I forgot to add that I used my Garmin for the first time. I loved it (although I had my sleeves over my hands because it was so cold so then I had to dig out my wrist to check it, ha). I have trouble keeping my pace so I'd be shocked when my pace would go from 10:30 mile to 11 or even 12 when I checked and then I'd have to pick it up. (but I have an excuse because there was snow/ice/mud). Anyways, I think it will really help me. I forgot to check my heart rate . . . I think it's saved, have to figure that out next.

Trudee - 2009-01-15 2:50 PM Kim - hilarious on the flat tires!!!! I can totally relate, and it's right when you really want to workout and then it takes all the workout time. Yesterday I was dreading the treadmill so I went for a run outside, 41 degrees with some wind, it was freezing, but I was proud of myself for doing it. Today I'm going to a Tri workshop at a local YMCA, it was $10 so I'm hoping I get inspired and a little guidance, figured it can't hurt (got a ride for my son to his hockey practice so I could go, "A" for effort) The Y also has a mini indoor tri on Apr 4 so I'm considering that too. Still have my goal to go to Master's swim on Sunday.

Trudee~Ummmm freezing? It's -7,wind chill between 25-38 below zero here! you are having a heat wave! Hope the workshop was good.

Got a new pump for the bike....will try it in a minute!

Kim - hilarious on the "freezing". I am definitely a fair weather runner, have to learn how to toughen up

My tri workshop at the Y was awesome. It's four sessions every two weeks, with a mini tri at the end and everyone is assigned volunteer coaches and there is a free swim clinic. I'm motivated

Hey everyone!

Sherm~ I finally did my test on the TM...did I mention I really do not like the TM??? Toughed out 25 min..hope that's enough. did 2.9 miles avg HR 166 max 177. I set it at 6.8 but then moved it up to 7.0 then up to 7.3 prob could have went faster but wasn't sure....I don't use the Tm and didn't know what I could do. I feel like a caged animal...I would never make it as a hamster! Hope that is enough info for you.

I am having the bike tire issues this week also! Knew I needed air on Mon but rode anyhow and asked hubby if he could fill them(using the compressor) he forgot so on Wed.  I thought I can do this how hard can it be...... well he doesn't have the right size connector..I ended up letting all the air outFrown When he got home I told him what I did and he went to put the air in but couldn't get the adapter thing to work right...so off the the lbs to get the right one..both stores closed. headed to walmart to see if they had anything( I really need to ride!) well they had a floor stand that has the pressure gauge that goes to 120psi so we buy it and bring it home. I went to put it on the stem and the whole clip broke! no air in tires...-11 right now...do I head out the the lbs and get the right one? I have to work at 1:30 think I will leave early and stop then ride tonight.

As for the peddles..I can't imagine going back! I love my clip less. It does take some getting used to(I used mine in spin when I first got them) but now it is second nature.

My races... My first tri of the season will be J-hawk early bird(this was my first tri ever) April 26th. Indoor swim the rest outside. Great race...well organized. I would like to do the Kenosha 1/2 on May 2nd(never ran that far before) maybe the Green Bay tri on June 7th, tri-ing for children oly(will be my first)July 26th, Oshkosh oly Aug 9th and end my season with J-hawk late bird Sept 27th. Probably throw in a few local 5ks and maybe a 10k. this is a rough outline...we will see!

Sorry I missed this Kim, I will get on training peaks later tonight and get those zones for you.

Common, 41 degrees is freezinSurprised

I plan to run later (unless I bike instead) and we are looking at 4 degrees with a minus 10 wind chill

Someday i want to be able to say 41 in January is freezin

Slacked off this week. You can read my logs. I got a bike in today but as you can see from my log I'm not totally sure on the time. I put in 1 hour 50 minutes though because that's about right.

Trudee - 2009-01-13 9:57 AM Tammy - yippee for officially registering, I did mine last week and I still get scared when I think about it. Jill - I updated my log I was slacking. 5 inches of snow here so stuck on a trainer/treadmill, argh. I received my Garmin 305 (Christmas present from my dad). Now I have to figure out how it works. I feel so clueless about my training. When I'm on a trainer do I just focus on keeping my cadence up? Am I supposed to shift?

So Trudee and Tammy are in and registered for their first races of the season. When will be everyone elses first race?

I am doing a few running races with the first one maybe being mid march. My first tri isn't until June

Im supposed to run 1/2 mary on April 11th but not sure I will be ready for it.  My first tri is on June 6th

Which half are you looking at?

Sherm, sorry i missed this.  I am planning on the new Illinois Marathon and 1/2 Marathon in Champaign IL where I live.

Kim, I got those zones for you finally.

There are a few methods to use but the one I chose is probably the simplest and easy to follow. Let me know if you want a more detailed one like that has 7 zones vs 5 (3 of them are top end zones)

Lactate Threshold (pace you held during the test) 166

zone 1- active recovery  0-113

zone 2- aerobic capicity   114-138

zone 3- tempo   139-156

zone 4- threshold  157-174

zone 5- vo2max  175-

Hope this helps let me know if you have any other questions

I went to the gym yesterday to do an hour run and a light swim (just because it was open and I could). Some how I decided to do the swim first. Because of the holiday on Monday the gym did not open until 2PM. I got there right when they opened. There was a pool party just getting started but there was one lane marker still in place. I had it mostly to myself - there was a guy rehabing his knee and kind of walking around in the lane. Nice guy, he sucked to the side every time I swam by.

It was recommended that I start wearing my swim jammers again. That the regular trunks were acting like drag shorts and that I did not need the resistance. So I wore the jammers for the first time in months - Still Tight!

