Thank you vets!!

I took a rest day Friday but was supposed to ride 2hrs.
There was an emergency call at work and I was freezing, wet, hungry, and tired by the time I got home yesterday evening.

So I know what I'm doing today.
Long run and ride. Hopefully one will be outside.
And pressure washing my deck.

Tomorrow to try out the wetsuit?

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Just another exciting Saturday at our house:Quick bike ride, stripped the Chlorine out of my hair, got out the crack pipe, aired up a few wheels. Now its time to go shopping at my favorite running store.

Happy Memorial Weekend everyone!

No workout for me yesterday, as was traveling, but I did get a nice 5k in this morning.   Only bad part... I left HRM Strap at home by mistake, so had to run without it this morning.   Had the Garmin with me, so that was good, but I can sure tell I've gotten into the habit of running to HR.  I ran to RPE this morning, and sadly, went out too fast and ended up walking a bit.  Not complaining though.  Temp was near perfect for the run, my average pace was faster than I've been doing, and so all things considered, and the fact I ate like a pig yesterday, I feel good about the run.  Just got to stop walking....

Enjoy Memorial Day, and as others have said, thanks to all those who have served our country!  But even more important, is thanks to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the country.  We need to never forget them.

Got a 53 mile ride in this morning...saddle felt good for about 40 miles before my bony parts started to protest. I made a few adjustments along the way moving the saddle around, and think I'm pretty close to where I need to be. I had some moments where the saddle seemed to disappear like Rene says it should. The good news is that that 2 weeks, my sit bones were protesting around mile 30...so I must be making progress. At least my soft tissue is HAPPY!

After my ride, I dropped my bike off at the shop for the Felt recall that it appears I'm part of. Frieda (that's my bike), looked rather sad when I said goodbye, and she said she'd miss me over the long weekend...but then I saw how she was looking at the Trek sitting next to her (who was in for a tune up for the season), and I knew I will not be missed. She'd better behave herself!

No idea how long it'll take to pull the part, call Felt, get the new part shipped, install the new part and tune up my bike. I REALLY hope to have it back by Friday. If not, guess I'll be swimming and running all week.

Came home to a box from Sherri's Berries on my doorstep. Mother-in-law remembered my birthday is Tuesday.

All is well at the beach. Made the 40 mile ride without mishap. Did an OWS and then some boat riding and "rehydrating." Sitting on the screened porch after a nice nap. Probably some serious cornhole competition later. ????

Cornhole competition?  Is this a southern term?

First outdoor ride done.  Only 1:20, but it felt good.  In fact, I am really happy that I'm not cranking out 6 hour rides like some of our IM will be doing soon.  Hit the boat afterwards and now we're heading to a "pour-out" party.  We have some friends who are moving and want all of their open bottles of booze gone so they don't have to pack them.  Did I mention that their family room focal point is a 15 foot bar?

Well, my training plan had me do a full OLY worth over the past two days... And I feel great actually had my swim test and a long bike ride Fri. And then a 6mi run yesterday. Today I'm just going for an easy spin before tearing into next weeks training

Idk if anyone else feels this way, but the more I train, the more I feel I'm better suited to long course vs. Short course... I just feel like I can hit a nice rhythm and go all day, but when I try to do high intensity stuff to prepare for my sprint, I feel like I have no power whatsoever... Anyone else with me on this? Or is this something that will change with experience?

Skipped my long bike and did a hilly run and descent at a local ski resort Saturday.
This was supposed to be my lsd run, but I ended up really pushing the ascent.
Feel like I used the same muscle groups as on the bike.

Had to break out some ice when I got home on the quads and hams to prevent soreness.
Worked great. I just have some expected fatigue.

Hope to get that long bike in today after a swim.

Sometimes the more I train the more I feel I'm better suited to watching Jerry Springer all day on the couch while eating candy .
Other times I feel like I could just keep running acround the world.

Gary...have to ask because of your screen name. JUST a ski bum, or did you also work in the ski industry? I was a ski instructor at Deer Valley for a handful of years after I graduated college before I had to move back east and get a 'real' job.

