I'd happily run the hill 3 times if it meant I got the original course where I would see my family 6 times. I am not happy with this change. It will be fine just not what I was anticipating. Seeing my people is big for me.

Your family/friends will get to see you just as much on the 2-loop course. They can watch you come out of T2, walk 1/2 mile to curry hill and watch you there, then repeat. There's multiple other ways to do it too. You'll be fine

Does anyone know if they are going to change the swim start to some type of TT start. I know they are modifying IMFL this year and a lot of other IM events?

The new route, as I understand it- exit T2 and head EAST toward mcclintock, then double back to priest, head north, then east along the north bank toward rural, do the curry hill loop, then back to do it again. No map released yet
Where did you get the info? I didn't find it anywhere on the net......Sounds better than doing 3 loops, especially after doing 3 bike loops.....

I live in PHX and train with several groups here. I've heard this from several different folks over the last month so it's a poorly kept secret. Someone close to IM confirmed it to me yesterday and said the official announcement will be made soon.

I don't see how a rolling or tt style start would work in Tempe Town Lake. But stranger things have happened, right?

I did read that IMAZ would still be a mass swim start this year.

I did the rolling start at the Boulder 70.3. It worked really well, I thought.

I think they could still do it, just not the way they do it now. They could have bouys out, or kayaks saying if you swim X fast line up here. As far as chip time though it'd would still start at cannon.

Biggest problem I guess is people not seeding themselves properly. Too many slow people lining up, up front.

Last year I seeded myself on the outside a good distance back from the line. I was looking at a 1:30 swim, well for the first 10 minutes I was running into the back of people and having to go around them. Eventually it smoothed out, until the turnaround, then clear again. Then conjestion again turning back to shore, some guy started clubing me trying to swim over me, I was like come on dude, no need to sprint now, we've been out here an hour and a half.

So this is how I'm going to improve my run time over last year. will it give me the 50 minutes I was looking for?

I could be wrong but it seems like IM is really trying to go away from mass swim starts. Even if they haven't announced anything yet, I would be surprised if they do the usual IMAZ mass start. Pure speculation on my part.

I did Oceanside 70.3 this past March and they do a wave start. I thought it was great and wouldn't mind seeing that here. Not sure if you can do that with 2,800 contestants and a midnight cutoff...

I guess they could make us jump off that paddle boat rental place, they have 5 short docks going out looking at it from satelite. Put a turn bouy about 30 yards out before turning east.

I know this wouldn't be ideal, but who knows what the could come up with, the thing I hate about people jumping off things is you know there are those people who like to jump in then adjust googles etc for a minute before they start swimming. Another thing triathletes cant do, jump in and be swimming lol.

Anywho, probably not likely for 2800 people

It'd probably take 45 minutes to get everyone in like that at 1 every 5 seconds.

Another thing I like to get in about 10 min before hand to just sit and float and adjust to the water. Believe it or not, last year just floating waiting for the start was really relaxing. I even had a few laughs watching the people standing on the ledge waiting.

Ohh, and they do have the boat ramp at the marina as well. I don't want to see it go this way, but they could look at it.

I think they jump off a dock for IM Louisville. At least they used to do it that way. The problem a few years ago was that participants would have their family/friends wait in line a couple hours early. I heard people were starting waiting in line as early as 4am, to save a spot. Just what I heard/read

I say we start the 2013 IMAZ by jumping of the Mill Ave Bridge into TTL.

Is this Heaven? No, it's Iowa.
Subject: RE: Ironman Arizona : Official Thread

So when does everyone start their IM training plans???

Just kidding!!!  It's sooooo frickn hot in the Midwest (at least in Iowa) now.  97 with humidity pushing heat indexes into the 110s.  Sounds like desert training to me....

One more Olympic race to get through, Hy Vee this weekend, and it's all Ironman training from here on in.  Still pulling in some speed work sessions, but looking forward to long Zone 2 workouts.

Oh, and in Iowa, we will most likely get to finish our last 5 weeks inside on the trainer assuming Mother Nature turns the thermostat down into the below 20s again in October.

Keep on working hard gang!!!!

83 days.

Last year IMAZ was my first and this year will be my second IM.

Trying to remember what I put in there.

