I have exciting news to share!

After 4 years of doing Tri's, I've finally taken the plunge! I just signed up fpr a Stroke class at the Y! First class is 1/19. This is a HUGE deal for me. I love the water, but I'm very self conscious of my poor swim technique.

Equally exciting is the fact that my husband and I are doing this together! This will be our weekly date night.

Good for you!  It probably won't take long to turn that poor technique into a good technique....

Making it a date night is a great idea.  I need to approach my wife with that idea....  thx.

Well, it has been a good 2 weeks of consistent training.  I've been focusing on keeping my heart rate in zone 3 to build my aerobic base.   With my HRM now, I didn't realize I was pushing my intensity too high.  I am planning to keep my volume steady for a few weeks, then start building.

It was a brisk 6 degrees in NH this morning so needless to say, I spent my time on the treadmill.  I hope to get out on the road this weekend when things are supposed to warm up.

So, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on "essentials" for cold weather gear?  Most of my stuff is good for warm weather activities or skiing.  I want to pick up some stuff so I can run in cold weather, but am not sure what to get.

Thx.  Dan

Got in a nice 3.5 mile walk last night. I was with a neighbor who doesn't run, so we speed walked it. It was about 30 degrees out there. Tonight I start a boot camp class. I have been horrible about doing my strength training, so this will sub in. The idea is if I have a class I will go, as opposed to just not going hitting the gym on my own.

Dan, I have a couple different weights of jackets, and two different weights of gloves. I also have a couple pairs of long tights, sometimes I layer up with my long workout pants on top. I also highly recommend a balaclava of some sort. The one I have is called "the buff". You can wear it any way you want, really. If you have an REI or a local running store near you, those are good places to check out and talk to some folks. Keep your head and hands covered. I think layering is the biggest thing, combined with avoiding fleece.

Sub-zero wind chill here today.  Planned 5 mile run at lunch.  I think I need to just "will" myself to warm up -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpKXE2lm4t0

That's hard core. Wow. I got cold just watching it.

How did you determine your zones? If you didn't field test, you might not be targeting the correct heart rate zones, although it's not uncommon for folks who begin HR training to realize they've been running a little to hard....

I tend to move my bike training indoors when it gets below 30-ish, and run training indoors when it gets into the teens or lower (though I will occasionally run in colder temps than that). For cold weather cycling, I typically wear cycling tights, ski socks, neoprene booties over my bike shoes, and sometimes use toe warmers inside my shoes. On top, I layer up according to the temperature. Depending on how cold it is, I may wear a headband, light-weight hat, or balaclava under my helment, and full finger cycling gloves. I've occasionally used a neck gaiter too. Ski goggles can come in handy rather than sun glasses as the cold weather may make your eyes water a little more.

For cold weather running, I typically wear some kind of running tights for the lower half of my body - I have several pair in varying thicknesses, the heaviest is kind of similar to expedition weight polypro long underwear you might be familiar with from skiing. I will sometimes wear some thinner tights with a lightweight pair of wind pants over top of them. I usually wear some kind of technical shirt. If it's 30-ish degrees or warmer, a basic long-sleeve tech shirt is usually warm enough. Sometimes I will wear a long underwear shirt with a short sleeve T-shirt (also tech) on top. As it gets colder, I have some heavier technical tops, kind of like very light weight fleece. Sometimes I wear these alone, sometimes with another layer underneath depending on how cold it is. Again, I will wear a headband or lightweight hat if I think I need it, and light weight gloves. The main thing is that you want wicking fabrics - no cotton.

It's pretty easy to over-dress when it's cold out.... If you're dressed right, you may be a little chilly the first five minutes or so, but then you'll be comfortable. Dress too warmly, and you can start to feel over-heated pretty quickly.

Short swim and longer run in the books for today. I got to use two of my Christmas presents while I was training today - I tried out the new waterproof MP3 player in the pool for the first time - it worked great! It'll be nice to be able to listen to some tunes during some of the longer swim training I have ahead of me... I also got an iPod Touch, and used it to watch an episode and a half of Breaking Bad during a long easy run on the treadmill. Pretty nice!!

How's everybody else doing?

