what happened last december?

full shoulder dislocation playing dodgeball.  not real conducive to swim training 9 months before MOO.  i still ran a bit and hit spin class in a sling, but I think the injury actually helped prevent me from burning myself up.  who knows, maybe it cost me a sub 11:30 though?  ya just work with the hand you are dealt.

dont blame the sport- blame the health clubs that sullied this glorious game by replacing it purity and the kiss of the red rubber playground ball with the more insurance company friendly foam rubber ball that you need to throw 8x harder to get on velocity on.  Its not like my arm just popped out one day.  This was a few years of abuse.  You should play.  It is the sport of kings, or something.

And you had to walk up-hill both ways to school, in 50 feet of snow, while working full time in a child-labor mill making steel... or something

Way to keep at it.  Patience is key here.  My shoulder if finally feeling strong after a year after my incident last Dec.

I hear you... I don't want to rush it at all. I do want to get back at it though. Best thing for me is to have to slowly get back into things again. I would probably muck everything up by jumping back into it with too heavy of a load and risk other injuries.

I have been so bad about checking these forums and posting my workouts in the log. My fitness class in school has a requirement of recording my workouts in a workout log and I have them on paper and plan on putting them up here soon. My training is going okay and I did my first swim the other day.

It was so much harder than I thought! I couldn't even swim with my head under the water and I had no idea what I was doing with my stroke and whatnot. The swim club happened to be there and I asked if I had to be good to join and they said no, so I joined. It was a crazy experience. I'll post my workouts up sometime this weekend and I'm gonna take this time to catch up on posts.

Great idea signing up with the swim club... Make sure you go in there like a spounge and suck up as much knowledge that they have on technique. Don't worry about the speed stuff... A lot of it is going to be getting comfortable in the water. It will come to you... Just keep your positive attitude and you will see your improvements.

I've officially had my 2nd session with my trainer...oh, the agony.  I have officially been to the OMG I'm gonna puke stage.  Upper body is really feeling it, along with all the core stuff, but that's precisely my goal!  I have a very weak upper body and core and need to improve these (specifically the core) for my balance.

I was distracted AGAIN last week (stupid boys...sorry guys.  No offense).  And I'm still hacking up a lung, but my voice is back (I just can't sing).  I didn't get in the pool at all last week, and got in one trainer ride...pathetic, really.

Someone kick my butt, please...

Get back on the horse and think positive thoughts!!  I know waaay too many people that let negative thinking take em out of the game before it even starts.

Doing well... Just planning out the season and getting ready to get back to it.

Here is a discussion topic. Testing. I know it is everyone's favorite. How many threads we have in TriTalk discussing finding LT, proper TT tactics, etc. have started this month? 10? 20?

I understand the logistics, duration and intensity. I just want to hear some opinons because I really want to throw in testing this year v. just putting in time.

The question comes from reading "The Perfect Distance". In it he talks about end of recovery week testing during your base period and that we should basically test at the end of every recovery week. Rotating between the sports (examples: 1,000 yrd swim TT, 10mi bike TT, 30min run TT). What are your thoughts?

I can see the benefit here. You get continuous results of performance enhancement or determent and can adjust your next 3 week base cycle accordingly. Bad test... maybe take intensity back a little maybe work harder on form and efficiency, Good test... review HR zones, adjust as needed, before you get into the build period of your season.

My testing has been pretty informal in the past, simply just 'today seems like a good day to try and PR the 5 miler', throw on the shoes and compare times.  However, utilizing the computrainer this winter and wanting to gauge progress/grow on the bike, I have been doing FTP testing once a month.  I think this is ok cuz I have a set focus- get better on the bike.  Outside of that, I would be reluctant to test for the sake of testing at this point of the season as I consider that I am primarily in base mode still- maintain run, skill work on swim, bike the exception so testing there.  I dont know that it makes sense in this context for me to test my run or swim until I get serious again in a few months.  I dont think its healthy to be ballz to the wall all the time if you want to stay with this long term, so there are times where testing might not be the best idea.  However, I might do some baseline benchmarks in about a month or so to get where I am at the start of the season and see progress (hopefully) over the season.  Its good for seeing whats working, whats not, etc, etc.  Just be wise when ya do it in the yearly cycle methinks.

I may look stupid... but I ain't dumb

I'm not even thinking about any "testing" until I am back to the minimum expected distances to start training for a HIM.

So basically regarding your first post on this subject. Testing for you has been informal and you would not do it until you are in the meat and potatoes of your training season (and healthy). You do see the benefits of testing to see what works (fueling, load, etc). So other than your computrainer tests and the aforementioned "5miler" PR test... what else have you tried? Swimming tests?

Last year I did a lot of cross comparisons on the same SBR, same basic conditions v. results. And I did the classic running LT test. I am looking to do more formal testing when I am working on my season to act as a gauge but probably not every build/rest cycle.

Hate to set myself up here.  But I have been pretty healthy lately.  Feeling pretty good as far as training goes.  Did catch a dose of the lazies which made for some tough swimming yesterday.  Hope everyone is feeling better.

I'm pretty much over my sickness from a couple weeks ago...that knocked me out pretty well.  I have a residual cough, but that's about it.  My training was haphazard at best, and the lovely weather we've been having hasn't been helping any.  Also stressing about work, with some issues going on here. Training is my sanity, though, and I must remember that and keep at it.

Dodged a bullet from my wife. She is finally back to full strength... no lingering cough, etc. Knocking on wood that I don't get anything this season. Looks like the flu has blown through work and her school already... It was really nasty. About a week long and had two forms. One was accompanied by a deep cough that was almost broncitus sounding and high fever (which is what my wife had)... the other was stomach issues.

Training wise I am just plowing may way through the pulled muscle recovery. I would estimate that I am 75-80% there. I am ready to get back in the saddle so to speak. I still get sore from PT and from short runs, not so much from the trainer... so it will definately be slow going until I can get my run duration back in line. I am not going to go full bore back into it and risk reinjury.

I don't have to really start my full training plan until April sometime (HIM is in August) so I still have some wiggle room. The PT is messing with my routine though. I really want to work out in the am's but the PT guys are very much stressing "no activity before PT". I think that this next week I will at least get up and into the gym to do upper body stuff and let the evenings be the PT lower body stuff.
