CraigS - 2012-01-20 4:20 PM

Thanks.  My #s pale in comparison.  Maybe after a few more years I'll step it up to a HIM.  I want to build a nice base though and I want to get more comfortable in the saddle (25 miles was about all the time I wanted to spend in the saddle last year due to comfort).  After experimenting with various seats (SMP Pro, ISM Adamo) I am now using a saddle from John Cobb that seems to be working for me (at least on the trainer - we'll have to wait and see how it feels when I get it on the road in the Spring).

Everybody is at different levels. The thing is just to be consistent and build slowly.

I need a new saddle. Three hours on the trainer and it gets mighty uncomfortable.

Hi, I would love to join your group. I need a lot of help! You will have to forgive my ignorant questions.

Name: Breanne

Story: I have never done a triathlon, but have been interested the last three years when I heard a lady talking about Try a Tri, then this year I found out a Sprint Triathlon is the same thing other than the 400 more meters to swim (at least at ChelanMan). I am the furthest thing from an athlete right now. I had a baby eight months ago and have not got back on any type of exercising. I want to get in shape and be healthy, so I can be a great mom and wife - be able to keep up with my kids and husband. I want to be challenged and succeed!

Family Status: Married five years, eight month old son, seven year old son on the weekends. Lots of family close - 4 brothers and sisters, 8 nephews and neices, my mom - who is my supporter and partner in this

Current Training: I just decided to do this this week - training is zero at the moment. Spent the week looking into gyms and training schedules - found this site! I have a ton of questions but don't really know what to ask... I have never ran in my life, nor even jogged. I can swim good and did lap swimming before I got pregnant, never worked up to this much though. I have a mountain bike and use to do downhill mt biking on a beginner level - just for one year - a year and a half ago.

2011 Races: Never raced before.

Planned 2012 Races:  ChelanMan July 22nd - Swim 800 meters, Bike 13.1 miles, Run 3.1 miles.

Weightloss: My weightloss goal is 130 - I am currently 168.

Decide - Commit - Succeed!

welcome to the group breanne! Just wanted to let you that you can ask any questions you'd like to have answered...

Where abouts are you in Washington? If you are west of the cascades how are you doing with all this snow and ice?

There are alot of great people in this group with answers for all your questions, good luck and welcome.

Any chance there are still places open for the Mentor Program?

I have never done a Tri, but am planning on doing a Sprint in June. I have many questions.  If there is an opening, I will fill out the bio info!

Thank you!

Subject: RE: Shellback1998 2012 Group OPEN

Darin,

I live in Spokane - lots of snow recently. I think we have about a foot out there - definitily no training happening outdoors. Will be nice in the spring though - Spokane has a lot to offer.

I am not sure what questions to ask exactly... Should I train above and beyond the event I want to do? What is the talk of a target heart zone? Is that important? Do I need to buy a heart rate monitor gadget? Can I use my mt bike for a sprint triathlon? Is it possible to go from nothing to a sprint Triathlon in 20 weeks? One of my fears is the swimming part - so many people starting at the same time, seems like you could get pushed around in the water...? My mom is afraid of the open water part - she is concerned about running into seaweed - has anyone ever come across seaweed? She has a very real fear of the stuff and would freak out and have to be saved by a lifeguard if it came in contact with her.

Well... I think thats enough questions for now. Oh all the training schedules I have found, they have a full day off where you dont do anything - is it important where that day falls in my schedule? The one I really like it falls on a Thursday but is there any reason I couldn't move that to a Saturday? Is there a reason for training schedules to be the way they are? As far as days between swimming, running, biking, resting... I wasn't sure how much I could move it around to fit my life.

Thank you - all of you for your answers. I am excited to start training for a triathlon!

Breanne

Yes you can use your mtn bike for your race. However if this something you plan to continue doing I'd look into getting a road bike but after you are convinced this is something you wanted to do. Training with your heart keeps you honest and you won't over train. There was an article posted earlier. Nice read and you can see what we are talking about. Not required but definitely something that could benefit you in the long run. Especially when trying to have weightlossWith the water, if you are afraid start in the back of the field. When the whistle blows count to 10 then start your swim. Your mother, might not want to do an ocean swim. Unless she can get over that fear.Great questions!