I felt fast in the water. I swam 250 yards (5 laps) in 4:00. 48 second average for 50 yards is fast for me. I was not going all out or anything - just kind of swimming. This is encouraging. Everything was clicking good in the water and the water was rough with the pool party. The diving board is near the lane that I was swimming in - there was a chop in the water.

I ended up swimming 4000 yards (80 laps). This is the furthest that I have ever swam in the pool (and I think ever - anywhere). My times are noted below (the first 8:42 set was because of a child in the lane - the second was because I was getting tired):

RI - 30 seconds rest after each set

250 yards - 4:00 (50 yard average 48.0 seconds)
250 yards - 4:06 (50 yard average 49.2 seconds)
500 yards - 8:18 (50 yard average 49.8 seconds)
500 yards - 8:22 (50 yard average 50.2 seconds)
500 yards - 8:23 (50 yard average 50.3 seconds)
500 yards - 8:26 (50 yard average 50.4 seconds)
500 yards - 8:42 (50 yard average 52.2 seconds)
500 yards - 8:29 (50 yard average 50.9 seconds)
500 yards - 8:42 (50 yard average 52.2 seconds)

Unfortunately the run did not go well. I hopped on the treadmill for the hour run and I just was not feeling it. My stomach hurt - from water and hunger. I only ran a mile (low 8 minutes) and called it a session.

I'm off for that run this morning instead.

11 mile run in 1:32:07 (8:37 min / mile pace - I did stop and talk with someone briefly) - My volume has been high but I feel slow. I have a 30 minute run time trial on Tuesday.

Working the plan in hopes for some speed in the spring.

Wow man, what a swim. Pounding out that kind of yardage now, you are going to dominate come spring. I know the feeling about the run after. Whenever I swim at the pool, I always end up drinking more of it than i should and have issues after.

24 min run, no walking yesterday for me, balmy 54 degrees Today, I went to the Master's swim class this morning and it was great. I feel like I can swim 100 times easier all ready. Two coaches on deck both do tri's a dedicated coach for the 1st 3 beginner lanes, I was in the slowest lane. I have to concentrate to keep my head down, chin a little tucked, looking at bottom of pool. I also have to concentrate breathing so I don't lift my head up. Coach said keep one side of goggles in water and that made a huge difference.

Okay gang, we have a new week upon us and its time to get serious.

First Challenge we will have. For the next week post a goal. It can be anything tri or exercise or eating related. Make a goal and say it out loud so we can hold each other accountable and shoot for hitting one small goal on our way to hitting larger goals as the season goes on.

I'll start. I want to log in at least 10 hours of training next week. For me i need to start upping my mileage across the board and start getting in some more hours.

So what will it be everyone?

Thanks for the challenge. I need it. I've been slacking a bit with the stress. This is week 3 of my 20 week program. This is what it is supposed to be:

29-Swim & 58-Bike
Off
48-Swim
29-Run
97-Bike
Off
48-Run
TOTAL 5h 9m

I will do it. No excuses.

I also need to get the sugar under control again. It's an ongoing battle with me. I eat like crap when I'm under stress. The next two weeks will probably still be stressful. It's hard to avoid the candy dishes at the office. I'll keep you guys in mind and know that I'll have to confess if I have some. Any other suggestions?

I should have worked this weekend but decided to take some me time. Yesterday was driving in the car trying to find a route for the bike. We have roads up here that on mapquest say they go through but they don't. I didn't find a way over but the road I was trying to avoid wasn't too bad so I decided I'll just deal with it.

Today I mapped out on gmap the two golf courses near me and found them to be just over 3 miles each for each 9 hole course. The bike riding through the subdivision is great too. The roads are wide and the speed limit is limited. I want to plan a 24 mile ride through there.

Today I got to work in the garden. So none of the 3 sports but I did pick and hoe so that was strenous work and I enjoy it.

Thanks! I love goals, challenges and accountability. I used to lose weight by the 80/20 rule - if I ate right 80 % of the time I could eat whatever I wanted 20 % of the time. As I have gotten a little older it does not seem to work as well. So this month I started a new resolution and I am following a variation of the the 80/20 - the NO-S DIET ( http://www.nosdiet.com). No sweets, no seconds and no snacks (except sometimes on days that start with S)- easy peasy - right. I have not had a week yet where I followed it to a T. That will be this week. That is my challenage - my goal for the week!

From my blog ( http://13resolutions.blogspot.com/)-

Yesterday was a true S-Day. Homemade tollhouse cookies late last night. I really wanted them and had all of the ingredients in house. I ate the whole half batch in about an hour. My weight was down 1 pound this morning only because of the long run (11 miles) and long bike ride (42 miles) that I did yesterday afternoon.

Today is a holiday but I am going to try my best to treat this as a NON S-day. It is easier for me to keep to schedule while at work (limited food selection) but I will be diligent today.

Hey everyone! Sherm thanks for the #'s now how do I use them? For the bike I follow Jorge's plan for what zone to ride(not that I truly follow...not disciplined enough to stay low) So is there a rule of thumb? I usually just go out and run.

James~ Nice miles ya got in there.

Trudee~way to stick with it!

As for my goals~ Today will be week 10 w/o 1 of jorge's bike plan, this has been the most consistent I have ever been. I haven't looked at it yet but usually the first one is brutal! Swim after my water class and if it gets to 15(supposed to get to 20!) I will take the dog for a run.

Tues~ run 4 mil or more. and swim with tri stroke

Wed~ bike #2 and swim after water class.

Thurs~run

Fri~bike and run
