Member 50![]() ![]() Ballantyne | Subject: RE: tcovert's Group - CLOSEDWell, the weather has turned to rain just enough to get me out of the fields. Which means I have plenty else to catch up on. But I'm getting some training back in the schedule as well. I've got some errands to do and a swim today, but hopefully I'll be able to catch up with the group in the discussion forum. I did see a new bike though. Shiny relflectors! Joe |

Member 269![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Minneapolis, MN | Subject: RE: tcovert's Group - CLOSEDSo had to cancel the backpacking trip because my husband's knee was really bothering him. Oh well, guess that happens when you have two active people married to each other! Anyways, I took full advantage of being home for a 3 day weekend and got lots of good training in. I even managed to get in the cold water for a OWS today. At the beginning I was sort of panicking because the water was so cold when I put my face in it felt like my breath was being taken away. I swam around for a little just breaststroke with my face up and out of the water. Once that felt comfortable I did a little bit of freestyle and I worked on some sighting too. I can't really say I got a "workout" but I definitely felt more comfortable at the end. If the weather is good this week I might go back and get in one more time before Sunday's race. One question - some water gets in your wet suit right? I feel like I have the right size suit but my tri shorts and top were definitely soaked underneath the wet suit when I got out. Is this normal? Well I'm off to see some friends and then bbqing. Hope everyone had a nice weekend! Sarah |

Elite 3072![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() san francisco | Subject: RE: tcovert's Group - CLOSEDGreat job getting into the OW Sarah! Yes, water does get into the suit. In fact, one tip that many have given me is to purposely let some water into your suit as you are getting acclimated to the cold water. It will warm up really fast because of your own body temperature. Then put your face in and let your body adjust. Listen to me, the OW expert! Take care and enjoy the rest of the weekend! |

Yes, water does get into the suit. In fact, one tip that many have given me is to purposely let some water into your suit as you are getting acclimated to the cold water. It will warm up really fast because of your own body temperature. Then put your face in and let your body adjust. Yup, all true. (Although sometimes I wish it would warm up just a tad quicker...) One thing to look out for, though, is too loose a fit at the neck: It should be quite snug and you don't want to feel like there's water _flowing_ into the neck of the suit. That creates tremendous drag and really reduces the effectiveness of the suit. In general, water should basically seep into the suit as you get in and start to move around. In addition to warming up and helping create an insulating barrier, the water also increases the mobility of the suit on your body as you swim. It can be helpful to do any adjustments to the positioning of the suit on you (like around your shoulders) in the water before the race--easier to get the suit to where it wants to be if you get in the water after you've got it on and then do some warmup strokes and make any last minute adjustments then. Champion 5782![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Northridge, California | Subject: RE: tcovert's Group - CLOSEDHappy For my part, this weekend was the 8-weeks-out mark for my half-iron and it felt like a pretty important point in training for that race. I'd planned a 2500 pool workout, a run of 8-to-10 miles and a 46 mile ride. Got the swim done (and included a 2200 yd continuous segment) and followed it up with a 10 mile run at half-marathon race pace. Bike ride turned out to be longer than I thought and was heading for 49 miles...so I took a short detour just to put it over 50. So I got two milestones this weekend--first continuous swim longer than the HIM swim distance (which is 2112 yds) and first 50 mile bike ride. So I'm actually a little bit ahead of schedule--I didn't plan to hit 50 miles until June 8. Next weekend, Liz and I are running a small local 5K that we've done the last two years and we both had big training weekends, so this will be another rest week before a final three week build that ends one week before our Oly the end of June and four weeks before Vineman: Monday (done)-- Active recovery day: Went out with Liz for her short interval workout (2 x 1 mile and 1/4 mile cool down). We spent the rest of the day at Disneyland, so a lot of walking. Today -- Bike commute, 12 miles Wed -- Run 5 miles Thur -- Bike commute, 12 miles Fri -- Run 4 miles Sat -- Swim 2100, bike 25 miles Sun -- 5K race What's everybody got in mind for this week? |

Veteran 168![]() ![]() ![]() Washington , MO | Subject: RE: tcovert's Group - CLOSED Hmmm, I just remembered i've got a 5k fun run at the St. Louis Zoo this sunday as well. Nothing real competetive since its a very crowded race but it's fun. My oldest daughter does the 1mile kid race while my wife and youngest daughter do the 1mile walk. Good times, and we spend the rest of the afternoon at the zoo. peace. |

Member 50![]() ![]() Ballantyne | Subject: RE: tcovert's Group - CLOSEDI think I'm caught up on reading the group's posts. And here's what I've got Todd - great job on the Bay to Breakers! Did you get to do the kilted mile? Melissa- Good luck on your tri this weekend. It sounds like a really cool place for a race. It also sounds like you impressed your training group. Go get em!! Carmen - Hope you're back to full strength. How was the OWS? I've haven't done one yet so I'm really curious to learn all I can. Kim - Great report on your tri. I know it didn't go as planned, but it sounds like it ended up pretty good. I've learned alot from your report. I'm sure I would have repeated the OWS (and still might!) Landon - Nice bike!! I too have new bike envy and want to get one. Sarah - Sorry about the hike. I was at Gooseberry Falls and the lighthouse (can't remember the park name). It's beautiful. I like hearing about the OWS. I'm afraid it might my hardest part. Good luck on your tri. Rip it up! John - Man, the zoo sounds like a really good time. Thanks for the inspire comments! I know there are more things I forgot, so I'll just let you all know I"m having a good time trying to catch up to the rest of the group in my training. I'll probably be skipping the Copper Creek Tri. It was an outside shot to be ready by then, but I'm definately in for the Croixathlon. Maybe I'll even pick one up later in the year. I'll be on Ragbrai also. Anyone else going? |

Did you get to do the kilted mile? No...actually I forgot about the fact that the Games moved back to its old venue this year and doesn't have the course they were able to run the footrace on the last couple years. So no "Kilted Mile" (and, since I swam 2500 yds and ran 10 miles in the morning, I wouldn't have turned in much of a time if they'd had it). |

Member 269![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Minneapolis, MN | Subject: RE: tcovert's Group - CLOSEDQuick question - in the transition from swim to bike do people usually put biking gloves on? I guess the bike is only 24 miles, so I don't need them and I am not sure I could get them on my wet/cold hands. Just curious what people typically do.... |
