Bopper - 2007-06-04 4:04 PM Thank you ALL for the kind words.... I have no basis of comparison for the ride. I will just have to take your word for it that it was fast. I think I could have gone faster.... but that's just me. I wanted to finish strong... and think I did finish the last 10 km in 16 min (did help that I had 1.5 km of that going down hill at 83 km/h). It was a great learning experience... and I hope to do it again.

I can only assume that it was a pristine road on your downhill ride.  At that speed, a bump in the road can translate into one heck of a road rash.

Now, wait a second!

Did you say 83 km/hr (51 mph) - I didn't know you could go that fast on the bike... The fastest I saw was about 70 km/hr. I was in South America (Colombia) and I saw 2 guys drafted by a truck and going downhill. I was in a car behind them and I thought they were nuts...

Here is a good one:

houston-tri-mama - 2007-06-02 5:50 PM Just wanted to share my new toys with everyone: I bought new shimano pedals for the bike - I'm going to learn how to ride with clips if it kills me and it just might. I also picked up a "thinger" that tells speed and distance among other things to help with my cadence... I'm looking forward to riding tomorrow morning with the new toys!

GREAT!!... way to go, you will be riding like the pros in no time. (BTW... the "thinger" is called a cycle computer)... and they do help... just don't get to carried away looking at the new thinger and forget to unclip your peddles... you don't want to join "The club". Been there... don that... got the scar to prove it.

Have fun riding today!!

Speaking of that....Just yesterday I fell into my car because of a clip out mishap. This makes the 3rd time in 3 weeks. I actually thought I was getting much better at it. ha ha

OK, I have a bit of a quandry.  I've signed up for a Sprint tri in Houston on Sunday.  Short distances, 600m/11mi/5k.  I just found out about a Free duathlon here on base the day before.  Ride 10/Run 5k.  I'm already signed up for the tri.  I've got the hotel and everything.  The question is, am I crazy for even considering doing the du the day before?  Is it possible?  And is it a good idea?  I'm kinda waffling on the whole thing because they're both relatively short.  And I think I might actually stand a chance at placing in the Du.  Well, let me know what you think.

Depends on how good of shape you are in and the distance of the Du... since you have a paid interest in the Houston TRI wouldn't you want your best performance there. Out of curiosity - where is your TRI here in houston - my daughter wants to go to another one.... I'd come out and cheer my BT friends on.

The tri is just south in Sugar Land.  It's the Tejas Tri at some place called Pecan Park.

Cajun8, I would stick with your original plan of the Tejas Tri. I've done running and biking events on back to back days and was always sluggish the 2nd day.
If winning the base Du gets you on a travelling duathlon team or serious bragging rights around the base I probably would enter both races knowing my second day competion would suffer.

I hope all is progressing well this week.  I will be out of training for a few days.  I lost my father to a very unexpected cardiac arrest on Wednesday.  Please keep our family in your thoughts.  I will continue to train at some point because he would want me to and it keeps the heart healthy.  I do ask that everyone make sure that they are getting regular physicals and having their heart checked as extensively as they can.  My dad had physicals and general EKGs every year.  Unfortunately, coronary artery disease isn't always detectible until it is too late.  So please do keep yourself checked out.

Hey Everyone, I'm a triathlete now, finished my first sprint tri today, will write the RR later, I have to work until 5am tomorrow and we just went through a fault and are encountering high pressure gas.

I;ve got a few question that I've been writing down,, of course I can't find them now..

in no particular order..

what do those different colors mean on the calendar?

how do I make things bold when writing or different colors..or that cool strike through thing once I've completed a goal, should I pick up a beginner book on whatever computer code/language this is in?

I'm training for a fall marathon which I've done a few before but also a century ride or at least 75miles, a couple of months before the marathon. so of course I'm thinking if I'm doing both of those.. why not do a 1/2 ironman about a month before the marathon, most likely in place of on of my 20 mile runs then taper.. does that make any sense at all??

what type of drills are good for improving on the bike,, I've done that one legged thing some, is hill training on a bike similiar to hills for running, (speedwork). or when I hear people mention riding in larger/harder gears what does that do?

that's it for now..

thanks mr Mentor