Bike, Spare tube and 2x CO2 (didnt need it) - special mixed bottle for nutrition - powerbar and a pop tart - a couple emergency gels if it looked like the bottles were going to fast.

Run, special mix bottle, a hand full of pringles, a couple gels

What I maybe could have put in, maybe some vaseline or something like that for chaffing on the run.

This is my first IM but here's my tentative plan for SN's -

Bike -
* Nutrition - For me, this includes Infinit, Fig Newton's, pretzels, Powerbars, and possibly a PB&J.
* Chamois Cream - Duh...
* Body Glide - In case anything on tri kit is rubbing.
* Small can of spray sunscreen
* Two tubes, 3 cO2 cartridges - A must with the Beeline involved.

Run -
* Nutrition - Gu, Gu Roctane, spare gel flask, Power Bar Energy Chews
* Socks
* Body Glide
* BioFreeze
* Might bring a second pair of running shoes. I did Oceanside 70.3 this year and my shoes were water logged from dousing myself at aid stations. Can't imagine running another 13.1 miles with my shoes in that condition. It was hot that day but I don't see heat being an issue on the run at IMAZ.

With all the money and time we've put into training for this race, I'm not cutting any corners when it comes to my special needs bags. I might not even use either but I would be so bummed if I didn't put something in their that I needed. I don't care if the items above get tossed so I'm going all out.

Got the wife and 3 kids airfare booke through Allegiant.

$375

That's $375 total, not each.

Direct flight.

They do charge extra for baggage though, but since I'm driving out 3-4 days earlier I'll have all that stuff with me, along with the dog.

I've seen a handful of other people putting "Gu" in their run special needs bag. If Gu gels/Roctane gels are offered on the course, is there a particualr reason why you would add them to your special needs bag? Is it because you like a particular flavor? I know some people don't use Gu and put other brands of gel in there, I get that.

As far as my special needs bags, here is what I am thinking right now:

Bike -
Extra gel flask (4 gels)
Something solid (probably Clif Builder bar and Honey Stinger Waffle/s)
Sunscreen (Coppertone Sport SPF 50 in a travel size bottle)
Tri Slide
Extra Chamois cream (DZ Nutz or Bag Balm)
Spare tubes and CO2 cartridges
Maybe a 5hr Energy shot
Extra Salt Tabs (in case I lose any during the ride)
Gum

Run -
Second pair of shoes and socks.
Tri Slide
Long sleeve shirt (just in case)
Extra Salt Tabs
Gum

I think that's it

I've been training with Perform and Gu. So once my Perform runs out on the bike, I'll just stock up at an aid station. I'll have the extra gel flask already mixed with Gu and water in my bike SN bag, so I won't have to stop for gels. I'll most likely snag a couple bananas at a bike aid station. I would LOVE to put a PB&J sandwich in there. But, peanut butter gives me wicked heartburn if I eat it right before/during cardio workouts.....usually on the run. But I do NOT want to tempt fate and have heartburn the rest of the day. So no peanutt butter anything for me

On the run, I'll "live off the course" for the most part. Water, Coke, Perform, Gu, and ice will be on hand at the aid stations. I'll have my Fuelbelt with 2 bottles of water in my T2 bag. Just in case I need a little sumthin' sumthin' between aid stations

Whoa, you guys are putting a lot of stuff in there! Not planning on stopping for mine unless something goes wrong out there! I'm assuming everything I put in there will be lost, so I'd rather go with just enough to get by on.

Bike:
2 spare tubes
c02 inflator, 2 c02's
Spare feed bottle in case feed bottle is lost
chamois creme

Run:
body glide/chamois creme packet
small suncreen
couple spare gels
waterproof bandaids

Of course, if temps decide to be below 50 or above 80, or possibly pouring rain. all of this could change. Hoping for good weather!
-Arm warmers, cycling vest, rain jacket, spare running shoes, socks, etc are all possible in that case

Another question:
Do you lug your pump in the AM or will there be plenty to use to air up tires?

Like you, I'm planning on using course nutrition on the run. Main reason being I don't want to lug stuff around for hours.

I'm packing Roctane flavors that I like in SN's in case they don't have them on the course. Again, I'm being extremely cautious by packing all this stuff but its worth it to me. I don't like gels so I want to be sure at least have the flavor I can choke down.
