jsklarz - 2011-12-22 5:37 AM Morning all. Trying to clear the decks of big stuff at work today and tomorrow so next week can be relaxing.... I need to log some time logging wow for the past month to get my logs up to date. Maybe I'll sit on a log while I log. Like a run today. Hoping for a garmim 910 for Hanukkah this year. I also need new aero bars. Maybe race wheels too, we'll see.

You do not need race wheels.  At the Olympic distance it equals maybe a minute.  The only way you're going to beat me is to ride more.

Speaking of holiday gifts.....what kind of tri goodies are you all going to be buying this year (besides clothes)?

Like Jeff, I'm upgrading to the 910 once it's available (when will it be available?).  I'm also investing in some shorty aerobars and new cycling shoes.  I'm putting some decent $$ into the shoes, because I know they'll last forever.  That's about it aside from new tri clothes.  I'm sticking with my sleeveless wetsuit for another season, because I hate wetsuits and don't want to fork out the cash for a sleeved one when half of my races are in 100 degree heat.

Need feed back

37 year old male

Setting Bike HR zones

30 min TT

LAst 20 mins

Average HR 161

Max HR 172

When I did my bike test last year, I just entered in my average HR for the last 20 minutes.  So you would enter in 161, and your zones should calculate from that.

I have read that some people prefer to do bike HR tests and some people do run HR tests.  Is there a difference in results?

x3 on the 910.

maybe some tri clothes as i have yet to find anything that is comfortable.  i road in my bike shorts and changed into running shorts.  if i want to get faster it would be pretty easy by cutting out the wardrobe changes in T1 and T2.

the most inportant part of a wetsuit is the elevation it gives you in your hips, the arms are nice but not needed, i am of the opinion that full sleeve suits are not that much faster then sleeveless.

I too race primarily in a sleeveless, i personally believe you should do all your training sans wetsuit if it is possible, it will make you a better swimmer and when you put it on helps you become more efficient.  If you train in your wettie, you are not getting the full benefits it gives you, it becomes a crutch in training.

my training wheels are pretty heavy, particularly for HIMs.  Yes, i know i have to ride more, and run more and swim more.  But if I do cross fit wont i get faster without all of the above?

no reason for a sleeved suit unless you do a lot of cold water swimming.  I have both and only wear my full when i am swimming in april and may in OWS and the water temp is under 70 (very chilly).  Once the temps get above that i typically dont wear a suit at all (as rudy said a wetsuit is free speed).

No tris until June for me this year.  3 of my tris weren't even wetsuit legal last year due to high temps.  I expect the same this year.  Half Rev Cedar Point is in Sept., and I'm guessing it will be legal, so I'll wear it then.  Won't wear it for the sprint and probably won't be able to wear it for Cleveland oly either.  I think it takes less effort to swim while wearing the suit, but my swim times are the same with or without it (hopefully they'll just be a bit faster this year ).

Most people have a 6 - 14 bpm offset between their bike and heart rate zones.  I'm at a 10 bpm offset.  To have the best results you should do a threshold test on both the bike and the run, but you take a pretty good guess at HR zones if you only do one test.

If your interested (or trying to figure out my logs/workouts) I train almost exclusively based on HR, but my zones are a little different from the traditional Friel Zones:

Zone R (~74% of Threshold): Recovery zone. Used for all recovery rides and runs between key intensity sessions. This takes patience to complete correctly but is critical to being recovered for key workouts. This zone is also used during long rides for stops, and downhills.

Zone 1 (~83% of Threshold): Aerobic endurance zone. Primary zone for all long rides and runs. Typically, early in the season during the base building phase all work is spent in this zone.

Zone 2 (~90% of Threshold): Endurance tempo zone. Zone to be used at the end of long rides and runs following the base phase (typically 8-12 weeks). As the race season draws closer, the amount of time spent in this zone should increase.

Zone 3 (~97% of TH): Threshold tempo zone. Zone to be used for increasing the the percentage of pace or power at which TH occurs relative to VO2 max pace or power. As the race season draws closer, the amount of time spent in this zone should increase.

Best Effort Repeats: The goal of repeats is to increase the body's ability to buffer and tolerate lactic acid, raise the percentage at which AT occurs relative to VO2 max, and improve efficiency. These repeats should only be used during the final 8-12 weeks preceding your major goal race. They are paced to provide a sustainable best effort workout. That is, if you complete 5 x 1 mile repeats, you would do them at the fastest pace you could sustain through all five repeats.

Jeff-y:  Crossfit is God's gift to athletes so yes if double your CrossFit time you smoke Kelly this season.

Goodies:  Need some new goggles, training clothes (all mine are larges and I need a small/medium), some compression gear, and a TRX system.  Asked for swim lessons but I doubt I see them.  Other than the bulk I like my 305.  Would rather just move to a power meter when the opportunity is there.

Jason-  I like both the DeSoto tri shorts and the Nike ones.  Yes Nike.  Surprisingly kick a$$ shorts.  Bought a pair on recommendation of a local KQ guy and LOVE them.

You can build a TRX system with about $15 worth of material from Home Depot.

I hear a lot of people talk about how much they like their DeSoto shorts.  I have to go to the mall and finish shopping for my wife today so I might take a little time for myself and check them out.

Did I mention that I would rather get beaten with a bat than go to a mall...of well.

Running by heart rate is good because it makes you stay under control.  We naturally tend to run our easy  work too hard and hard work too easy  meaning you end up in the  middle for everything, which is understandable.  BUT, whether you go by feel, HR, wattage, etc.  the key is to do the workout correctly.  It is unusual to see a workout call for a medium effort.

a WO of 5 1 mile repeats should  hurt.  5 mile repeats on equal rest at a medium pace are not terribly useful.

For this setup of zones, the "best effort repeats" will likely be >97% of TH?

Obviously it will take a bit for your HR to ramp up when doing say 5x1mile, but it becomes quasi-stable somewhere above 97% right?

Having only one year of Tri experience, I have only experienced the DeSoto Forza, 4 pocket, Tri Shorts. But, I love how they feel and they have held up well. I barely use my bike shorts anymore.

As for goodies, I could use another pair of Tri shorts, some more cycling jerseys, tri tops, Tri bag, aero bars, bike fit.  You name it.  I know people say Tri doesn't have to be expensive, but that's a bunch of BS.  It was an expensive year getting started, and don't see it ever being cheap.

It might get cheaper if I had all the gear I wanted/needed and was just spending on maintenance/replacement and entry fees.

Speaking of holiday gifts.....what kind of tri goodies are you all going to be buying this year (besides clothes)?

No goodies for me this year - I had to get a new wheelset a week before IMAZ so I'm pretty tapped out money wise for tri gear. Husband and I are planning to buy some new furniture for our apartment for Christmas. Probably looking to get a new wetsuit in the new year though.
