I don't have much to add on the saddle front as I'm running a gel one on the roadie and the stock fuji one on the tri bike until I can get a pro fitting done. Good to know that there are so many different options out there!

Pedals: I run SPD's on my road as I use it for commuting a lot but have put SL's on the tri as a test. So far they're about the same to clip in if not slightly easier most of the time. They do feel like a much larger contact plate though which makes them comfier to me at least.

Personally I think I'm going to have to change my tri shoes as they're a little snug and can't be worn with socks. Does anyone have any thoughts on tri shoes v road shoes for longer distances? How about preferred makes / models for post-Christmas bargain hunting?

On another note - I just ran my furthest this year

Got in a run at lunch today which put me at my highest month ever in run miles and volume.  I still have 7 more miles for my goal, but I'm hoping I actually do about 13 before new years.  I'm pretty excited I hit the goal in running I made back in September (run 20 miles/month more in december than september).  Anyone else hit/going to hit a big goal this month? year?

Seems like Tim had a good one with his long run - congrats!

jsiegs -   Anyone else hit/going to hit a big goal this month? year?

Did my last swim of the year at lunch and it looks like I will finish the year at 379,202 yards (215.45 miles).  I really can't imagine swimming that much but I spent alot of time in the pool from Feb-May due to a hamstring injury that knocked me out of all running and most cycling. SO, while my swim numbers are way up for the year my run and bike numbers are down.  Hopefully, in 2011 I can get to 1000 miles running and 4500 miles biking.

Oh, and even with all that swimming there is no way anyone would call me a "swimmer"

Todd: Thanks for posting up the screen shots of Ascent - I am a mac user as well and have used iSmartTrain for the past 5 years. I have been considering switching over to Ascent for some time now, but iSmartTrain is the only software that I have been able to find to "elegantly" allow my polar HRMs to talk to my mac. A couple of months ago I switch my bike computers over to a Garmin 500 and a Garmin 800, and am about to try out different GPS wrist units for running, so now  and think I will give Ascent a whirl. January 1 seems like a great time to start using a new logging software anyway.

Randy, et. al.: thanks for the input on monitoring pace - I picked up a Garmin 410 yesterday and will test it out. I really went back and forth between the 410 and the 310xt, but went for the form-factor on the 410. That and I don't need the added bike functions. I will swap it out for the 310xt if I don't like it. The thing that will take me a while to figure out a "race day work flow" with all these devices. One of the best things about racing RPE is that on race day all I ever use is a watch and a bike computer to mainly watch cadence. At the beginning of the swim, I hit go, then hit my splits, and stop at the finish line. For my IM race this year, I plan on using a HRM as a check; not sure any of the GPS units will go the time distance of a full IM? I would like to have a single unit that I can run train with, and then use it in races to do time only on the swim and bike, then time and HR on the run, without too much fiddling around and without starting a new session. This is how my old Polars work. If the 410 will do that, then awesome - if not, back it goes to REI! And sorry for all the technology talk, Kate - I hope I have not disappointed by falling off the wagon so hard. If it any consolation, it is only because my coach really wants the metrics!

Fred: The holiday CONTINUES to be great - I hope everyone else is enjoying theirs? I had a little travel snafu at the beginning of the week and missed Monday's workout. I am in the middle of a relatively tough LT block, so my coach "encouraged" me to double stack my workouts yesterday to get them in. It was OK yesterday, but lets just say it made today's trainer workout extra "fun." Tomorrow I have a 4500 yard swim, (3600 endurance pace sandwiched in between warm up and cool down drill sets) so that should give me a little breather to recover. Then Fri-Sun are hammer-time again. School does not start up until January 10th, so until then I am "working from home" AKA training like crazy!

Catwoman - 2010-12-28 3:25 PM Can we discuss pedals next?

Rene: I have used Speedplay pedals exclusively since about 1993 or '94. I. Love.Them. Period. The amount of float they offer is fantastic if you need it, and the dual side entry cannot be beat. While it is not reccomended, I even use them on my mountain bike with no trouble. If you are one of the cool kids that is compelled to place your shoes in your pedals in T-1 however, Speedplays are most likely not for you; most folks that I know that ride with them  say they simply have too much float and come un-clipped WAY too easy.

StMaas - 2010-12-28 6:06 PM One thing I noted once I started riding longer this past summer, the stock saddle on my Roubaix won't cut it for repeated long hauls.  Reccomendations/opinions on seating upgrades, especially for the 'big-boned' set would be appreciated!

Steve and others - when it comes to saddles I am admittedly way old fashioned. I have one  requirements for mine: it needs to look good on the bike   I am really fortunate in that I am very comfortable in my aerobars, even with a pretty aggressive setup. Much more so than sitting up. When sitting up I am WAY too stretched out. However, even in the aerobars I do move fore and aft a bit in the saddle depending on the terrain - but spend most of my time out on the nose of the saddle, so my saddles are a bit on the minimalist side. On a 5 hour ride, easily 4.5 of that will be in the aerobars. I stay down on all but the sharpest of climbs; so I like a very narrow saddle so that my adductors clear the nose even when I slide all the way back. I ride a Selle Italia Gel Flow on my road bike, and a Selle San Marco "Island" on my tri bike. The version of the Island I ride is made for TTs, so it does have a bit more cush on the nose. All that said, because I am aiming at IMLP (which I hear has a few hills?) I may try out the TT version called the "Mantra" which has the same narrow profile, a bit of cushion on the nose, and a cutout to ease-up on the perineal area. My Gel Flow has similar - that is why I like riding it in the mountains.

