Yes a very quiet group today!! Did get my water challenge done. Swam 2250 and did 30 mins on the arc trainer and 45 mins of strength.

Terry fractured her ribs skiing so we need to send her some healing vibes. Let us know how you are doing Terry!!!!

I have to make up my mind what I am going to do about my knee. I have a torn meniscus and have been trying to allow it to heal...but have been very unsuccessful. I think I am facing surgery or stopping running completely. Neither of these options are terribly appealing.

We are on tap to get another foot of snow tomorrow and our snow blower died today....I am full of good news today!!!!

I went to the gym, Running was not an option, I did walk on the treadmill for 25minutes, and then I tried the pool. I was able to use the kick board and side stroke and back stroke. I would get very disoriented with my face in the water. The vertigo is better> My workout on Sunday was good and I plan on doing the same tomorrow.

Got all my water in today.
I am taking it easy, If anything is painful I back off.  I've been so excited about starting to train for the sprint I don't want to lose the motivation. I know it will all work out.

thanks for the healing vibes. Thanks Mav too.

I'm in for the upcoming challenge.  I'm doing the same competition at the YMCA during the month of Feb.  I signed up for the IM so that'll be my goal here, too.  The next two weeks will be spent out of town for work.  Texas for a week and then Minneapolis for the next.  I am hoping the hotels have an adequate work out room.   I'm still battling my lower leg pain, and it's limiting my workouts.

Mav, You guys are surely getting hammered with the snow!

Terry,  I hope you have a quick recovery.

Terry,  2 years ago I had a cycling accident. I landed on my face and chest. I fractured my jaw and although the chest xray didnt show any fractures the MD said I probably had micro fractures. My jaw hurt, but my chest hurt just as bad. Take the time to let it heal. I cant believe you were able to ski as much as you did. I did find that when I could finally exercise walking was what was most comfortable, and I eased my way back in with swimming. Took me quite a while before I could run. Let Motrin be your friend.

Safe travels Katie...hope you can find some place to train along the way.

Going to try to find a snow blower today...wish me luckLaughing

How is everyone this morning.  Now that I've gotten that marathon thing out of my system, I'm back to normal.  Not that anyone else thinks I'm normal.

I have a recommendation for the group.  Take a look at 'thesufferfest' website gallery of bike torture centers.  Lots of good ideas on what you need around your trainer to make bike training indoors fun.
http://www.thesufferfest.com/bike-torture-chamber  Don't forget you're going to need a bucket.

When I got to work this morning there was a package from shimano on my desk, a new cassette and chain.  The new cassette is 11-28.   Special order for the conquest of the hills on IMCDA.  Shiny new bike parts make my day.

Cheers,
Mark

thanks Mav, I will heed your advise, I was very sore this morning. Didn't go skiing like I had planned, stayed in bed and slept till 1. I guess I was quite tired.LOL.
I have found that I can ride the bike and still feel pretty good.  I rode today for 25 minutes and maintained 99-105 RPM, 6.12 miles.

I did a different strength training today. The gym calls it TRX.  Its a total body suspension trainer. Straps that hang from the ceiling and you use your body as the weight.  It was a 1 hour class, I did all the easier postions, still felt like a pretty good workout.
Has anyone seen or heard of this.

Plan to head to the mountains tomorow to enjoy the snow.

Hey Mark,
Glad you got some shiny new things for your bike. I must admit that I am utterly confused by all the gadgets and parts to a bike. I read on this site about all these things people are upgrading and it means nothing to me. Not that I am looking to upgrade my bike a the moment but I would be interested in learning more about what type of upgrades are considered important and what I may want to think about for the future. Where do you get this type of info? The one thing I do want to get this year is clipless pedals.

Oh Mark.......love shiny bike parts. Are you going to change your own cassette? I have yet to learn to fix my bike , I can do tires and pack it in the bike box but thats the extent!!!

Les if you are interested in learning basic bike repairs a lot of bike shops will offer basic classes ( especially in the off season). If you call them and they dont have one, you can ask if they know of one. SOmetimes there is a small fee but its usually minimal. They want your business and this is a way to get people into the shop. They will cover everything from tires, brake adjustment, changing chains and cleaning etc.

