Master 1397 Granvile, Ohio | Subject: RE: Team #3 - August 4 is More Challenge Slugger - 2009-08-11 3:12 AM Had an awesome backpack this weekend. I'm really struggling with the limitations of my body and mind right now. Got a call from the MS office right before I hit the trail confirming that I need to have a lumbar puncture. I knew it, but now it is official. Whatever, I just want to get it overwith. I've decided to skip work next Sunday night to go backpacking again. I had to wrestle a vacation day from work to be able to do the lumbar puncture so I won't get paid, but I'm going anyway. I've worked out how to carry the absolute minimum weight possible, so I really hope I'll be able to do the whole thing. I may be feeling crummy now, but I won't let this stupid disease keep me down for long! AWESOME attitude! Have a great time next Sunday. How far will you go backpacking? |

Sorry about turtleman. It was for the better. They ended up cancelling the swim and run due to lightning. I ended up doing just about as much biking with my wife that morning. |

Elite 3913 far northern CA | Subject: RE: Team #3 - August 4 is More Challenge ilucy2 - 2009-08-10 7:17 AM Today is a rest day.....still have the urge to run. So here is my thoughts. I read everyones logs, and they have long 2-4 hour sessions of run/bike. How does the family react to that, and are they into the tri thing too? My HB is NOT active at all, nor is any of my family supportive (extended). I have to get up at stupid hours and do it while they are sleeping. They do not understand why I do this to myself and often get cheated out of planned races. Kind of a serious topic, but a struggle. I will not be racing next weekend as planned.... . He wants to travel in the opposite direction for a carshow. weeee. I will get a long run in anyway. I'm really lucky that my husband loves triathlons and races just as much as I do. He's not really the training type. He just rides and runs for fun. Then he kicks everyone's at a race. It makes me so mad! The rest of our family doesn't "get" the triathlon thing either. Oh well. We enjoy it. I hope you can go to a race soon in exchange for going to his car show! |

He wants to travel in the opposite direction for a carshow. weeee. I will get a long run in anyway. Sorry that I'm getting to this late. You have gotten a bunch of great comments. I have been there in spades with you. My wife is generally jealous of the time that I spend on TRI stuff. I can be on facebook/email/postsecret/games on my computer for hours and if I switch it to BT or another tri site I get the look. I have stopped talking about TRI stuff for the most part with her. Most of my workouts are done in the morning before everyone is awake. The second workouts in the afternoon are problematic. Spousal logic is not always easy to figure out. It is ok for me to get up a 5:00 and bike until 9 and then work until 6. If I get to work at 5:00 am and then bike at 2:00 and am home by 4:00 it is viewed as "putting the tri" stuff before the family. Yup it doesn't make sense. I have figure out certain things like this and it make it easier. One of the sites that train with has a concept called Spousal Approval Unit (SAU). You bid these up when your training is light--knowing that they will be called into play later in the year. Date night... we schedule meetings and workouts--schedule getting gifts (I need to take my advice). Then when you need you the longer workout times you can the cash in your SAU. Also, you have a 16 to 20 week plan (I would guess). Look ahead on the long workouts--put them on the family calendar. I have a 112 ride/6 mile run (sound fun) coming up next month. My wife called me today about going to a wedding. I reminded her about this this and said that I could not go to the wedding (of someone I have met once) and that I would not be able to watch the kids that day. Because I had it nailed (for once) I didn't burn any bridges. Generally my wife has been more supportive of my journey to Kona--but earlier this year she was told not to run any more by her doctor. She took it out on me and my training and races. She saw it later--but it was hell on earth for three weeks. Good luck--I'm always looking for ideas on earning SAUs. |

Master 2665 The Whites, New Hampshire | Subject: RE: Team #3 - August 4 is More Challenge Thanks for the support, everyone! It means so much to have such a strong community here. I was pretty down all day yesterday, but I ate a couple Snickers Mini Ice Cream Bars and so life is better now. I did end up scrapping my ride in. Feeling run down, then t-storms, with more rain predicted in the morning, and then finally the realization that my rain jacket is BLACK all combined to say, "Um, no." Oh well. Just hoping I'll still get my 8 rides in to get my $20 from work! Since, uh, I already spent $25 bucks on a new light... |
