeine, and taste hits the spot at that stage of a long day. After awhile, you're just wanting something "different".

Details of what's offered should be on their website, or you can email the RD.

Right now, I'm still working out what I'm going to do at BSLT next week. Man, it's getting close.

Coke late in the run leg is great.  Hopefully it's 'defizzed' (they open the bottles and let the CO2 escape so the Coke is flat).  After a long day of racing and drinking gatorade I feel like I need something different.  Coke does it.  Also chicken broth.  But usually chicken broth is only offered at IM distance races.  It's the sugar and the caffiene that gives you some benefit.

BSLT
------
I'm shooting high
ultimately if i get under 5:15 i will be very happy
but lets try some #'s
not knowing transition area and length away, i'll take a stab
----
swim: 32 min
t1: 3 min
bike: 2:45
t2: 2 min
run: 1:45
total: 5:07

If i can hit this I will go out feeling great

If everything hits on all cylinders along with nutrition, no mechanical issues, heat, wind, etc
swim: 30 min
t1: 2 min
bike: 2:40
t2: 1 min
run: 1:40
total: 4:53

if i get the above or even just break 5 hrs I will scream and do a cartwheel. I really hope my run form holds true, i feel if everything goes ok there is no reason i shouldn't hit mid 7's (7:20 - 7:40 range. I have put alot of time into my run this year and over the holiday.
swim, if i can start out strong and not get into a traffic jam and into some smooth water i can swim great. bike just keep it smart with the hills (really not worried about) and if windy in the flats don't try to push too hard of a gear.
---
if it is really windy i'll add 5-7 minutes to my bike time

Nice looking race plans.

I'll be really happy with 5:30.  My stretch goal is 5:15.  I'll get to my stretch goal mainly by running better than I think I can.  Really all depends on the heat and wind.  Last year I made a mental mistake and it cost me on the run.  I feel better prepared this year.

Swim - :32
T1- :04
Bike: 2:45
T2 - :04
Run - 2:05

My full race plan is attached to this post.

Well, here I go with mine. This is fun stuff...

Swim = :44
T1 = :03
Bike = 2:48
T2 = :02
Run = 1:55
Total = 5:32

If I'm anywhere around that time, I'll be VERY pleased.

I've got a lot to make up on that slow swim time. I hate putting it down, but it's conservative. That's what I swam at IronStar, and I've improved since then, so I've got a good chance to beat it.

(BTW, liked the detailed race plan.)

Just a reminder that your training pays off in more than one way...A guy died during the swim of a sprint I did yesterday. I was in front of the second swim wave when someone went into distress in the group in front. He got some assistance from the life guards but turns out the guy did not make it. Scary ****.

I did not realize the severity until after the race was over...

That is so sad.  At IMFL last year, there was a guy that died during the swim.  I didn't see it.  But, my wife did.  She saw the jet ski coming in towing a raft with the guy and medics on him doing CPR.  Scary stuff.