Terry, looks like you are feeling better, so good to see

I didnt work out yesterday. My knee hurt and I was a bit crabby. Today I will get strength training in as we got over a foot of snow!!! We have no snow blower and there are non left in central Mass stores...so shovel away today!!!

I've always been a gear head and it's quite natural for the bike to be my favorite leg of the triathlon.  I'm going the change the cassette and put on the new chain.  Sorry about the long post.

Why would a triathlete want to change cassettes.  In my case I live in an area with lots of hills and the IM event I'm training for (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) is a hilly course.  For this reason I'm looking for an extra easy gear that will allow me to spin at a higher cadance up long steep hills without burning out my legs.  The new cassette also allows me to change the go fast gear.  During training runs I can pull 20-22mph on the 12 tooth cog, I hope to pull 22-24mph on the new 11 tooth cog.  There will be some training to get up to that power ratio, but I'm optimistic I can pull 24 without slowing down my cadance.  If not I can seperate the cassette and create a 12-28.

The original cassette that came with the bike was an Ultegra 10-speed 12-25.  The smallest (fastest) cog in the cassette has 12 teeth, the largest (easiest) has 25 teeth.  My new cassette is an 11-28.  11 is faster at the low range and 28 is easier at the high end.  The downside is there will be longer steps between gears/  The cassette seperates into cogs and spacers.  The 5 smallest gears are bonded into one piece.  If the 11 turns out to be too dificult to crank at my usual cadance, I can swap the bottom 5 (11,12,13,14,16) with the original bottom 5 (12,13,14,15,16) and ride with a 12-28.  If I find myself going to a race somewhere flat, perhaps IM Arizona, I might choose to ride with the 11-25.

I spend a lot of time measuring my power output on the bike compared to heart rate.  The race day goals are to go hard enough not to fall behind (ensure I make the bike cut-off time) but not so hard that I'm unable to run fast off the bike.

Hey - Is there anybody out there?

@Lobster - One of my favorite books on the subject of bikes is 'Zinn's cycling primer'.  Lennard Zinn has written some excellent bike books in his - Zinn and the art of bicycle maint series.  This book is not just about the bike.  He provides the best description of the bike fitting process I've seen anywhere.  He also covers what you need to know to about your bike and your body to have a long health relationship with each other.

The full title is Zinn’s Cycling Primer - Maintanece tips and skill building for cyclists.

Thanks Mark for the cassette explanation. That is the type of info I am looking for. I figure if I learn a litttle at a time it will sink in!
I will take a look for that book- thanks for the suggestion.

You all lost me on the bike talk. Wow I really am a newbie. I'm glad someone likes to do that I just want to get  on my bike and go. LOL.

I went snowboarding today.  Came back and took the dog to the park. Then got the itch and went to the gym, I walked and kinda ran on the treadmill. Ran for 2-3 minutes and walked for 5m.  Swam for30 minutes I used the kickboard mostly and practiced breathing.

Ribs still hurt but seem to be improving.

I'm really struggling with losing these last 25 pounds.  Does anybody have any good diet advice for training.  I'm finding that I get really hungry between meals and am not very good at picking out healthy snacks other than fruit.  Thanks for any tips.

A-Doc - Two of my old time favorites are:
  1) mix baby carrots and almonds.  They both crunch and you can hardly tell the difference between the low cal carrots and the almonds.  Very Satisfing and will contain the food demon for quite some time.
  2) light laughing cow wedge spread on either high fiber crispbread, like wasa or spread on celery.
  3) Be sure to keep hydrated, morning, noon and night and often inbetween.
  4) Nutrient timing is very important.  Try to get some protein and carbs into your body within 30 minutes of exercise.  This prevents your body from canabolizing <sp> muscle to find protein to rebuild muscle damaged during workouts.  I keep syntha6 protein powder in my car and drink a light shake after every workout.  The bsn product seems to dissolve a bit easier than some of the others I've tried.  I shake the powder with cold water.  In the summer time I add ice to the shaker bottle before workout and have an ice cold shake of chocolate goodness waiting for me after workout.  These are important calories to include in your diet.