I have a couple of questions for you all today:

1. Helmets. A tri friend of mine was riding his bike back in March on a heavy traffic road (a road I would NEVER have ridden on, but...). He was traveling through a light and a motorist was making a left turn, didn't see him, and turned directly into his path. Richard T-boned the car. He woke up 17 days later. He'd broken his arm in multiple places, broken ribs and collapsed lung, ruptured his spleen, broken bones in his face, head trauma and then he had a stroke. He remembers nothing of the accident and once released from the ICU locally, is now in a rehab center in Atlanta.

We were talking helmet safety yesterday, and there sure is a lot of information out there about how useless helmets really are in that type of incident. Anyhow, I want to replace my 'cheapish' Specialized helmet that I currently wear for something that might protect my noggin a bit more. I was looking at the MIPS technology that is beginning to emerge (I think Scott and Lazer are the only two companies making helmets with this).

Question is: What do you think is the best helmet for our sport? Obviously when it's 98 degrees, you've got to have the ventilation, but is there really any type of 'rating' to which helmets are supposed to conform? When I rode horses competitively, we were required, in competition, to wear a helmet that minimally met an ASTM code. Does something like that exist in bicycle helmets?

2. Heart rate monitors--I've had ENOUGH of my heart rate monitor strap rubbing me raw on my breastbone. I've tried all of DC Rainmaker's fixes, swapped straps, used glide and a gazillion other lubes, but any run over 5 miles, it digs in and slices me. A friend suggested the Mio Link which is worn on your wrist and measures your heartrate through the blood volume in the vessels in your wrist using some sort of sophisticated algorithms. It also uses bluetooth or ANT+ to connect to the device you're using for GPS.

Anyone have one/seen one/used one? Your thoughts??? I'm about to give up on using heart rate in training again because the strap is KILLING me!

Jeez...sorry to hear about your friend. I'm scared to death while riding on the roads.
Most of my bike is on the trainer.
It makes me afraid when I'm driving and I see people texting and doing whatever that distracts them.

I also have no input on your other questions. I use HRM with a strap. No issues up to 13.1 so far.

RE: Ski Life: I have worked in the ski industry for the past 11 years doing just about everything. I recently gave up a full time year round ski resort job and now work seasonally at the resorts.
I consider myself a backcountry skier who bides his time on the chair lift when the woods are out.

My summer job just gave me a promotion (this week). It may be the thing I do all year now.
I will still volunteer for an adaptive ski school as an instructor at least once a week.

My wife constantly reminds me that I need to get a 'real job' and I remind her that those jobs don't give out free ski passes or allow skiing mid week.

Also: First OWS of the season with the new wetsuit.
Thanks Jason. It worked great. Two caps, vaseline, and warm water inside.
I haven't been swimming in 2 months and after the 1/2 mile I was glad to be done.
Giving the suit a real test tomorrow in a really cold local lake.

Gary- where are you swimming that it is so cold?

Nancy- I can't even remember what type of road helmet I have. 99% of my rides are on the trainer. I basically ride outside for races only. Which is kind of funny as I came from a cycling background. It just seems like there are more cycling accidents now than there were even a few years ago.

Suzy- nice ride. Looks like your recovery is coming along nicely.

 - If you figure out how to go hard during a sprint please let me know. I'm still working on pushing hard and going fast. Just once I'd like to be able to cross the finish line and not have anything left. So far I haven't been able to go to the point of no return during a race. Mentally I was prepared to push the run today during the race. Instead I struggled with breathing problems and couldn't push the pace.

I raced today and got 1st place AG. I also had the fastest female bike split of the race. Which is something that I'm really excited about.

Swim and run still need some work. I'll try to write up a race report and put it on my blog tomorrow.

My half marathon was a bit of a bust today.  I was hoping to go under 1:30 but I didn't have the legs today and finished just under 1:36.  No real reason that I can identify, just had a bad day.  The only upside is that I can now run a 1:36 HM on a bad day while it wasn't all that long ago that I had to bust my azz to do a 1:49.

I'll be doing up a RR but here is the Strava file.  http://www.strava.com/activities/145544592

Suzy-the "pour-out" party sounds fun. And dangerous.

