DDVMM - 2012-04-05 10:24 PMSilly question - I was just reading a post in the TT forum - it says no underwear under bike shorts?  I usually don't but didn't know  you shouldn't. So, why not? And do you go commando?
I love these questions. Do you really want a lot of sweaty cotton in your crotch while on the bike? Let me give you a word: chaffing. Most tri or bike shorts have a liner and shammy to provide a little padding, so yes, commando it is.

I have a question too.  For those that ride a trainer -

I just recently started using my tri bike on the trainer, I resisted for a long time and just had my road bike set up on there.  Since I'm doing a lot more trainer rides I figured I better start using the bike I'm going to race with.  So, my question is, am I think only one that can't get comfortable in aero position on a trainer?  I have been so uncomfortable, I have to stand up and move around, settle back down, stand up again in 10 minutes, repeat.  Yet when I'm outside riding I could be aero for hours so I know it's not the set up.  I'm just not comfortable on the trainer.  I thought it might be the riser block I have for the front tire.  I dropped it from the highest to the lowest, and that helped some but I'm still not comfortable.

Anyone else get uncomfortable?

Yes. With a disc herniation, I rarely ride areo except in races and just enough to be able to be in arero.

karen26.2 - 2012-04-05 12:47 PM Jen - DeSoto is my favorite line for tri clothing.  I used to be a huge 2XU fan, but have switching over to DeSoto.  Orca makes some nice things too (tops are long which I need with my height and super long torso).  If you have not checked out DeSoto I highly recommend it.

I've heard lots of women who used to be DeSoto fans say that this and perhaps last year's line of gear doesn't fit well.  I think some of the complaint though is due to the fact it doesn't cover/support the midsection well.

Well, I only have 2 years ago and prior, so that might explain it.  I have not tried on any recent things, but thanks for the heads up.  They hold up really well so I have not had to replace anything but was getting ready to order some new tri shorts.

My training buddies and I did order DeSoto custom kits last year for Wisconsin and they are awesome as far as quality, printing, and fit.  Even though we didn't order the "minimum" requirement, they worked with us and we were very happy with the customer service and final product.  The custom pieces are not the same as what you get off the rack.

That was the question I had a couple days ago. Where can you find some of this cool gear/tri kits. Not one pieces either. I'm tires of the just plain black shorts and a solid color top. Anyone have some sites that sell this stuff ?

A couple of places do custom kits but they usually require some type of minimum.  I've seen custom work by LG, DeSoto, Champion Systems and Kiwami.  I've also seen specific designers do one-off custom work (Betty Designs, which I love). Ordering one is usually tough and expensive.

There's also the option of joining one of the tri clubs in CT and ordering their gear.  There's HEAT, Team Mossman, Shoreline Sharks.  All of them have their own custom kits.

No underwear under tri or bike shorts.  They're designed to work without underwear and when you wear underwear with them it causes chafing.  It may not be bad for a 10 mile ride but for longer rides its miserable.  Plus, if you're wearing underwear its going to be a lot harder to pee on the bike.

The position of the bike to the ground is different on the trainer than it is on the road (even if you use riser blocks) so aero feels different on the trainer compared to the road.  I almost never ride aero on the trainer.  As long as you're going to have plenty of time to ride outside before Vineman (which you will) I wouldn't worry aboutn staying aero in your trainer sessions in April.

Morning, all!  Yesterday was crazy.  Finally got to the pool at 7:30 and didn't leave the gym until 9:30.  Up at 5 for a Z1 trainer ride, and then I'll have to squeeze in a run sometime this morning.

My pulmonologist started me on Advair, and I'm curious as to how this will affect my HR the next couple weeks.  Picking up the disc later.  We'll see.

Its going to push you HR up a bit (not as much as a rescue inhaler but a little bit).  I find its best to use the inhaler first thing and give my HR a little time to settle down before training.

Nice, easy, relaxed spin on the trainer this morning just to get the blood flowing in the legs.  Felt good actually.  Probably helped that I ate my tail off yesterday.  BTW I hate that I'm one of the few people I know working today.  When a drive that on a normal day takes an hour and a halfish takes under 30 minutes you know you're the only joker working.  (I use the term working very loosely.)

I definately get more uncomfortable than on the road but I think it's easier to shift around on the road. Also on the road on steep hils I might raise out of the seat or stretch my calves out, etc. On the trainer you don't do that because it stops your momentum. The good thing is the trainer gets you used to perpetual effort.

That said when I went to get my bike tuned up for the new season I invested in a new saddle and in the process they ended up raising my seat a full inch and I have to say that has made a huge difference. I used to struggle staying in aero on the trainer for more than 5 minutes at a time. Now I can go an entire 3 hour ride and the only time I come out is to catch a sip of water or grab a gel.

