ultrahip_00 - 2009-06-05 1:16 PM the timing is up to you. if you show up 30 mins before start time, you will most likely have to cram your bike in and won't have a lot of options for location.  if you show up 2 hrs before start - you can probably get whatever spot you want.  i usually show up atleast 1 hr to 1.5 hrs before a race so i have time to get my packet, set up my transition area, warm up, get nervous, etc etc.

This is one of my pet peeves, I always get to the race early and set up in my little space, only to come back from the porta potty or body marking and have last minute people show up and cram their stuff in. I have been fortunate to not have any spokes broken, last race someone got chain grease all over my wetsuit.

yeah, it is frustrating, and inevitably, there is never enough space for racking.  i try to be very courteous of other people's stuff and not touch it if i can help it.  it really doesn't take much space to lay your stuff out, but some people take up a ton of room.

This is good information.  I don't know what to expect as the set up procedure in my race and apparently, we won't get our race packets until 1 week before race time.  Good thing is that I could ride my bike to the race.  If I go a couple hours ahead, would that be foolish?  It's a steep downhill and then flat - total distance about 5k.  What do you guys think?

Sorry about the rant , it helps me getting there early, I get my setup out of the way, if something goes wrong I have time to fix or get help. I can take my time meeting others, checking out the transition area, bike in,out, run out, etc. Get my marking and relax. Some things I have forgotten at or during races: apply body glide for my wetsuit, sunscreen, pump tires, check if brakes are rubbing rims, run shoe laces untied, damp rag to wipe feet or face, fill water bottles, and I'm sure there are others Ive forgotten!

Doing bike maintenance this weekend, putting a new computer on, changing my chain, lube all my derailers and cables, change out my bar tape, adjust all cables. Then I will take it to the bike shop and have my wheels trued and have my bottom bracket stripped, cleaned, lubed. I want to get new wheels, might have to wait until Christmas. It will reduce my bike weight to 15.5lbs and have more stiffness for cornering and hills. I am leaning twards WW 30's & flit Con-a.

hahaha Stuart.  Now I really feel stupid about bikes!  And here I was feeling proud to have shaved 5 mins today off last week's time on the 20k...  Do I need to do all of this stuff to my bike before the first tri?  I just got new tires and tubes and lubed my chain, etc., but I don't even know what the rest of that stuff is.

Here's a question: do any of you take time to stretch at T2?  I jumped off my bike today and attempted to run for a couple of minutes.  Ouch.  It's a weird feeling and I had tightness in my lower back and legs.  How long after the start of the run does the bike feeling go away?  I'm going to have to practice this more than the transitions!

Laura - your bike will be fine before the race - just make sure the basics work fine (pump up the tires, brakes work, shifters all work etc).  I'm sure that Stuart has thousands of miles on his bike and is just doing the maintenance on it to keep it running well.

As far as stretching in T2 - i don't/wouldn't do it. . just because it would cost me time   however, if you are very sore coming off the bike, you can stretch and i'm sure you wouldn't be the first to do so in T2.  It takes some time and practice to get the feeling down for doing Bricks - i think your legs will always feel heavy for the first mile or two until your legs get the feeling for running.

Thanks Mike. What do you mean "doing Bricks"?  I feel like I'm learning a new language for this sport.

And I seem to be one of the more chatty people here.  Sorry guys.  I know you have a life too. I am just so ENTHUSIASTIC about triathlon!  Yesterday, I rode the race route in the correct direction (last week I did the reverse).  It has more incline than expected, and I had a fierce headwind for most of the ride, but I was still positive about my time.  Hate to ask this since I'm only hoping to "finish" the race, but how fast do you do 20k on the bike?  Assume a flat course.

The competitive dragon is creeping out...

Laura I think you make some very relevant posts for this group.  Please don't feel that you are being "chatty."

Anyways, "brick" or "brick days" are where you do two events back-to-back for training.  So, for example, you go on your bike ride and transition straight into your run.

I know I can do 20 miles on my mountain bike in roughly an hour.  So, I would expected to see time faster than that on a rode or tri bike! I'm sure Mike or Stuart can give you a more accurate time.

Just got a Cyclops Fluid 2 trainer off Craigslist!  I'm pretty excited about being able to log some extra hours from home now.  Got a question though, are you guys keeping track of your mileage while on the trainer or simply time.  If tracking mileage, how are you doing it?  Obviously, my GPS is not going to work !  I was thinking about buying a cateye and mounting the the rear or, not worrying about it at all, and simply doing hr intervals with specific times.

tim- i have a cateye strada computer that does cadence, miles, time etc - it is connected to my back wheel. i find that miles on the trainer are sort of irrelevant. . i can always avg 22+ on the trainer. . i never average that on the road (there is no way to ride a flat ride here either).  however, for tracking purposes, a bike computer is cheap and easy (mine was $35).