Do you find that mud, dirt, rocks etc get caught in your cleat using Speedplay pedals?  I guess if you keep the shoes on the bike that wouldn't be an issue but for someone like me that could be a problem. I have read that that happens with Speedplay (not that I know anything about them except that they look like a lollipop

The Garmin 310XT works perfectly for an IM. Very easy to use and operate.

Thanks for the information on Speedplay. I'm a "Look" girl. What I'd like is a recommendation on a specific Look Keo pedal. If anyone has one that they highly recommend please let me know.

I purchased a 310XT a couple of months ago. While it is more then I probably need, I liked the fact that I could swim with it and not worry about ruining it and it also is supposed to have a 20 hour battery life which is something I will need for my Ironman Smile
I just had the candence sensor put on my bike and am going to see how the quick release thingy works with me mmoving it from my bike to my wrist and vise versa.

Fred Doucette - 2010-12-28 6:49 PM So there is a thread in tri talk about 'does being a triathlete define who you are?' what do you folks think? Does it define you or is it a really big part of your identity? Do most of your friends know that you are a triathlete etc? Thoughts?

Nope - not at all. It is probably silly, but the way I personally approach this lifestyle is really as a luxury - and I would hate to be defined by a luxury. Like Steve, I mostly avoid engaging non-tri friends and colleagues in the blackhole of tri-speak, but with my geek friends, OH the conversations we have! A typical invitation for a dinner get-together goes something like:

Hey everybody - how about dinner tonight? I just got finished with a 4500 yard pool session and a 16 mile run. I cannot wait to tell you all about it! I have reduced my 500 splits by 2 seconds at submaximal LT pace. There is this one part on the run between mile 12.4 and 13.2 that I know everyone will enjoy hearing about - my heart rate was in E4 Endarance zone, but then I mistakenly consumed 20 grams of "Chocolate Blast" Gu Rocktane with 50 mg of caffeine and my HR climbed rapidly into Zone 5a intensity. It was HYSTERICAL!!! I don't want to give away the ending of the story, but it involved the rapid ingestion of a 20/30 mixture of protein/carb hydration mix while running up a 4.2% grade. All I can say is "thank goodness for compression sleeves!" It is an awesome story  - I cannot wait to tell it!!!

Oh, but we WILL need to meet earlier than usual - I have to get up at 4:30am to do a 5 hour ride in endurance zone 2. If anybody wants to go with me let me know; I probably will not roll out until 5:15; I have to give my whey protein shake time to digest.

In the end, one of the most awesome things about this sport is that it brings so many people to it from such a wide array of motivations, I say if it IS the way you define yourself - that is fantastic - be really good at it then! and that does not necessarily mean train 20 hours a week, podium all the time, and go pro BTW, it just means be good at it every day.

Anyone else hit/going to hit a big goal this month? year?

I just went over 2,000 miles in the saddle last night, and 500 miles in running shoes earlier this month; my swim totals will be ~226k yards, a bit light for me but good considering time and work restrictions the past year.
Oh, and checked the box on the bucket list for 70.3, one step closer to 'IM before 50' Laughing

No - I have never had a problem with mine, and I don't clip them in on the bike BTW - I always run through T-1 in them. I scope the route first though - If it is a long and/or muddy transition I *might* carry them in my hand to the mount line, but that is rare.

TriPatrick - 2010-12-28 7:26 PM I am using my stock quintana roo saddle.  I have close 2800 miles this year and I have yet to cuss the saddle.  My longest was only 80 miles, but I feel I will be able to do more.  Are you wearing good cycling shorts?  I wear desoto 400 mile shorts on most of my rides and they are nice.

Patrick - I agree completely with this: good shorts are a very important part of the overall butt/saddle interface. I too swear by my Desoto 400 mile shorts - not only are they incredibly comfortable on 100+ mile days, I love the 3 pockets - a brilliant idea for long-haul shorts. I love them so much I have 4 pair plus one pair of bibs and that is all I ride in. They cost a little bank, but I get a great deal on desoto products through our club. It does bring up a topic for later - what does everybody wear for the 1/2 or full IM?

Awesome - congrats on the Run - sounds like everybody is putting in big volume this year - in fact, I think I just read Steve rode 2000 miles LAST NIGHT ALONE!

I wear tri shoes all the time. I race sockless, and  find tri shoes to typically be much more comfortable this way. I am certainly no expert, but I really think for longer distance races, road vs. tri shoes matters less though - I have to think comfort trumps a few seconds of time savings in a HIM and longer. For a half, i go sockless - but for an IM I am pretty sure I will take the time to put on a pair of socks! I am on my third pair of Sidi t2's, and like the fact that closures go toward the bike frame rather than away like most bike shoes do. I have found it much, much easier to adjust on the fly while riding because of this simple design detail.

Fred Doucette - 2010-12-29 6:24 PM I should also have added that at WTC IM events, you are not permitted to leave your shoes pre-clipped in on the bike. Unless of course you are a professional

Hey Fred, I thought this was true too - I sure know there was a lot of chitter chatter on the interwebs about that this summer. I looked through the 2010 rules a while back (both WTC and USAT) and I could not find a reference. It is definitely true however that more and more race directors are opting to put this rule in, and I don't blame them. Having volunteered at a couple of races at the mount/dismount line, I can say that it is a very bad idea all around! But hey - to each their own, right?
