wyndswept - 2008-01-20 8:25 PM  Do any of you have aero bars on a road frame? What are your thoughts? I am looking forward to getting used to them. They are just the clip on kind so there are no fancy shifters or anything on the ends. Now I think I need a water bottle up front.

That's exactly what I have going, and it works great for me.  Riding in aero did take some time to get used to, though.  Once I had it, though, my speed definitely increased a good 1-2 mph.  I mainly like it this way so I can take them off and do group rides.  Here it is pre-aero drink system, which I also recommend.  Very convenient not having to pop up out of aero to get a sip.

Hope the news from the doc is good Nate.  Never had something like that, and I have no clue as to what it may be.

Hey cool, Sesh. Thanks for the photo. I will have to take a photo of my bike and post it. I was a bit worried about the group ride thing. But I will get used to removing them and putting them back on. I have to move my computer around a bit when add/remove them which is a pain but I am sure it will be fine.

So where is the pre-aero drink system? Did you mean to add a link?

My experience has been that people in group rides don't mind that you have aero bars as long as you are not using them while in the group. One of the fun things about riding with a group is being able to get up to pretty high speeds while riding inches off of someone's back wheel. To do this on aerobars is just plain dangerous (your hands are too far from your brakes). I personally would not follow closely off of someone actually riding on their aerobars. That being said, I know of roadies who can't seem to understand that having aerobars on your bike doesn't mean that you have to ride on them constantly and you don't know when it is appropriate to ride them and when it is not.

Sesh-good looking bike!!!

Here's the only pic I have with the aero drink on it.  Convenience in action:

When everything, aero bars and aero drink are off it, it's just a normal looking roadie.  Here's a pic off the Masi webpage:

Hey Nathan,

Just found this link posted on one of the forums here at BT:

http://www.nathancanadateam.com/

It's destiny, man, with it being 'Nathan Candada Team.'  Worth a shot it sounds like.  They're looking for ten amateur athletes in Canada, and you'll get all kinds of cool (and free) schwag.

He also has a race bike for sale so I will be trying to come up with the cash this week. It will fit me perfect so crossing my fingers this week. Also on a side note; at work I will be applying for a supervisor postion, i think i have a 50/50 chance of getting it so please cross your fingers for me as well

What's up everyone?? My butt muscle is healed (for the most part) and I am planning a good training week. What are everyone's goals for this week? i.e., time, mileage, types of workouts, etc.

Nathan-Have you tried your wetsuit in the pool yet? It's fun as hell!! You should be very fast. It easily takes 5-10 off my 100 time. If people give you funny looks tell them it's because your torso is covered in ringworm and you don't want it to spread. You will soon have the entire pool to yourself.

Grace-When will the Terp return?

Chris-Do you have the whole Hidgons Boston Marathon plan from trainingpeaks.com or just the one you posted here? I am interested in what he says are the "details".

Everyone else-have a good training week!!

Sorry I kind of went MIA for a while. Winter term was hugely intense, it's now over, got my A, applied for some summer work and am finishing up my job application for next fall today. I sat down and wrote out a workout schedule this weekend. I think it will help a lot; it is not something I have ever done but now I have blocked time that I have committed to training.
Got back on the feet today. Did 3 mile run (which is about as far as I ever run) and didn't die so that was good after all the workouts I've been skipping.

Nathan- good luck with the job!! That's awesome!!

Hi everyone,

First off, congrats on all the accomplishments -- Nate for your gear and the potential for a promotion, Kerry on the new wheels, Bill for blissing out after being engaged (hence the weekend off?), Grace for setting up a schedule, and everyone else for doing the workouts during this dark and grey JanuFeb.

I've been MIA as well -- strangely enough, I too have had movement on the job front: today was my first day in a sweet new teaching position, and I this afternoon I gave notice at my old job, which was pretty much thankless. The new job means that I'm seriously in the market for my first set of wheels, and have to decide between buying the 2007 Trek 1000 in Team Discovery Colors at 10% off of list, or doing my homework on a used cycle -- something I'm not so confident I can do in an informed way. Not yet tapped into local tri-teams here in Albany, I don't know anyone local looking to get rid of equiptment like Nate.

I have the Higdon Boston plan which is available online for free (trainingpeaks.com)-- so it is not fully articulated. I'm thinking I should have just bought the plan in full, instead of buying Higdon's book (which I have and have read), because there's a lot of material in the book that I've already read elsewhere. Anyway, the free version is good enough for me, for now.

This week I'll continue ramping up the run mileage and will cut out the cycling almost entriely. I'm going into full Boston training mode, and with the new job may have to decrease weekly training hours. The weather in albany has been sunny lately, which is a rarity, and its been a pleasure to run.

Get out there! I highly recommend it!

Oh, Paul --

On the Higdon Boston training plan, if you head to http://www.trainingpeaks.com/hal/#HalHigdon'sBostonBoundMarathonTra... click on the link "view plan preview", you'll see some of his written "particulars." I don't know if they are more substantial than this in the full-price version, or if this is all you get for the price. If thats all, the stuff you pay for seems like fluff to me.

You're definitely going to be using your triceps a lot swimming, especially if you have a good "catch" phase of your stroke, it means you are pulling a lot of water- this is good. If you are REALLY sore, you might be bumping up your training level too fast. I make sure to work my triceps a lot- I keep a medicine ball in the living room and carry it around the apartment with me and constantly do behind-the-head presses (not too sure on technical names here, just make sure your elbows are tucked in), and I work them at the gym too.

http://www.triathletemag.com/Departments/Training/2007/Hit_the_gym_... is a good list of exercises to target swimming muscles.

Ditto on everything that Grace said. Also make sure that you stay relatively relaxed throughout the stroke. For example, as you push the water past you make sure that you are not locking out your arm and thereby flexing your tricep (similar to what you would do on a tricep machine in the gym).

Your bike sounds very nice!! What color is it? If it is yellow you CANNOT call it the "Raging Banana". That is what I already call my road bike (GIANT). My tri bike is pinkish and I call it the "Pink Stallion".

We will need immediate bike porn when you get that ride!!!

Sore triceps can be good or bad.  As Grace said, it means you're probably pulling a ton of water.  As Paul also warned, you could be tensing them up.  I'm inclined to believe you've ramped up your training and therefore you're feeling the effects.  Swimming works some muscles you don't normally use, and it works the big ones in ways they don't normally operate.  So, some soreness should be expected.  Stretching and some strength excercises like some kick backs should help.