Cheers,

Hi Lori,
I dropped 50lbs after the birth of my third child. I think everyone's body responds differently but my success was due to removing any processed food (ie no white stuff- sugar, flour and preservatives), upping my protein intake, and using heavy weights when working out. Much to everyone's surprise I did not spend hours on the treadmill, no cardio was included with my regime at that time. I lost 2lbs a week with the above plan and put about 10lbs back on when I went back to my sendentary job but have managed to keep that the extent of my weight gain over the past year. It wasn't until after this weight loss that I got involved with triathlons.
Stick to a plan for 4 weeks then change it up, set weekly goals and I am sure you will see success.

Hey Lori.
Don't give up, some times you need to add more food to keep the fuel burning. Be sure you are eating every 2 to 3 hours with plenty of  water.  I used celery, cucumbers, I liked them in apple cider vinegar. Add a low fat protein.

Most important don't give up. I really liked the video here on BT.  Check it out. He really explains why as you train you need to eat not diet. I think it was the 10 comandments of weight loss. Good Luck

Today was a needed rest day for me.  I did work 12 hours but nice to sleep a little later this morning.  Hope everyone has a great weekend. We are having a heat wave here. 68 degrees today and tomorrow. I hope to get the bike out and have a nice ride out of doors.

Morning All

Busy day yesterday and I had to work in the pm...so limited BT time. After next week I will have plenty of time. I have decided to get my knee fixed. I will be having surgery on Feb 8th to repair my meniscus. It has come to the point where I cant run without pain and cycling intervals hurt. Its a hard decsion but by the end of the day I find myself limping, and I have no other conservative alternatives left to help.

Lori hang in there...lots of good suggestions on the weight loss front. I cant emphasize daily water enough. It will keep you feeling full throughout the day. I have also found that cutting out 'white" processed foods really makes a difference.

Mark, I had a compact crank and a 12/25 cassette when I bought my bike because I live in a very hilly area, but swapped out for a standard crank and cassette this past year when I was training for AZ as I tried to train on flats as much as possible. I found that I was running out of gears on the compact and loosing speed on the flats and downhills.

I am very jealous of 68 degree temps. Warm weather here is in the 30's. The snow has burried my mailbox...its about 2 feet above the box. We are expecting another foot mid week. I seriously dont know where we will put it.

Terry so glad you are feeling better.

Hi Mav-hope your suregery goes well. What is the recovery time like?

Did strength and a quick bike ride this morn and managed to get a swim in this afternoon. Hoping to get a run and seim in tomorrow. Enjoying my quieter weekend- allows for a bit of extra training. Next month I plan to get in one or two spin classes a week which will be tough to find the time when I  don't want to give up  the strength training.

Hope the quiet board means everyone is enjoying their weekend.

Oh Mav, good luck with the surgery, The best part is you won't be shoveling snow for a few weeks anyway.

I took the dog with on a bike ride and she made it about 3 miles and I had to walk her home. Then I went out for another 20 minutes.
There really is a good difference between indoor and outdoor riding. I enjoyed every minute.

Mav - Wishing you a speedy recovery from your meniscus repair.  Is the bad knee on your strong side?  You'regoing to recover and get stronger, better and faster than ever before.

Thanks for all the well wishes. I really appreciate it. Its my left knee and I tore it this past summer while I was riding on a bike trail. Twisted just the wrong way when coming to multiple stops along a bike path. Anyhow I have had ortho visc injections, which is like fake synovial fluid, steroid injections ( which helped me make it through IMAZ) but it has come to the point that I have to stop running and cycling, or get it fixed. By the time 11 pm rolls around everyday I am limping. If I continue to train with this type of imbalance its only a matter of time before I injure something else. I have a great orthopedic surgeon who has not been quick to say cut it....but the last time I went in she told me that I am out of options. I ran today because even though it hurts...I need to run Plus I will be on the couch for a while...so I have to get my endorphin fix while I can

Hope you are all having a great weekend.

Shouldn't 6 hours of cleaning house count for something. Gave up training today to get the spring cleaning done early. I figure I won't have time before the sprint.

Thanks for all the great suggestions on food intake.  I'm working all night tonight, so tomorrow I will go to the grocery store for more vegetables and low fat cheese.  I can really  tell a difference when I eat more proteins.  I don't get as hungry following my workouts.  The swimming is really coming along, it's still the running that I don't really like.  Take care everybody and have a great week.
