grannygear - 2009-12-28 7:40 AM Thanks everyone for the congrats on the bike.  It is a Felt B2R only lacking engine.  Bri sorry about those Beavers, Yay Cougs (True Blue here)!  Just finished importing training plans for the year, I haven't used these before, and may have a few dumb questions when I start logging in a few days.

Melinda...Not so sad on the Beaver's lose.  Not a real big fan of the Beavo's.  True University of Oregon Duck Fan here, but it is nice to cheer for them after the Civil War.

What is on tap for today....after some morning and afternoon taking care of my son and a friend he is having over it will be off to the Athletic Club for a swim and CORE Workout.  I might even try to texture our small Bathroom we are remodeling.  Never a dull moment around here.

Had a good spin class / treadmill run workout this morning, and back at work now.  Need to wrap up the year and still lots of year-end accounting and projects to finish-up before the 1st.  Also, the goodies and big family meals are starting to push up the scales... not too happy about that.  Guess I'll just try to get in a good week of workouts and then re-focus on diet in the new year.  Hopefully I can break-even over the next week.  Anyone want to do a January weight goal challenge?

Being the fattest "man" or person rather, in the group (I'm sure). That is one challenge I am positive I can win! Either total pounds or percentage of body weight. Laughing So, YES I'm up for a challenge. BTW I got a new pair of jeans for Christmas and the new 36" waist fits very nicely.Cool

Outstanding day today!  Work was slow so I knocked off early and took tomorrow and Wednesday as vaca days....

1 hour on the trainer, 1.5 mile run to the Y, 500 yards of drills in the pool and 1.5 mile run home!

Fabulous!  One of my absolute favorite workouts is a run to the pool, swim, then run back.  I don't know why that feels so good, but it sure does.

Well, I need SOMETHING to motivate me to shape up.  I've eaten and drunk more than my fair share this holidays.  I've gotten some decent workouts in, so I think I've basically broken even, but I need to LOSE!  Name the challenge and I'll be on board!

Table from Runner's World that illustrates how much faster you could be if you lost weight. Of course, this would not take into account speed increases due to training.

According to RW author Amby Burfoot, the table is based on research that runners, on average get 2 seconds per mile faster for every pound they lose. The times you see above are the amounts a runner can shave off his/her race times by losing weight.

Based on the above table, two of my long-term goals would be reached with a 10lb weight loss.  So, let the January - Weight Loss for Speed - Games begin (well on Jan 1... I'll put together some silly rule set).  I'm motivated!

Weightloss challenge- I'll play. I probably only have 4 lbs to drop. I think I could drop more, but my family all stresses out when I go lower than that.
So, count me- it's hard for me to get these 4 off during the winter months.

Ha ha!  Last year I hit my lowest weight since college and my Mom though I was sick.  It made me recall something I think I read by Dan Empfield (of slowtwitch):

"the trick is to keep losing weight until your friends and family ask you if you've been sick. then you know you're within 10 pounds. if they start whispering to each other, wondering if you've got cancer or aids, you're within 5. when they actually do an intervention, you're at race weight."

That's great!  My Mom and Dad are both so thin, I'd have to be almost invisible for them to think I was too thin. Mostly, it stresses out my husband,my 3 year old (he doesn't like it when I'm too "Pointy and sharp") and oldest daughter.

I hit 153 at my lowest.  Currently 165.  My wife told me to start gaining weight when I was 153.  She complained that I was all bony, and when she put her head on my shoulder at night in bed, I was making her uncomfortable...that my shoulder was too hard!

Good Evening... OK, I guess I should start moving down the scale sometime and there is no time like the present.  This will be a tough week with all the Bowl Games, but I can manage.  I have to weigh in at Weight Watchers on Wednesday morning anyway (I am a Lifetime Member) so I can get a good starting weight and I get free weigh-ins each week if I want at no cost and have to weigh in each month.  I need to lose about 13 lbs. to get back to my Lifetime Weight Goal and stop having to pay each month.

I am up for 1 lb. or two each week.

Good morning everyone.  I guess most of us have already gone back to work.  Today's the day for me.  Time to stop pretending like I'm independently wealthy!

What looks good today?  Me:  I've got some make-up training to do (I skipped the hard stuff yesterday as I was a bit sick -- still not 100% today, but good enough to get back at it).  Dry-land swimming, core, bike.

Have a great day, everyone.

In keeping with the spirit of the board, we're trying to support each other reaching our own goals, so the January weight change challenge will be more about supporting each other and public accountability of reaching our own goals rather than a competition.  I'm putting weight change in case anyone has had an intervention already (that was pretty funny Michael), but I know alot of us are trying to lose some more lbs.  We also want to encourage a healthy rate of weight change.  I'll also put in one other goal that you'd like to focus on for January.  For me, that will be increasing my training hours per week to 7.

For those of us who are likely to be watching bowl games and (normally) eating the wrong stuff, let's give ourselves extra incentive not to overdo it on Jan 1st (and 2nd and whenever all those BCS games are).  So, let's do the first weigh-in at the beginning of the day of the New Year and the final weigh-in will be on the morning of Feb 1st.  Rather than take up board space, you can just message me or send an inspire with your Jan weight loss goal and one other goal you'd like listed.  then during January, just send me your progress each weekend and I'll post updated progress tables once/week on Sunday night that will look something like below.
NameJan Change GoalProgressOther GoalProgress
Stu-5 lbs0Increase training to 7hrs / week4.5

The good news is that this is a great time of year to make progress.  Every day is getting longer and the hibernation rituals (like Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas) are mostly behind us (maybe literally!).  Let's get the New Year off to a great start!

I posted this in Tritalk but I wanted to see if anyone in the group had any ideas:

Swimming is a drag, literally. I have an ankle fusion and my foot stuck in a 95 degree angle creates enough drag that it really slows me down. Plus I have to use a lot of energy kicking to keep my legs from sinking. Any thoughts on wetsuit/pants to use in the pool to add some buoyancy to my lower body while swim training? Thanks

Phil

Phil, in the old days we had these little styrofoam buoys that you'd put between your legs to work on pull.  The bad news is you really can't kick with them, but they do keep your legs and lower body higher.  Not sure if they're still around or not.  Speaking of swimming... I'm off to swim/lunch.  Cheers!  -Stu

Yep, those are 'pull buoys'.  You should be able to find them at most pools, or buy one in a sporting goods shop.

They are not legal in races, though.  They are helpful for teaching your body how to get in a better position int he water, but you definitely do not want to use them as a crutch.

I don't have any brilliant ideas for you.  I would try the pull buoy and see what it feels like, bearing in mind what I said above (although a wetsuit will provide a LOT of buoyancy in the water).  Swimming in a wetsuit in the pool doesn't sound fun at all.  Hopefully you'll get some good advice from some real swimmers on the Tri Talk forum.

Thanks Michael. Got a lot of good ideas. "Pull Buoys" seem to the suggestion of choice. Finis makes some that actually wrap around each thigh. I can still kick and get the extra lift I need. The opinion in tri talk is that a wet suit will offer similar buoyancy. So train with the pull buoys and race in the wetsuit. Provided the race allows wetsuits.

To give you an idea of my situation, I can use a kickboard, but I hardly move forward. My new found "triathlon hobby" has required several adaptations. This will just have to be another one. However, at least I have legs unlike the kid at Kona. I'll make it work.

I don't have your situation with the fusion, but the first time my swim coach told me to do a kicking drill (with the kickboard), I went BACKWARDS.  It took two months to correct this...

I like your attitude.  Stick with it.  Find a way.
