I don't have experience with it, but just saw that it's just a corticosteroid (www.epocrates.com).

Hello all...how about us posting our own tricks of the trade for kicks and giggles???

 Me:

- A little cornstarch in the cycling shorts = helluva lot less irritation (my Dr recommended it and it works really well).

- My favorite recovery drink = a smoothie.  One cup milk (I use omega 3 fortified soymilk), 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup (sometimes I like a little more =) ), 3 tablespoons peanut butter and 1 FROZEN ripe banana (I usually buy a bunch and wait 4 or 5 days and then freeze them).  Thow all in a blender and enjoy.  I put 2 tablespoons of wheat germ in it too.

That's interesting.  Never thought of that.  I use Gold Bond if I use anything.

I'll have to try that recipe.  I like to whip up a smoothie after a hard workout, especially when it is warmer out.  I use about 6 oz of either orange or pineapple juice, some frozen berries, half of a banana (frozen if I remember to freeze them) about a cup of low fat yogurt, a scoop of whey protien, and about a dozen ice cubes.  Sometimes I will substitute frozen peaches for the beries.

Another couple of training tips that I have picked up from others:

For trainer rides if you don't have a planned workout.  While watching TV, take the cadence to over 100 rpm during the commercials.  110 if you can do it for that long without losing form.  An alternative to this is to shift to a hard gear and do simulated standing hill climbs during the commercials.

For running outside, I have a tendancy to zone out and fall into an easier pace if I am not paying attention.  On days that I am supposed to be working the harder paces, I have a play list on my Ipod that alternates between songs with a high beat per minute and slower bpm.  Something that will push my paces up to Z3/4 or 7 min/mile for me, and then drop back into Z1/Z2,  mid to high 9 min/mile for me.

I think that one of the toughest things a new runner or cyclist has to learn is proper pacing.  For me it is especially tough on the bike, I find it to easy to fall into a social ride pace.  These 3 or 4 minute hard intervals I find easier than focusing on a watch for a prescribed time, with more than adequate recovery between intervals.

As a warning, before pushing the pace while running, you need to have a good solid base or you will risk injury.

I love smoothies, but not as a recovery drink.  My preference is cranberry juice.  High in calories and carbs.  No fat.  If you don't care for the taste add a splash of orange juice to tone it down.  If you still don't like the taste, add a shot or two of vodka.

  Calories (8oz)Carbs  Fat
Cranberry Juice  120 30g 0g
Gatorade Endurance 50 14g 0g
Powerade 57 15g 0g

The way I make smoothies (Non fat milk, banana, strawberries, Activa yogurt, whey protein) they carry about 350 calories per 8oz, 50 g carbs, and 4 g fat.  Eat a banana along with the cranberry juice and you're there, but it's much easier to prepare and transport.

Actually this time of year, nothing better and pretty good for you than hot chocolate.  Chocolate milk isn't bad either in the summer, but sometimes after a hard effort it doesn't sit so well when it is warm out!

I am generally not one to brag on my children but I have to share my daughter's accomplishments today.  She is 10 and this is her second year at competitive swimming.  At her meet today she swam a 50m free in 39.30 and a 100m free in 1:35:40.  At her first meet last year, she had a 50 free time of just about 1:00.  Its bad when your 10 year old is better at something than you are.  At least I can run and bike faster than her.....for now.

3 D1 soccer scholarships.  No thanks.  5 full ride basketball scholarships.  No thanks.  Track and field?  No thanks.  She'll go to school where her boyfriend goes.  It just doesn't matter.  All that counts is that she has fun while she swims!!

Wow, thats great.  You must be very proud of her.  I'm sure its hard to not have her take advantage of a full ride but you are right, if they aren't happy then there is no point.

Congrats! Bragging on children is always allowed.

Thanks for the concern about my knee. I went to the podiatrist Thurs and fortunately no major problem found. I do pronate moderately, so he's going to make me some orthotics and see if that helps. He's a runner, and after examining me he feels one problem may be hyperextension of my knees (the knee joint bending too far backward). I have some natural hypermobility, and he noticed that my hamstrings and ankles are tight. He has me doing some extra stretching to see if that helps.

I am also taking a sort of a step back in training. I'm incorporating more walking, now doing half walk, half run. It seems like my knee hurts less this way. Today I did 6.5 miles and had little pain afterwards. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it), my normal running speed is so slow that I can maintain almost the same speed when I half walk/half run.

Keep up the good work everyone!!

Glad to hear that is nothing serious.

Nothing wrong with taking a step back with the goal of improving in the long run.

Craig.. congrats.  You must be a proud papa!

Well this is day 2 on the prednisone and the back/leg is much better.  Still not 100% gone but i'd say it's don to 25% of what it has been the last month.  Kicking myself for waiting this long to see the dotor.  I'm not one for prescription medication but damn.. wish I had know about this stuff a while back.

He told me no running or cycling for another few weeks.  Swiming is OK however.  I'm just glad to be (aklmost) rid of the LITERAL pain in the butt...

Another Monday folks and we are a little more than halfway through January!

How is everyone's month going so far?  Better than expected?

I know injury and illness has slowed a couple of us down, but that happens.

Sounds like we're getting the needed treatments for our injuries and are on the mend. Our weather for the Houston marathon and half exceeded expectations. A 53 degree dry 7am start greeted 18,000 runners. Congrats to the Houston Marathon committee and the thousands of volunteers that made the marathon a huge success. As a participant I really appreciate how well organized and smooth running everything was. Of course I'm biased but have participated in enough of these events to know a well "run" event. Course records for men and women's marathon. I had a great half marathon with a 2' PR not planned for. I just ran steady and steadily picked up pace last 3 1/2 miles. I thank my Garmin to keep the first mile slower and run a steady pace. A rest day today and back to training. Ten yards from finish I heard the announcer say "and here comes the first female finisher for marathon". I crossed the line just in time to look back and see her finish. Exciting stuff!! and this was her first marathon!

You are right, a well run event sure makes the experience more enjoyable!

Should be a good Superbowl, dynamic offense against a great defense.  Arizona has surprised me, they look very good.

They certainly have been a surprise!  I have bet against them every week since the playoffs started.  Yesterday was the first time this season that I sat and watched an entire game.  Larry Fitzgerald is impressive!

I've been trying to convince the wife to get a couple of tickets on e-bay and go to the game.  I think I have a better chance of winning IMLP this summer!

Nice job Wayne!

I just got done watching the inauguration during a little ride on the trainer.  So, I had had left shoulder pain (in the front) since the end of December.  I was certain that it was my swimming so I adjusted my stroke which helped a little.  But, today it dawned on me that it might be the bike.  I had adjusted the seat thinking the slant would make my derrier more comfy but the extra body weight on my shoulders hurts WAY worse then any problems I've had from the seat.  I'm back to a level seat and have my fingers crossed that this helps because MAN it was bad today.  Getting in the water tonight just for yardage.  Nothing strenuous.