Laura - as far as time for a 20k course - it totally depends on the course! for me, in races, i can typically average around 21 mph. . maybe a little over - which would put me around 35ish minutes?  however, if it is hilly, it obviously takes longer.  most of my training rides, i average 18-18.5 miles/hr, but all my rides have atleast 1200 feet of vertical gain (read, uphill).

Hi Folks!!!!

I PR'd my race yesterday. Got to be the fastest ever for me! Especially on the swim and bike.  The run only by a few minutes but I am just glowing today at the fact that FINALLY I see improvement!

Just thought I'd share

Way to go, Lynne!  Do tell...what was the race?  The distance?  Want to share your times?  As I'm coming up to my first tri, I'm super interested!

Mike - My race will have a nearly flat circuit and it's just 10 minutes from where I live, so I can do all of my training there.  If you're interested, here's a link to the profile of the course (http://www.reygrafik.ch/htm/streckenplaene/uster_uebersicht.htm).  The hills are outlined only for the 40 km, but the 20k route is around the lake and only has about 50 m incline at any one spot.  Yesterday, I was riding mostly about 22-24 km/hr.  That sound pretty slow compared to your speed on hills.  But it's only my second time out on a bike in about 10 years, so I'm not complaining.

Are there drills to do on a bike or is it just a build up of endurance? (Tim - please jump in here, if you have some advice)

Moses Lake, Wa tri.  It was a sprint.  .5 mile swim (12.37)  11 mile bike, although I recorded 11.86 on my garmin.  (42.17and 5K run (37.01)  Running is my weakest event, because I am so stiff in the hips.  But going to work on that for sure.

I placed 3rd in Athena. That's 2 years in a row for me

Lynne - great job!! that race is fun

Laura - i wouldn't worry about drills and stuff at this point - if you have only been biking a few times, time in the saddle (T.I.T.S) is the best thing to do.  i would try and get out 3-4 times per week if you can, even if it is only for 45 mins or an hour.  Don't worry about pushing your pace too hard, you will get faster with time.  try to go out and ride at a moderate effort level.

I don't feel I have to maintain this stuff for my races, I could have easily had my bike shop do an overhaul. I just went over 2000 miles and know its time to do certain things. I spent over 3k for my bike and want it to perform at its best. If I dont do certain things on my bike I know it may cost more later on. The best thing you can do for your bike for now is keep your chain clean and lubed, its easy to do. Over time you will learn the other more technical things you can do to maintain and upgrade your bike.
Great job on your bike times!!!!!!

Lynne -  Thanks for sharing your times.  I can only hope to be as cool as you when I do my first sprint on 23 August!

And thanks guys for the encouragement on the bike.  One of my students has canceled class for tomorrow morning, so I'm going to take the extra block of time to run, swim and bike...maybe...

And now, we're approaching bedtime.  Will report in tomorrow.

I had my first swim in a wetsuit this weekend. It was amazing. Swimming was effortless and I felt like I was sitting really high in the water. Also, the water temperature was in the low 60's and I didnt feel a thing! My kicking and stroke was good, but finding a good breathing rythym - not so good. Im going to work hard on it and I cant wait to get back in the water.

Very cool.  I have to think about the wetsuit.  My race is in late August, but the water might still be cold.  I hoping to try a few OWS in my trisuit before race day - I think that's about the best I can do without purchasing a wetsuit.

I can have a little bit of anxiety in open water and while I was swimiming this weekend I actually felt safer with the wetsuit on. I wasnt afraid to venture from the shore because it was less effort to stay afloat. And the 2nd skin made me feel a little more secure from seaweed and such.

I can understand that.  I would have a terrible time in an ocean swim because I'm really afraid of sharks (stupid, I know, but it's a fear).  In our lakes, the worst thing might be snapping turtles or swans, but I don't think any of them will venture out with a bunch of triathletes thrashing around.

Is there really so much difference when swimming in a wetsuit that I should try one before race day?  I can rent one here for the weekend, but I was just worried about not having time to practicing getting out of it during T1.

I don't think its so much about swimming in the suit, but rather being comfortable in the open water.  The suit will provide greater bouyancy, glide, and even catch as some suits have ribbed panels on the arms.  However, if you've never worn a wetsuit, it is important to be familar with the fit, tightness, and how to remove the suit quickly.  It would be important to at least practice the transition before your race.

In my limited experience with OWS in the ocean, its going to be more important to work on using landmarks to stay on coarse, incorporating site breathing into your normal cadence, and be able to get clean breath strokes with chop and waves.
