i lucked out with buying a wetsuit.  i did some research (http://swimming.about.com/od/triathlon/a/buy_a_wetsuit.htm)  and decided to go mid-price and with sleeves.   then my partner saw that rei had a member sale (20% off one item) and bought me a zoot fusion.  it's a $300 suit that cost her $240 and i'm a lucky girl.  if it doesn't fit i'll exchange it for one that does.

obviously, i'm a good partner.  now i just have to learn how to be a better swimmer Laughing

Hi All!  Sorry I have been MIA- was at a meeting, then preparing for another meeting (leaving today), and will finally catch my breath on Thursday.

I am up for the challenge BTW- need to get my a$$ in gear.

I have great news though!  I was finally accepted into the master's swimming group I've wanted to get into.  I think I finally pestered them enough they figured I be less painful at the pool .  It's Tues/Thurs nights- I won't make both every week (am out of town tomorrow), but it will be MUCH better than what I'm currently doing (monthly??).

If anyone wants to trek to Seneca Lake in late June or July we can do an OWS at my place- it's COLD though.  I wear a wetsuit all year there.  I have a Promotion I got online-I've been very happy with it, it was quite reasonably priced, and they helped me figure out the right size.

I'll check in when I get back from Boston- I'm presenting my research findings on kids, antioxidant levels, and secondhand tobacco smoke (again).  These are potential funders so I have to make my case for further research.

YEAH!  Having scheduled pool swims will keep you more motivated!

Good luck on your presentation!

Since it's not my "A" race, I don't really plan to taper at all.  Just skipping my Saturday workout since the race is on Sunday.  If it's your "A" race, I would definitely taper though!

jford2309 - 2009-05-11 9:01 AM

One more OWS tomorrow morning, then I am done until Sunday. Time to taper!

i really don't know if I do the taper thing right or not, but I plan on replacing any runs with walks with the kids and work on hydrating myself starting Thursday all to get ready for Sunday!

Looks like a bunch of us have races this Sunday.  I have a second sprint to help me prepare for my race in June.

Good luck and have fun everyone!

I just completed my first tri of the 09 season on Sun.  It was my first ever super/mini-sprint.  It was nice and short and a good way to start the season.  I was a little disappointed in the bike, but overall very happy and ready to get faster!

Congrats everyone who had races this weekend!  I am getting a bit of an itch for it myself, maybe I'll find a 5k or something.

I didn't get my two swims in due to a bit of a bender on Saturday night, but did get out on the trails for the most part of Sunday instead.

Generally, taper = volume down, intensity & recovery up.

Personally, in high school our coach was excellent at having us drop yardage, but then over 2 weeks we'd all lose our zip because the intensity was not to be found.  In college we'd go from 5,000 yards/day to maybe 2,000, but they were FAST yards with 1-2 minutes of recovery.

Good luck with your taper!  Get on the bike and spin a little, get in the water and try some 25-100 yard sprints, etc. =)

Is there wine tasting involved with the OWS???

p.s. I'm jealous you are in Boston. I went to college in Salem and we'd hit Beantown quite often. It's my FAVORITE city!  My husband proposed to me while ice skating on Frog Pond. =)

Absolutely- it's the perfect recovery drink with all the antioxidants

I actually grew up outside Boston, so it's fun to come back.  It's a great city- too bad the academic medical community eats their young!

Hey folks!  I'm just starting to catch up on all the great training you've been putting in.  Would some of you mind dropping in on Jessica (Jae.Miles) and send a few inspires?  She's really bogged down with thesis writing and I'm sure she could use some pep talks!

Let's talk about drafting on the swim...

I can't do it. I have been working on trying to draft and can't seem to get ahold of it. Either I am not swimming straight or the draftor isn't. With all the kick, bubbles, waves and choppiness (sp?) I wonder if it is even worth the effort???

James, I love drafting and try it any chance I can get.  But I have come to a conclusion...drafting is really difficult and not really worth it to me on shorter races (anything under 500m).  Things are too crowded and the bumping, etc, is too much to make it worth it.  I used it to perfection on a 800m race last year.  I just cruised behind this one guy for about half the race and I swam my best OW time ever (and by a lot too!).  Tough thing for me is finding the right person to follow.

And Stanley, I learned a lot of little things at my race this weekend.  One was the drafting I just talked about.  This was a short 300m swim and drafting just wasn't going to work.  I finally got outside everyone after the turn around and it was smooth sailing.  I also learned (after several soaking wet socks and blisters last year), that I am no longer going to put on socks before the bike, and just bike sockless.  It was much nicer not hoping into my run shoes with socks already soaked.  I always ended up with blisters like that.  I found I can put them on after the bike and not have any problems.  I also learned I need a new tri top as my red/whi/blk one is too similar to a lot of other peoples and my wife couldn't tell me apart from the others!

I am leaning that way myself. I am not sure it is worth it. For me, I would rather have a constant swim at my pace and feel good out of the water rather than trying to keep up r stay close to someone I do not know.

I'm not usually a drafter, but I will try for my HIM in July.  Typically, I can't find the right person to draft off and don't bother looking for anyone to draft off of in the shorter races.  My experience has been that I've been in the front of the pack because swimming is my strength.  I say, if you can find someone to do the hard work for you, go for it!
