I can possibly add tendonitis in my wrist from decorating 60 cupcakes tonight...and no I did not eat one not even the frosting! By the way I did get your PM and I will send you my number as well. Maybe we can chat pre-race or post race for a bit! Happy training!!!! |

Expert 799 Waukesha, WI | Subject: RE: Tripletmom01 Group FULL Jodi - I did A LOT of races last season (tammy knows) and I did get very burnt out...but I think it depends a lot on how seriously you take the races. I took them all very seriously and I set very high expectations for myself. If I was able to race "just for fun" then doing 14-15 races would be doable. I can say that I got a ton of experience with all the racing I did. |

I took them all very seriously and I set very high expectations for myself. If I was able to race "just for fun" then doing 14-15 races would be doable. I can say that I got a ton of experience with all the racing I did. I did 21 Races in 2010 Down from racing 30 times in 2009. The only reason I did less was cause I really could not race for 3 months early in the year cause of injury (gee how did that happen?) I took every one of those with the exception of one (which i did with my daughters) seriously. Never burnt out on racing, loved it. Total blast. This is not to say that I think that its best for top performance. It does take a lot out of me and I may never be fully ready for the next race. As long as my perception is that I'm having fun, improving, and stay motivated. I don't see the harm in it other than the increased injury risk. But I am aware I'm sacrificing being at my 100% best on race day so my time(s) has to suffer. But then again I am a certified maniac, so take my comments with that in mind |

Member 78 | Subject: RE: Tripletmom01 Group FULL I got pretty burned out at the end of 2010. I was doing small races almost every weekend, chasing a running goal. I never made my goal. I was pretty frustrated. I was advised to take a break from races. I did, and my motivation came back. Closely followed by my ankle injury, which is attempting to kill my motivation again. |

Master 1348 Gurnee, IL | Subject: RE: Tripletmom01 Group FULL Also I should say that while I could get away with racing so often perviously, this is my Full Iron year and if I want to finish! I would have to either not race in order to train proper, or do a 5k and then go do a long training ride. So I must modify my maniacness somewhat |

Master 1671 West Bend, WI | Subject: RE: Tripletmom01 Group FULL The thing with racing every weekend is that it requires a taper (at least a small one) and recovery ( I dont know anyone who goes into a race and doesnt put out a hard effort. When you spend all your time tapering and recovering when are you gonna get in the quality workouts in which you can build off of? Yes a race is a great way to build fitness...esp when you do smaller ones to build up to a bigger one. But if you are training for a full or even a HIM and you do sprints everyweekend...when do you get in your long rides and runs? Like I said some racing is good even ideal but every weekend can be detrimental to your performance... besodes what i mentioned again it does burn you out and going that hard every weekend can increase risk for injury. Now is it fun to race all the time? Hells yeah...esp when you are podiuming or chasing a goal |

Expert 799 Waukesha, WI | Subject: RE: Tripletmom01 Group FULL Dave..30 races???? Crazy My schedule: May - Green Bay Half marathon - registered June - Pleasant Prarie Oly July - Pewaukee Tri - registered Racine 70.3 - registered August - ???? an OLY or Sprint most likely September - Lake Country Half Mary October - Lakefront Marathon These are my main races...I want to do a sprint tri where I can really put it all out..Pewaukee would be perfect except for Racine being the next weekend....maybe mid-late august. I will also throw in a duathlon and some 5ks. One of my goals this year is to PR a Half Mary and PR the marathon. I race for a running store and to qualify for "elite" status (which gets us major discounts ) I have to pull in a super fast time. In 2009 and 2010 I had a fast enough 5K time. This year if I can PR a half mary I can get the time again....little bit of extra pressure |

Master 8247 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Tripletmom01 Group FULL "Sob"--What I wouldn't do to have the choice to run a few more races! I love to compete, and it would really help to have some local 5 and 10K's to work on speed, esp. since I don't have a track or really any consistently safe, traffic-free place to do speedwork. But when it costs several hundred dollars to get to each race (entry fees, flights, hotels).....you have to pick and choose. It's hard for me to justify $500+ for a 5K, so I go for tris and longer runs. Most race action in SE Asia is in Singapore and/or organized by Singaporean clubs, and prices for everything are high. I can't afford to race more! |

Regular 81 Marshfield | Subject: RE: Tripletmom01 Group FULL I realize doing alot of races can have negative effects. I think it is just that it is so dang exciting!!! This truly is only my second season of doing tris and half marys. I am really second guessing whether I am ready for a half ironman. I am going to plan it month by month and just do what makes me happy. I am just very much a planner but I do realize the best made plans can change!!! Thanks for the feedback all |

Thanks for the feedback all Well Just my opinion, but I don't see why you would not be ready for a Half-Iron. Since you do half-mary's, and swim is probably not so much an issue, the real issue/challenge would be the bike. You just put in the miles and you can do the half. AND you will always second guess it. Until you do one, then you will stop with the second guessing. You will finish no matter what. Perhaps not get the time you want. But then you will have really learned. You can do it!! |

New user 13 CC, TX | Subject: RE: Tripletmom01 Group FULL Hi everybody, I got sold on trying the vibram fivefinger shoes and now I am waiting for them come in the mail. What really made me want to try them was the fact that they seem to strengthen your calves overtime (got skinny calves). I've been working on my running stance, stride and foot strike. I can definitely tell the difference in my run when I am paying attention and correct myself... Anyways, I currently run in some super-plush asics nimbus and I am planning to use the VFFs as a complement. My transition plan is to start walking in them for .5 mile on the indoor track at school for a week and run the rest with my asics. After a week, I'll see if I dare to run .25 mi in them. Any experiences running with gorilla feet ? Edited by pacificsand 2011-01-19 3:58 AM |

Veteran 458 , Wisconsin | Subject: RE: Tripletmom01 Group FULL Regarding races...I used to race a lot more but I've realized I enjoy meeting my training goals more, and I'm able to do that more effectively with fewer races. Also, this is really dumb but....the mental portion of things (insomnia while worrying about meeting my goals, travel planning, etc) also took its toll on me. I struggle with sleep issues and anxiety always affects my rest. It's kinda dumb because I'm not remotely competitive but I still feel a lot of race anxiety. Running fewer races has been great for me and it allows me to enjoy daily workouts without feeling like I need to taper a little or recover (or plan for travel), like Tammy mentioned. Also, now my job requires that I work 2 out of every 3 weekends so my race options are pretty limited. Edited by SpottedCow 2011-01-19 8:20 AM |

My own opinion is that they are an incredible fad. People use to buy pet rocks. by the bucket loads Sea monkeys sold by the millions in the back of comic books. Cabbage patch kids, country line dancing, the Segway was supposed to revolutionize the way cities were built. I think you get my point. I think this whole born to run, vibram shoe things is a hysterical fad. BUT this is just my opinion |

I had a cabbage patch kid and I always wanted a tamagochi. :D I gotta admit I have a pair of reebok run-tones (mega fad) and they were really comfortable, almost like walking on pillows... until one shoe deflated. I did not use them to run long distance because I find them too unstable. Oh well, I think the VFFs are hideous but I really trust the advice of my friend that runs in them... I'll keep you posted. Should really strengthen the foot and lower legs also. Yes...Go PACK!! |
