I hope Kip had a better day out there than me.  The swim sucked.  I could not get a rhythm with the chop and backstroked most of it.  Bike was the highlight of my day--even with headwoind all the way! Nonstop rollers too.  Run sucked.....leg cramps, needed a bathroom break and NONE on the course...feet went numb and I wound up going barefoot for the last 2 1/2 miles.

I am sorry you didn't have a good race, sounds like somewhat of a miserable day. Good thing is, you have all summer to improve on that.

Really barefoot running?  My feet don't even tolerate walking barefoot!

Way to push through it

Thanks.
I have never tried barefoot running for more than 100 yards here and there.  I was desperate cause the feet were so numb.  Not entirely sure why.  I have done bricks with these shoes (zoots with yanks) and not had an issue. That's the thing that bugs me about the feet...not knowing what was up with the numbness.

Sounds like less than ideal conditions.  Way to keep going through all that crap and finish.  No kybos on the run course?  Seriously?  That's awful.

Again, proud of you for sticking with it.  Hope the next race goes much better!

Did they start going numb on the bike or just on the run?

I had a great 10k this morning.  Ideal running weather.  High 40s and sun with just a little bit of wind.

I finished 2nd overall with a time 37:27.  I am pretty sure that they shorted the course by about a 1/4 mile, but I'm still happy as heck with that time.  Big PR either way.

Did they start going numb on the bike or just on the run?

It was weird, first I had the calf cramps for the early part of the run and after they went away I had numbness in my feet.  Tried adjusting the yanks, no help.  It felt like a diabetic neuropathy until I took my shoes off-even then it didn't go away until after I had been barefoot a good mile or so.

I'm wondering if the cramps and numbness are a related process.....I ran out of heed when I was mixing my bottles up so it was more watery than I usually drink.  I don't know, it's the only thing that really makes sense to me right now.

QZ, good job on getting through hard race. Look at it this way a bad race is better than a good day sitting on your a$$!

Great job Distrubed for the PR! It could be call PR for short 10K course.

Kip, Briania, Scotty how did your races turn out?

If you all read my intro you know I have been sedentary for some time now and I have rededicated myself into losing weight and getting back into shape. Last week was my first full week on training, it was hard but I feel good at what I was able to accomplish. I am serious about doing this and the problem I am having is balancing everything. All I wanted to do last week on my free time was train, eat, or sleep. Well I was able to go hunting two mornings. Between my job, kid’s track meets and various other activities, and training social life was non-existence. I am divorced/single and normally have a date one night a week and see another group of just social friends a couple times a week. I was tired and sore all week and did not have the time or energy to be social. It just seems like last week I was a recluse. I know one solution is find a group to train with and there is a couple around here but it never seems that our schedule line up. I did take yesterday off and enjoyed it but I felt guilty and going to do some extra today to make up for it.

Any thoughts or suggestions.

Depending on the ages of your kids.....are they old enough to get themselves ready for school so you can train in the early hours of the morning?  Or...are they old enough to do some things with you?  Perhaps you run laps in a park while they play or if they're old enough to ride or run with you on some of the easier days?

Cramps can be from low sodium.  If you were low in your additive that could have been it.

I heard it was choppy.  When I did this course in the fall had cramp problems.  Those steep little hill killed my legs.  Wow barefoot running to finish.  Those road weren't real smooth either.

Just back from Lake Anna I really had my worst race ever. The swim was extremely choppy but got through it pretty well my buddy went off 8 minutes before me and got out the same time so I felt good about the swim, in Transition everytime I went to put my bike shoes on I got a terrible cramp in my hamstring finally got on the bike and downhill from there about half way through the bike I started felling sick at my stomach so I backed off a little and thought I was going to be alright but really got sick at my stomach at about the 5k mark of the run and had to run in the woods and toss my cookies. I actually thought I was going to recover after that but about mile 4 I starting getting sick again so I tried walking at the water stations and then it was just over I spent the last 2 miles running about 100 yards and then walking to get my stomach settled down, ran the last bit through the woods and then just went and laid in transition, really at a loss right now sorta sucked

Sorry to hear about the rough race.  Nice job gutting it out.  Did you ingest more water than usual with the choppy swim?  I wonder if that was enough to upset your stomach so much.  Anything else different nutrition-wise?

If you can learn anything about what went wrong, great, otherwise some races are better to just forget about.  Rest, recover, and look forward to the next one.

Wow Kip.  I'm really sorry to read that your race sucked so much.  I guess it just wasn't your day.  Future events just have to be better after something like this, right?  Take care in your recovery.

Well I just do not know what went wrong, I guess that is what's so frustrating, I did take in a lot more water than usual on the swim but felt fine getting out, the cramp in transition was strange only when I would bend to put on my shoe, just really at a loss right know trying to shake it off because I have Smith Mountain Lake in 2 weeks. Ride today and see how I feel???

Happy Monday everyone!

Great job on the 10K PR Neal.

Sorry about the tough races.  Just chalk it up to your early first race of the season.  Dealing with issues will only make you stronger for your next race.  You were out there racing which is always better than nothing!

Starting the marathon plan blended with a tri training plan this week.  Lots more yellow on my graph starting this week.

Is foam rolling the only thing to use for ITB or does anyone know of any specific stretches to supplement the rolling?

Judi & Kip - Sorry to hear about your races Frown  That's really disappointing, but there are always others to look forward to, right?  I guess they can't ALL be good.

Neal, congrats on the PR!  That's pretty sweet.

Lori - I like to do pigeon pose to stretch out my IT band.  I'm pretty flexible, so for me that & foam rolling are the only 2 things I've found to stretch it out!
