People where I work are bitter and grumpy. I think they are anti-fun.
Then I sit here at my desk, listen to some music, giggle while I type, and they stare at me.
Sometimes I don't even have music on but I'll keep my earbuds in just in case. If someone says something I'll say I've got a funny podcast or something.
I spend entirely too many hours at work every week to not have a little fun. I hear you on that one. In between BT, FB, and looking up races and training plans - I make a pretty good go of it online each day! I could take college classes on line 9 months of the year but I don't have the desire to do that - I would rather go to the LBS and work on bikes to be honest with you! In previous jobs, if I had nothing to do I could study for a certification or take online classes, they were cool with that. Here though they frown upon it. For some reason it is better if I sit here and do nothing than try to increase my knowledge. So I emailed myself some study documents and I read them from my computer, I would prefer a book, though. I really do need to get out of here. The stress level is off the charts and getting worse. That is the thing most employers don't understand - they are causing a bad work environment by being dumb about down time. I hate being bored and that causes stress and I am sure that is what happens in your case as well! I absolutely HATE WITH A PASSION giving up a day of my life to come in here and DO NOTHING! I think about all the things I could be doing at home. I think about all the things I WANT to be doing. It's frustrating. I'm an IT person, a contractor for the DoD. The people I work for don't know computers. I have continually said that the woman I work for wouldn't have a computer job outside of the government. She has no knowledge, she doesn't trust the contractors at all, so she makes bad decisions. If she didn't work here she'd be bagging groceries somewhere. So it adds to the frustration level that I was brought in here for my subject matter expertise but no one will listen. So more bad decisions are made, then I have to try to clean up their mess. I was hired for a technical position but I push a lot of papers. I want to do something technical. I want to get my hands on things (I'm talking computer/network equip. here ). /rant |