Arend- very nice work on your HM. 1:36 is right around 7:20 pace, right? That is moving right along.

Rene- an age group win and fastest female bike split. Very well done. Your swim and run musts have been ok.

Nancy- every helmet sold in America has to meet certification standards. They aren't that stringent but they do exist. I agree that in a truly catastrophic collision, they might not do much, but what if your friend didn't have the helmet on? It probably saved him from even worse, but who knows. I can't ride a bike without a helmet on just like I can't drive my car without the seatbelt. I just can't do it. I know that there are new technologies out there but I haven't looked in to them too much. I have two everyday helmets, a Rudy Project and a Bell. They are both well ventilated and comfortable. I wear a Rudy Wingspan for racing.

I hear you on the heart rate strap. My Garmin soft strap always bugged me. About a year ago I just stopped wearing it. I don't use heart rate as a metric while training or racing so it hasn't been a huge loss for me but if you are heart rate training it would be a big deal. I actually find the older plastic straps to be more comfortable. The Garmin soft strap is very sharp along the edges. Can you sync your watch with a different strap? If so, it might be worth trying something different. REI has a 100% satisfaction guarantee if you want to try something different to see if it works for you

I have really not worked out all week. It has been nice. I have done a lot of yard work. Last I will likely get done for the next couple months. I did have a swim lesson today that was productive and tomorrow I need to actually start training again. Should be fun. I'm not sure my wife is ready for me to get back at it.

Some great results are starting to pour in....congrats to Rene and Arend!

I use the old fashioned hard Garmin Heart Rate strap and have only had an issue once when I ran a marathon in pouring rain and it rubbed me raw.  The key for me is having a tight sports bra to hold it in place.  While I'm not a slave to HR, I find it an important metric for training and racing.

Congrats, Arend!  Great race.  I get that feeling you have when you miss the goal by just a short amount.  I'm forever going to be working to get my 1:59:59 half under my belt.  So far closest has been 2:00:18.  Last race -- which I thought for sure would make the goal sounds a lot like yours.   Training pacing had me coming in about 1:55 -- Ended up at about 2:06.  Was a bummer.   You did great!

RE:  HRM Strap.  I'm tending to agree with the group here.  I just upgraded from a Garmin 305 - with the older version 'standard' Chest Strap.  I thought I'd like the new 'soft strap' that came with the 910XT is just got.  Nope.  The old standard strap is MUCH more comfortable.  Don't know if there is any difference in the sensitivity, but it is much more comfortable on me than the new one.   You can still get one of them from Garmin, and it will sync with a Garmin.   Might want to give that a try

Hi Gang:

Short, very uncomfortable run for me today.  Plan was 5k, ended up doing on 2 miles.  Low back was screaming at me by about a mile and a half in.  Anyone have any ideas on how to help get rid of that?   I know what caused it, so I suspect it's mostly just fatigue from standing for nearly 18 hours over the past couple of days singing in a recording session, but I sure could use some advice on how to stretch it out or something.

Planning 3 more runs, a swim and bike this week.  Maybe I can get my pace down on the run a bit.

Uncomfortable runs must be 'du jour' today. I managed to get 5 miles in, but it certainly wasn't pretty. It was the roughest run I've had in a really long time. There was a lot of 'self talk' going on inside my head.

Re: HRM strap- I have a 310xt with the new soft strap and I have not had any problems. I have, however, seen people put a bandaid in the strap itself right where the sensor clips into the strap. This prevents the sensor from pressing the ends of the strap into the chest too much... Seems like it works for them, but I haven't had a problem so I haven't tried it myself.

Speaking if HRM's and Technology... I've been trying to figure out what to use on the bike portion of my Tri. I have a 310xt but I don't want to have to deal with taking it off in transition (even with the "quick" release kit). I only need to see cadence and HR while on the bike, so I was wondering if anyone knows of a cycling computer that does ANT+ on the cheep so it would work with my sensors I already have. I would love to have a Garmin Edge 500, but that's a little more then I'm willing to shell out right now... Unless anyone has one they are willing to part with for around $50 lol