Hour on the trainer in my recovery zone and then 35 minutes at the pool focusing on form and drills for 1500 yards. I honestly have come to love days like today so much more than a day off. I generally come back from a day off feeling stiff and tight. I almost always have a great workout the day after a training day like today and right now I feel awesome.

Another HR question for Kelly, and probably a silly question but...

I get you post on ZR, Z1 & Z2, thanks for explaining that.  I agree it's simpler to not have 5 zones.  But, how would you suggest setting up the zones on BT?  I set mine up based on your calculations from the test I did.  But I also felt like I needed to enter in a Z3, Z4, etc.  So I did, and just made each zone about 10 bpm.  If I only put in through Z2 then any time my HR goes over (yes, I know I'm not supposed to) it will not capture that in the graphs.  Should I leave them as is, or make Z3 the last one that picks up where Z2 left off, and put the top of that zone at 200 or some # that I know I'll never go over?

Not sure that's clear, so here's what I currently have set up on BT - should Z3 be 165 - 200 instead of how I have it below?

So I finished up my first attempt at being my own bike monkey last night as I have no Shaun.  Swapped out the front derailleur.  Broke off 2 replacement pins putting the chain back together, but the 3rd worked out.

I have a question since we are on heart rate. The half marathon I just ran my average HR was 170 and for the second half it was 175. I really feel like without the knot in the calf it probably would have been closer to 178-180 for the second half. But for the sake of argument lets use the 175. How would you set up your zones?

Current I use for running:

Recovery: 110-123

Z1: 124-136

Z2 137-153

Z3 154-163

Z4 164-175

Z5 176-190

I've hit over 200 before but use 190 as a point I've maintain.

For the bike I use:

Recovery 103-117

Z1 118-131

Z2 132-144

Z3 145-155

Z4 156-167

Z5 168-182

I've also hit 200 on the bike but I've maintained 182 for a distance.

I know these are probably close but there's so many formulas and methods I always question if it's right.

Usually your average HR for the entire half marathon is about 5 bpm above the top of what I call Z2 (usually a half marathon will start at the top of Z2 and maintain pace while allowing he HR to drift upward).  So if you use that formula, the top of your Z2 (tempo) would be about 165.  Working backwards, the top of your Z1 would be about 155, with a Z1 range of about 141-155 or so.  Usually I wont use a half marathon to set HR zones, but rather to corroborate HR zones that were set with a shorter LT test.

What really matters is that you use HR to make sure that your easy workouts are easy and that your hard work outs are hard.  Exact numbers aren't super important.

Just using your half marathon data, I would say most of your aerobic training should be in the 141-155 zone, your tempo work in the 156-166 zone and then intervals/speed work at your best sustainable pace regardless of heart rate.

I would put Z3 as 165+ and not worry about having anything for Z4 or Z5.  You HR will go into and above Z3, but in those type of speed work/interval situations the focus is on sustainable effort rather than HR.

Easy 1500m in the pool this am then a brisk 5 mile run.  No work today, but lunch at Red Lobster (ugh!!) for my son's 7th birthday -- he loves the cheesey biscuits!

I am a total Pearl Izumi gal head to toe.  Love their tops -- never any issue with not fitting right or chafing under the arms and their shorts work great..I do have a pair of Zoot that I trade off with (but their pretty short so I usually just wear those for sprints).

Looks like mild weather here for the weekend so long ride tomorrow before Little league and then a long run between church and going to my MIL for caloric overload (not by choice..my MIL puts sugar and salt on everything and believes massive amounts of melted cheese on everything is good for you...it is made of milk!!)

Happy EAster everyone!

Good luck.

I did three hours on the trainer on a day where the legs didn't want to do it. I'm sure I'm not the only one who plays the mental games to keep on making it 5 more minutes at at time.

At least your done!  I've got 3:45 on the trainer and I have not started yet.  Drinking coffee, surfing the net, procrastinating...

I'm going to try moving my bike into a different room in the basement where the big big screen TV is and try watching movies.  I had a little TV in the other room, but it's hard to hear so I usually just listened to music.  Wish me luck!

Good luck! Yes I'm psyched I'm done but I also had to get up at 4:30 to get it in before I run the girls to their soccer games. I get up between 4:20-5 all week so it's not a huge deal but I soooooo could have slept in today.

Our big screen in the family room in the basement just had a switch go on it that I have to repair so I couldn't even put on a cycling video or movie. I put on digital radio which was fine but I don't blame you for going the visual route. I could have used the distraction today.

Had a nice long run of 1:20 today. Forgot my HRM at work so had to do a manual test every mile or so. Really tried to stay in Z1 but I am realizing how hard it can be to stay there but I kept telling myself it will pay off. Hope everyone else has a great workout day. I will get my stuff uploaded once I get back to VA.