Something else that I forgot to mention. Try a rowing machine at the gym as well That also builds up leg strength. Well, if you were sore for a week, I'm guessing you over did it a tad... You know recovery day does not mean rest day right? As long as we cover that. When I am full throttle training, I think I get one day off per month... The recovery day's can be an easy swim, easy bike keeping the heart rate low. Just to get the blood moving. Help facilitate the repair of your muscles. Anyway what kind of trainer did your littlest sister get you?

It's a fluid trainer; not here yet, so I don't really know anything about it yet.  And yes, I'd overdo it on weights.  I'm going to try again today, focusing on NOT overdoing it, to see if I can get a handle on it.  I'm also going to be doing an aerobic straight swim afterward, so hopefully that will help as well.  I've been cleared for short time on the elliptical, so perhaps that can be my recovery day now.

Week totals:

26 miles ran (on treadmill) incline mostly at 1.5, .5 for my 3 mile pace run.

295 minutes of spin classes

2 body pump classes (weight lifting)

I can't seem to convince myself to swim. The pool is indoors, but always really cold. Even in the summer it's hard to jump in. When it's snowing and windchill is below zero it's awfully hard to walk the mile to the pool and go for a swim... I'm hoping to convince myself just to do it by February.

My nutrition plan is also getting better. Today I did a spin class, ate half a banana, and then did another spin class and I didn't loose steam like I did last week. I noticed lots of tri-suits in my class this morning- makes me feel like I'm picking the right instructors to get me in tri shape.

Ok this is an awkward question, but I need to ask somewhere.

What do larger chested women do for tri-suits? I have to be very particular about what running bra I use or I chafe so much I bleed through my shirt (even with enormous amounts of body glide). I haven't seen a single Tri-top (or swimsuit) that even comes close to enough support. Is it common to have to change to a sports bra after the swim?

I have asked a few of my friends this question. However I would say get a one piece and have it be darker colors. I have had a friend who bleed from the nipples but when used body glide solved that. I'll let you know what my friends say

good luck, hope that helps.

Yesterday got a massage for my hip and glute.  2 more sessions left so we'll see if it does anything for my bursaitis.

after the massage I hit the pool and decided to switch things up a bit.  I didn't have a time crunch so I did 10 lengths easy, 5x50 hard, 10 easy, 5x50 hard, 10 easy.  That is the most i've swam in one day to date so i'm pretty happy about it.  However! I had my calves (BOTH OF THEM) cramp up on me like crazy towards the end.  Pretty brutal.

Today deadlifts, overhead press.

Despite the 6-ish inches of snow, which soaked my shoes and leggings up to my mid-calf... I had a great 3 mile run today.  Slower than I would have liked, but oh well.  Turns out that running on a sidewalk in fresh snow, with plowed snow spray across it from the road is like running on a sandy beach... so it was a pretty good work out.

How are the West Coaster's doing with all of their snow?

It worked.  I made a conscious effort to stay within my bounds and not overdo the weight training--three sets max and mostly two (10-15 reps depending on the machine) and doing a try or two then re-setting weight if my first choice wasn't working.  I did quite a few different machines and some non-machine stuff, but I'm not sore today.  I can feel that I worked, especially between my shoulder blades, but no pain!

Although not running really bothers me, the elliptical fatigued my left side, so I assume it's forcing me to stay more even and therefore working the weak side, which is a definite plus.

I've been running on a "strength training twice a week" assumption--is that reasonable?

You're braver than I am. I actually think running in the snow would be fun just like you describe. I just don't trust the drivers out there not to run me over. I might try some trail runs in the snow.

I did 3:15 on the trainer this morning. 60.55 miles, 223 average watts, 288 max watts, 133 average heart rate, 155 max heart rate and 95 average cadence. I nearly quit so many times. Just kept playing the mental games to keep myself on a few minutes at a time. Once I hit two hours it click in and the last 1:15 was so much easier than the first two hours. So much of this sport is the mental aspect.

