Subject: RE: Have I lost my mind to consider a HIM?

Well, I'm home again and completely exhausted.  I have no idea what my scale is going to look like tomorrow morning.  I tried to keep it under the control and run, but travel is always an unknown for me.  Good luck ladies.  Don't forget to get on the scale!

I'm so proud of all of us for stepping up to the running challenge!  Go Team Nutso!  I too am worried about hurting myself, but i really need to step up my run if I want to seriously tackle this marathon.  I think my goal is going to be 4 runs a week, with one of the 4 must be a long or race run.  (I have two sprint tris in a row then a week off and then an OLY!

As for my speedy run time, I just used the stopwatch feature on my regular ipod nano and looked at the mileage signs posted.  I think I'm going to look into a garmin as IdealMuse suggested.  My sis has one she said I can take for a test run.  I think it would help my overall training if I went that direction.  I'm very curious about the heart rate training too.  I wonder if I am really pushing myself as hard as I should.

Joblin - Glad you got home ok!!  Keep yourself healthy.  Don't push too hard!
KiriH - Glad you are feeling better.  I get a big head cold every season.
Leah - Hang in there.  Keep up the good work with 20 week plan.  You are a star!
IdealMuse - I are inspiring me with that Ironman!!  I keep looking up all the different races.
Losta - Way to motivate everyone with the challenge.  Good idea!

WB home AZ

Just wanted to check in real quick. 201 today... Think I was 206 last week, but that was an artificially high # for some reason so even though it's -5lbs that's more like 2 weeks of weight loss so I'm right on track. Can't wait to see a 1 again in front of my # Hopefully next week!

-1 for the week.
Set for a 30 min trainer ride and 30+ min run today.

And an off-training goal finally within reach - I'm 130 pages from finishing Ulysses, which I've been reading on/off (mostly off obviously) for >5 years. The goal is to finish the bloody book this week!

Happy training all!

I remained the same weight as last week (193) and  I am very ok with that.  I didn't get as much exercise as I wanted to so I understand the stand still.

WEIGHT LOSS UPDATE:  Wow!  You gals turned it on this week.  Great job!!  IdealMuse took the lead but Losta is right on her toes.  I'll update this once I get Joblin's report.

IdealMuse = 2.89%; Losta = 2.15%; Leah = 2.04%; Kate = 1.43%; KiriH = 0.43%

I think the Halloween Run Challenge will be fun and I think it is great we are all signed up.  Can my challenge be something like "follow my 20 week plan to a T"?  I think that will work even for race and taper days since my plan calls for a 75 minute run on Sunday, October 4, and I certainly won't do the 10K in less than that.  I should be tapering on Friday and Saturday and my plan calls for a rest day on Friday, so that certainly works out, and Saturday only has a 20 minute run and I think that's doable.

Nothing causes me to lose weight faster than regular and consistent running.  Whenever I do it, I drop the pounds, so I fully expect that the October Challenge will get me very close to my goal  Maybe not all the way, but pretty close.  So, let's all run away these pesky bulges in October.

FYI, I use a Garmin 305 and I love it.  Mentally, I didn't do something when it isn't recorded on the Garmin.  I walked into town and back last week - 3/4 mile each way, so 1-1/2 miles and I didn't think I needed the Garmin.  I recorded it in my log as I really did do it, but it felt like I was cheating.  Same thing on the rare days I go to the gym.  I can't use the Garmin on the treadmill so "did I really go xxx miles?"  Silly, but that's how it is.  I figure whatever motivates me or anyone to get out and do it is a good thing.

Crossfit this morning and my training program calls for a 35 minute run tonight.  Very doable.  Swim in the morning and then I get to meet my prospective bike coach.  Keep your fingers crossed that this is something I can afford.

Happy training everyone.

I use a Garmin 310 XT running and 705 edge on the bike. I also do Nike + running. You could get a footpod that would work on a treadmill with the 305.

I have a Garmin 305 that I will be selling shortly if anyone is interested.

Losta and Leah - Thanks for the info on the garmin.  My watch had a melt down tonight.  The first time it happened.  Maybe it is a sign I need to try the garmin!  I'll try my sisters and see what I think.  I might be a taker for your garmin.

KiriH - Sounds like you are on the mend!  Glad to hear you are almost done with your book.  Happy reading.  My book club is reading "loving frank".  I need to get started.

Leah - I like your running goal.  Great way to stick to your plan.  Please report back about your bike coach.  I'm intrigued by the whole thing.  What the coach will tell you and what the coach will cost.  Good luck!

IdealMuse - Your are doing so good on your weight!  Keep up the good work.  100 pounds!  You must feel incredible!

