I've been tapering for an HIM next week and it's making me crazy! But it will be nice to race, especially so early in the season. Then it's all focused on MOO from there!

Yes! One week from today, crazy! It should be a good way to kick off the season.

Okay, so I am not sure why I am bringing this up now, but my mind is already thinking about race week.  I noticed on the schedule that massage is open most days up to the race and then the day of the race in the afternoon.  For those of you who have done this, what is this all about?  Do you preregister?   What kind of massages are these?  Do people recommend them?  Any details would be appreciated so I can move on to my next IM question in my mind.

I have the Spinervals IMWI training video & am kind of familiar with the bike course. Can anyone tell me what to expect this year on the run course? (flat/hilly/rolling/shady/paved etc.)

Thanks

I had a massage on Thursday and had an HIM yesterday. I realize it's half the distance so maybe not as relevant, but I'm thankful I had the massage. I had a shoulder injury issue and had the therapist focus there, but not do anything aggressive. I think most pre-race massages are light and meant to increase circulation and relax the muscles. My coach recommended one before and one after. I'm likely going to do the same for IMWI. I would recommend experimenting a bit with massage first to see how it affects you as it can make you feel a bit sluggish, but that's usually when it's deep tissue.

I just got word that I am in for this years race!!! I am psyched to be coming back to Madison, it was my first IM in 2007 and the course owes me a good run! The people in Madison make this race one of the if not THE best IM in the world. I was blown away by how many spectators are lining the course. Riding up the hills through the crowds feels like you are in the Tour de France with fans running next to you and crowds cheering, you almost forget you are climbing. (Until the second time around anyway. )

Stay healthy everyone and train smart!! I look forward to meeting a whole bunch of BTers out there.

Kristin (with an "i" - Congrats on a great race last weekend!! You will love IMMOO!!!

Fairly flat with a couple of little quick, steep ascents (no biggie really), then there's Observatory Hill that worth noting for a quarter mile around mile 4-1/2 or so, and you will do that twice since it's an "out and back" course that you do twice.  Mostly paved on the roads.  There is an extremely well-paved trail, very flat, along the Lake by the campus.  If you are out after dusk, there are some generated lights they have out.

Recommendation for anyone running after dusk - WEAR reflective clothing, or strips, or those cyalume light sticks.

Weather is totally unpredictable, so "shady" may not matter here unless it's the heat wave year, then you'll have some shade here or there, but not much.

From my Tri Club email group this week (just in case anyone is planning on riding the course):

Hi. For those who don't know yet, the bridge at the bottom of Shady
Oak Lane is gone-for the next month. You can carry and stumble through
the ditch (I did) but long term, plan on using Timber Lane or Wood
Lane to get back to Verona.  GG

To stay on Timber, you would go straight instead of turning left on Midtown Road (the last of the three sisters).  Not sure about where Wood Lane is.

Two options to get around the bridge out on Shady Oak:

1 - Stay on Timber instead of turning left on Midtown Rd.  Take Timber all the way to PD.  Turn left on PD/Pond Rd and then right on N Nine Mound Rd (back on the course once you pass Shady Oak) to get back to Verona.

2 - Take Timber and turn left on Midtown (normal course).  Take Midtown to Woods Rd.  Stay on Woods to PD.  Turn right on PD and then left on N Nine Mound Rd to get back to Verona.

Hey Bob, I'm coming out in June for HHH and am trying to get some folks together for a ride that Wednesday, June 24. I'm not sure if a weekday works for you but so far you'll have Amy Jo and I for pace booty!

I'll likely ride it again that Saturday as well (27th).

Extended forcast is 55 degrees in the morning, water temp of 72, sunny and clear the entire day with a high temp of 75. No wind to speak of!

Peeps that are up there this weekend should know that the Madison marathon and half marathon are going on.  I havent analyzed if there is overlap with the course, but might be worth mentioning due to that and cuz there is an opportunity to race that day if folks want to.  My wife is in for the half and I just might consider it, or maybe riding the course on that Sat depending on our schedule with the fam.