Thank you for letting me join. I have been wondering if I made the cut off all day.  Here is more information about me.

Name: Christi

Story: I have never done a triathlon but have read the magazine for years *Grin*  I completed my first 5k in October and was looking at a fun one in Chicago in June when a girlfriend asked me to join her in the Sprint Triathlon in Naperville, IL on June 10.  I stressed out, worried, hoped and finally agreed.  So, here I am.  I am 5'10-11" and close to 250 lbs.  I had my 2nd baby 8 months ago and am hoping that the triathlon training will help me lose weight.  I am a lacto-ovo vegetarian and plan to log food on MyFitnessPal.com.  I have been using them off and on and their database has all the vegetarian foods I eat.  A few events have happened in the last month which make NOW the time for me to do this.  Lost 2 friends to cancer on the first.  A friend, her Mother in Law and StepMother In Law were all diagnosed with cancer.  A girlfriend from High School lost her father 2 nights ago due to heart attack.  He was only 58.  A friend from HS lost his mother yesterday to cancer and my mother had a heart incident in December (she is 59).  NOW is the time because who knows what we will learn tomorrow. So sorry for the bad news there.  Just wanted to share why now.

Family Status: Married 4ish years, 3.5 year old son and 8 month old daughter. I am an older mom as I am 35 years old. I married late, had kids late and am apparently late to the Triathlon world *Grin*

Current Training: I did Couch25K and did my first 5k in October.  Been doing treadmill and weights 3-ish times a week off and on over the holidays.  Lost 40-ish lbs since baby born 8 months ago doing this and watching my intake of calories.

2011 Races: First 5k October

Planned 2012 Races: SHErox - Sunday June 10, 2012, Centennial Beach, Naperville IL

 .75K (.5 mile) swim, 22.8K (14.2 mile) bike, 5K (3.1 mile) run

Weightloss: I would like to weigh 190 and currently weigh 248

Currently my questions center around nutrition. I am lost and clueless as to how to balance out the changes in my schedule, changes in activity levels and what my body will now need.  I did order a book online, but it isn't here yet.

Tomorrow morning I begin the training with 50m swim and then I think 3 mile bike ride.  I am not knowledgeable on swimming.   Are there suggested ways to swim which are better for doing this?  I figure I better start out on the right "foot" in swimming because it is the one I dread the most.

I guess that is a lot.  Working on my visualization board tonight - has my gym hours, training schedule for the week, distances for each leg of the race and other things to keep me motivated. I am pretty excited.

OH - I really really really want to buy a heart rate monitor but freeze every time I look them up.  I just don't want to pick wrong and there are so many different options.  I just kind of shut down.  Any suggested sites to figure out which one is best for me?  Any hints and tips for operations/options are best for newbies?  Any suggestions for best fit for a larger person?

Welcome Christi, ok, with your HRM try to get a POLAR or GARMIN, just two that I"m most familiar with you and I find that they give the most accurate readings. You'll be busy training with these and it will keep you honest to make sure you aren't over training for this triathlon.

Congrats on doing the C25k, how did you do? Did you follow the plan? Are you good at structured plans? What kind of bike do you have?

Congrats on doing the C25k, how did you do? Did you follow the plan? Are you good at structured plans? What kind of bike do you have?

I followed the plan through week 7 out of 9 because that is when the 5k was in relation to when I started the plan.  I think I am good at structured plans.  Since I don't know what I am doing I feel that I need to follow something.  I tend to make my own up when I know how to do something correctly, so in the future I will most likely deviate.

The plan I currently have has me swim 3 times a week, bike 3 times and run 3 times. It starts out slow and then builds in duration until the race.

On the bike - I am borrowing one from my mom. I don't currently own one and due to snow/ice I will be doing a stationary bike for a few months until the weather cooperates. I pick up the bike from my mom mid-Feb, then I will know more about it.