- - - - - - - - -

I have my race on Sunday and b/c of all the traveling I've done lately, I haven't had a chance to wear my trisuit.  I put it on tonight for my run.  It isn't pretty ladies.  It is a little tight around the arms but not uncomfortable.  I just feel VERY fat in it.  I'm almost thinking of not wearing it.  Picture an apple with little arms and legs in a tri suit!  UGH!

My mom and husband said it isn't as bad as I think it is.  (but I can tell from their faces it isn't great)  It worked fine for the run but I put my normal sleeveless running shirt over it.  I'm going to wear it for a bike ride tomorrow.  If I don't wear it, I have to wear my swim suit under spandex shorts.  I'll keep you posted on what wins - efficiency or vanity.

Tomorrow I'm going to go on a bike ride.  I think I'll do a nice and easy ride since I have the race on Sunday.

AZ Sunshine-

Nobody looks good in a trisuit except the pros. I wouldn't worry as long as it feels ok.

If you want a watch-watch the Garmin 305 is not the answer. If you want a GPS/HRM then the 305 is good but only while you are working out and you need an everyday watch. I currently wear a Garmin FR60 as an everyday watch.

Best to you on your tri!

Went for a 12 mile bike ride today.  I know the bike and run portions of my race are doable for Sunday.  I am worried about the swim though.  I guess worst case scenerio, I side or back stroke.  I  need to get to the pool for one more swim before the race just so I know I can still do it!

I also decided today that I will wear the tri suit.  It is just too convenient.  I wore it on my bike ride today.  I couldn't even imagine trying to ride with my swimsuit under my spandex.  OUCH!

For the last bunches of triathlons that I have done, I work bike shorts (not even tri shorts, which I do not have) and sports bra in the swim and put a shirt on when I went on the bike and wore the same on the run.  I wore my swimsuit for my first triathlon and not since.  Bike shorts, sports bra and shirt for the whole race works, it really does.  The main thing is to be comfortable, physically and mentally.

I met my bike coach today.  He checked my bike fit and says it is pretty good.  We went over pedaling techniques - did you know that there are three?  I didn't, but now I do.  He is going to ride with me Monday night in anticipation of my tri on Sunday, October 4.  The session today and on Monday are paid by the hour - $75 per hour.  I will probably sign up for his monthly coaching, which is $275 per month, which is more than I was hoping it would be.  However, if I am serious about doing an Ironman, I am going to do everything I can to make it a success.  The $275 gets me unlimited email access to him, one telephone call per week, a workout plan, another place to upload and log my workouts which he will review and critique, and one (or more if he is doing it) group ride per week.  Obviously I wouldn't have his undivided attention during a group ride, but I am not certain I would want or need that anyway.  Just a little attention.

I will probably start in October, but won't have the personal attention part since he is starting on a six-week bike ride across the country from October 8 - November.  All of the online stuff will be available.

Anyway, there it is.

I read The Odyssey, but I don't think I ever read Ulysses.  How are you liking it?  You have persevered for five years, which suggests that you are enjoying it, but it is taking you five years, which suggests that it is not high on your enjoyment list.

I have not read Loving Frank.  My book club is reading Shadow of the Wind and I haven't started it yet either.  Our next meeting is November 1, so I have time.

Is anyone else is a book club or otherwise reading a good book?  Or reading a crummy book and want to warn us to stay away?

One more thing about the bike coach.  He thinks I ought to get a tri-bike, aero bars - the whole nine yards.  I am not quite willing to go that far just yet.  Once I get closer to the California 70.3 and my training has been going well enough where I am really and truly beginning to think I might be able to do an IM, then I will probably upgrade.  I rode a hybrid my first two years doing triathlons before I finally decided that I liked doing tris well enough to get a new bike.  But if I do get a new bike, it will be before California 70.3 in March.

Do you guys have road bikes or tri-bikes?  Do you ride aero?

Leah - OMG!  Our California 70.3 is sold out.  I don't know why that makes me so nervous!

Bike - Cool to hear about your meeting with the bike coach.  Isn't it great to have someone helping you figure things out?  Good for you!  $275 sounds expensive though.  I don't think I could shell out that type of money a month but I'm kind of cheap.  I do think it is AWESOME that you are getting help with your bike.  Right now I'm getting informal lessons from some of the guys I've been riding with.  (No one mentioned the 3 types of pedalling!)  I feel like it has helped but I have a long way to go.  The biggest thing for me so far has been better understanding how to shift.  I ride a road bike.  I bought a used Cannondale from a friend for $400.  I love it but I don't have anything to compare it too.  I call her "Babe".  ("Just keep going Babe!  Just a little farther Babe!")   My Bro-in-law just got areobars.  I don't feel ready for them yet as i am still figuring out how to do things.