My new global trainer watch came with instructions on how to calculate my max heart rate.  It basically had be do a series of step ups over 3 minutes and then add a scale factor based on my age.  It gave me a max heart rate of around 190 bpm.  From there, the software broke down the max heart rate into zones.  Due to my inexperience with HR training, I've put a lot of faith in this device and the instructions it came with.  Do you have any suggestions on how to field test to see if I am targeting the right zones?

I'm not familiar with the procedure the Global Trainer uses to calculate HR zones, but generally speaking, I don't put a whole lot of faith in calculations that determine heart rate zones based on age.... Heart rate zones are a very individual thing, and general formulas may over- or under-estimate them on an individual level. They are also sport-specific - i.e., your cycling zones will be different from your running zones.

There are lots of strategies for field testing to determine your zones. This one is as good as any... but it can be a little taxing, and I would suggest you wait to try this unless you're sure you're up for running or riding (if you want to test your bike zones as well) pretty much as hard as you can for 30 minutes. You can always wait a month or two to test. Between now and then, you can wear your heart rate monitor and observe how you you feel at different heart rates. I can pretty much tell by feel now when I move out of zone 3. It's the point where my breathing just begins to get a little heavier, and talking would begin to be a little more difficult. If you're not ready to field test just yet, for now you can experiment a little - wear the monitor and gradually increase your effort until you reach that "little bit hard" point, back off a bit until you're back in a more comfortable zone, and see where your heart rate is. This will probably be pretty close to your LT heart rate, and might be a better estimate for setting your zones.

In looking at your logs an the heart rates for your recent runs, I suspect your zones may be set a little low for you, but again, it's a very individual thing, so it's hard to say for sure.

Well, I had packed my gym bag this morning specifically for a date with the pool this afternoon.  I worked my day so I could leave early and use PTB to go to the gym (the crazy things we do to train) mainly because I really wanted to use my Christmas present - the waterproof case for my ipod shuffle.

Well, while on lunch, I decided to put the shuffle in the case just to see how it worked.  Well, got the two out...fiddled and fiddled...AND IT DIDN'T FIT!

In case I was the only one dumb enough to miss this tiny detail...if a case says it fits the "4th generation shuffle" it won't fit the 2nd gen because the 2nd gen is wider.  So...my whole afternoon plans were shot (yes I'm TOTALLY whining here as I realize I could have gone and swam without my music, like i've been doing since starting this sport) but the point was I was so torked about the case I decided to save my PTB for a better day, went and picked up my kid, and came home to my domestic duties.

And then I shopped on craigslist for a 4th gen shuffle.  I pick it up tomorrow after the gym.

Oh, no. I would have also been disappointed. At least you get a new shuffle.

Good Morning everyone, I got in a 3 mile run this morning in the 38* temps. It was really cold (says the wimpy Floridian with a smile). Actually, I think I could get used to the cold weather running if I could figure out the clothing choices. I actually logged my clothing choices today in an attempt at keeping track of what works and what doesn't.

I hope everyone gets out there and does something today.

Fallon, Good Luck on the swim case!
Felicia, I hope you start feeling better.
Dan, I'm trying to figure out the clothing thing as well, trial and error for me (and really, mine can't be as challenging as the sub freezing you are working through). Good luck with the choices.

Ugh - bad news on the home front.... I just got word from my dad that my step-mom is in the hospital. She was a smoker when she was younger, and now has emphysema. She has a respiratory infection, which is always bad news for her. They have her in intensive care now, but Dad says she seems to be doing better, but he's always a basket case when she gets sick. These kinds of infections really take their toll on her and it takes her a long time to bounce back. I'm more or less on call to head down there (they're in Florida now) to help them out if they say they need me.

I logged my clothes when I started running in the cooler temperatures as well. It took me a couple weeks to figure out what worked best. Then, I think I became acclimated to the cold because what had worked became too much and I overheated. lol

Good morning! I slept well last night, but I'm still feeling a little puny. It's been two weeks now, so I may have to break down and go to the doc to get some drugs. I really wanted to avoid that. But I'm not seeing much improvement.

I need to head off to work soon, but I think I'm going to try to run a little this afternoon if it's not windy and above 40. I keep thinking that the lack of training isn't helping me get better. But really, I just want to run. It's been almost a week.

I hope everyone has a great day today. It's going to be beautiful in central Kansas -- I think my five year old's daycare group is going to the lake this afternoon.