TriSuit - I think your bottoms with a sports bra idea is ideal.  Unfortunately, Apple shaped ladies like me can't pull off that look.  I might be able to if I was about 30 pounds lighter.  Maybe someday.  Until then I'm going to have to keep looking for a trisuit a little more flattering.

Books - The only dud I have is the Deep end of the Ocean.  Too long and unlikable characters.  My favorites have been "KiteRunner", "A Thousand Splendid Suns", "Snowflower and the Secret Fan", and "Water for Elephants".  My book club has been going for about 4.5 years now.  I love wine book club.

IronMan - I'm so intrigued by this especially now that IdealMuse has signed up.  I am scared to death though.  In the back of my mind right now I'm considering 2010 a year for more HIMs and trying to make 2011 my Ironman year.  I am also playing with the idea of volunteering for the IMAZ and doing that in November 2010 and building off of my HIM training.  Seems kind of boring to do the routes you ride in your regular training but I can see how it could be an advantage.  I really need to convince my man.  He is VERY worried about how I will find the time to do the IM training.

Coaches: I'm cheap too I wouldn't be able to do $275 for the coach... Not that it wouldn't be totally worth it! It does sound pretty awesome and it would help I'm sure. I guess Chicago is just a really expensive place to live, so we live fairly modestly. I'm already feeling bad about the group I want to join which is $700 for 7 months.

Bike: I have a road bike a Javelin Fara. No aeros... My stomach thus far has been too "in the way" to try them yet (plus I'm a wuss) My bike is just a tiny bit too big for me so I might end up getting a different one at some point. I'm not even going to think about it until next year. I love it though it's so light! Her name is "zero"

Ironman - Far be it from me to discourage anyone but just know that nearly everyone I talked to said to do the half first before I sign up. Doesn't mean you can't do it just keep that in mind. Training as an underdog means we have to be extra strict and careful about sticking with the plan too. I think you could do it though! Especially given it's more then a year out... but maybe I'm not the best person to ask hehe.

Books - I mostly just read instructional art/craft books. I used to read a lot but not that often anymore so I don't really have a suggestion.

Kate - I just throw a shirt over my tri suit or tri top if I'm feeling uncomfortable about how I look. Trisuits are really comfortable and really that's all that should matter, but I know how you feel.

I liked Ulysses more than I anticipated - finished yesterday with a marathon reading.
The problem for me was the middle sections of the book - which were dense, boring, unreadable at times, and downright frustrating at others. I would read a couple paragraphs get so frustrated and not touch the book for months and months. His language is just magnificent though - and the first section, and last two sections were totally enjoyable and re-readable. They (bbc i think) did a 29 hour audio version which i've read is absolutely the way to "read" the book. I'm actually considering hunting a copy down and giving that a go - might make a good training companion. It's a book written to be heard I think...

LeahDD - 2009-09-24 4:25 PM I read The Odyssey, but I don't think I ever read Ulysses.  How are you liking it?  You have persevered for five years, which suggests that you are enjoying it, but it is taking you five years, which suggests that it is not high on your enjoyment list.

Bike coach sounds cool! I'm in the second week of my bike clinic. We had a tire changing class last night.

I have a road bike and a tri bike. I ride the road bike most but I plan to train more on the tri bike over the winter. It is faster, the aero position gives you a different more powerful leg position I currently can't stay in the aero position too long but I'll work on it. Even getting clip on aero bars on a road bike is worth it as having different riding positions is less tiring.

My bootcamp class is taught by a USAT Tri coach, he has a local tri team too. I'm still in the gathering process so I don't think I'm ready for one coach as I'm all over the place learning S/B/R stuff. But my running needs serious work.

I'm not much of a fiction reader. Though I am constantly reading all kinds of things, it would be absolute torture for me to read Ulysses.

I am glad we are all on the same team.  I want to have 100% participation in my marathon training program for my challenge goal.  Would I just add up the number of hours per week that it calls for and have that be my goal?  Or would I go by number of days to get out and run?  My training program is based on time, not miles.

I am working on team name suggestions.  Haven't come up with any yet, but haven't worked hard on it yet.  But will.  Isn't that what the middle of the night is for - things like that?

I am also planning on restarting my marathon training program.  The program assumes a certain training base and then progresses pretty quickly from there.  I think I am a little light on the base and so by redoing the first two weeks I think that will work better for me.  After all, it isn't like I have a specific marathon in mind at the end of twenty (or twenty-two weeks).

I need help understanding how to put up my goals too.  Right now I'm leaning toward saying my goal it to Run 4 days a week.  Is that enough for the challenge or do I need to say I want to make one of those runs a long run?

I'm not good at names.

Leah - I'm using Hal Higdon't marathon training plan right now.  I know what you mean about the base.  We started with 6 mile long runs and building from there.  Just remember, we are Running More and Eating Less!

Hi everyone,

It's weekend and I am at home First weekend in 3 weeks I will need to do some laundry and other house chores and we also really need to go to IKEA and get some stuff.

I am so thrilled this morning as the bodybugg site had been down for 2 weeks now (for countries outside the US) and this morning it finally worked again   I have been using the site being down as an excuse not to eat the way I am supposed to eat and therefor gained 4lbs in the last 2 weeks (I am up to 189.4) but today is a fresh start and I want to do really good this week as we are going to Barcelona on Wednesday for a week for my husbands 2nd Ironman (which will be Oct 4th). That week will be tough again and I need all the motivation and willpower that I can get until then.

Then it's only 3 weeks after that until we leave for our "summer vacation" which will be 10 days in Florida followed by a 2 weeks cruise. I wanted to get down to below 80kg (175.8lbs) until then but now I am not sure I can do this anymore. That would be 13 lbs in 4 weeks....I am not a fast looser!!

I have started my Half-Marathon running plan this week and so far it is going good except that my piriformis is still giving me trouble but I am trying to ignore it. I will run a 5K race tomorrow and run from home to the start and back again to get my "long" run.

I also finally unpacked my bike yesterday (it was still in the box from our last TRI in Germany) and biked. It was good to be biking again.

Very cool that we are all in the same team for the Run Challenge. I need to come up with a goal....I just need to keep it realistic in case my back gives up on me...

Regarding the Garmin 305. I LOVE IT!!! I have been using it for over 2 years now and could not imagine running or biking without it. I love numbers and I need to have those numbers

LEAH, I agree on the running. I loose best when I run a lot and thats why I also really look forward to the challenge.... I have a roadbike. I hated it at first but now I love it. I am biking aero all the time and love it. It makes such a huge difference and I am also biking much faster in aero. I need to "deserve" a TRI-bike so I made it one of my weight-loss goals. When I reach 162lbs I can get a TRI-bike

275$ for a coach..wow. It's probably worth it but I would definitely be too cheap to get one I also have my husband here in case I need some coaching...

IDEALMUSE, you can make it into ONEderland next week Just focus on it I was so close for many many months and somehow had that mental blockage....once I got under 200 it was no stopping me

AZSUNSHINE, good luck tomorrow I bet you will do great Just take it easy on the swim. BTW how did your 750m swimmin go??  I also need to do the distance of the swim TRI during the week before (even if it is only 400m or so) just to convince my head that I can still do it. It might be stupid but thats the way I am lol

Regarding the TRI-Suit. So far I have not had the courage of buying and wearing one. But I got a Tri-Top before my last TRI and wore that together with my TRI-pants. Technically it almost looks the same as a Tri-Suit but somehow in my head it was different lol Before that it was Tri-shorts, sports bra and t-shirt for me. But as someone else said, nobody really looks good in these things... so don't worry!!!

LOSTA, GREAT loss this week!! Congrats   Bootcamp class sounds fun Is it tough?? In my eyes everyone is a hero who gets through a bootcamp class

KIRIH, I have no idea what "Ulysses " is but will google it now

Happy weekend everyone

I hear ya'all on the $275 for the bike coach.  I was kind of expecting to hear him say something like $150 and gulped when he said $275.  But I suck at biking and while I know part of that is because I don't bike enough, I know that there s plenty that I  just flat out don't know.  So, I am going to do it at least until the HIM at the end of March and if I do the IM, then through that.  Of course, there's this house that I want to buy next door to my son.  It isn't on the market yet (the elderly owner just went into assisted living and I don't know if the family is going to keep the house for a while or what) and if I do buy it, I am guessing that there won't be $275 for a bike coach.

I am also going to get an indoor bike trainer.  We don't watch any commercial television, but we do get movies and documentaries from Netflix.  Personally, I think we watch too many of those, but Chuck likes it and so I watch with him.  I think I won't mind watching so much if I get the trainer and am able to do whatever workout my coach prescribes while watching TV.  I've never done that before and don't really know how hard it is to concentrate.  But it is pretty clear that if I am going to spend $275 for a bike coach, I jolly well better do whatever workout he gives me.
