Hello all. Signed up for HIM in austin Texas Oct 23. Just looking to finish.

By way of background, I am an avid crossfitter and run a couple of marathons each year. I have been a social cyclist but am new to swimming.

I will be using this training program as a template but also maintaining crossfit 4x per week. Gonna have to pay special attention to the swim. I just ran a maraton a few weeks ago and feel confident that if I can make it out of the water and off of the bike I will be able to run the longest HM of my life.

Had my first sprint tri last weekend and have a couple more sprints and an oly between now and austin. I'm 40 and under no illusions that this will be easy.

I think that part of the impetus for the change to tri is that I am little burned out just running and running and running.

My happiest marathon experience was my first one. It was also my slowest. I walked a good bit but my head was up and I was so proud to cross the finish line. I am looking for that experience with HIM Austin.

I look forward to getting to know more of you as we push towards 70.3. Best of luck to everyone.

I too am doing the Ironstar 1/2 IM at Lake Conroe...  I am looking at this plan, and it seems week in the run and the bike,....

I am a Clyde and also signed up to do the Memphis Marathon on Dec 3, so I am doing an extremely run focused Tri Training...

I agree the bike is  the easy part of a tri..... relaxing mentally preparing for the run...

Good Luck... there are also 3 of us from Tomball and Lake Conroe doing our first 1/2 IM..

Kevin Overton

Don't forget this is a true beginners plan. I'm a true newbie to the sport and am finding the plan is preparing me as scheduled. So far I've pushed hard, found success and not felt overwhelmed. That's tops in my book!

Glad the bike is easy for you. I have to push pretty hard to average 21 mph on longer rides, and am hoping to keep that speed during my HIM. I've only done two races, but learned real quick how important pacing is on the bike. My second race was a much more controlled bike effort, albeit challenging, and it set me up for a great run!

I bet Yoda would have been real good at triathlons.

Welcome to the group Jimmy! Sounds like you have a great base to work from. A marathon is in my post HIM plan as I consider a timeline for a full IM race in 2012. I'm considering the Detroit Free Press Marathon in October after my August HIM, but wish I could find one in November to give me a few extra weeks of recovery/training.

Let us know if you have questions and we'll give you our up to the minute best answers! A few have already completed their 2011 HIM after completing this plan and are great resources for those of us still in training! They check the site daily.

I did a brick this mourning to, 26 mile bike ride in 1:24 with lots of rollers. Followed that up with a 30 minute run for 3.4 miles. Felt pretty good.

Question for everyone who is doing or has done this plan. What do you do when you miss a day or two on the plan. I had work get in the way of two day's this week, well three but one was a rest day. Do you make it up or just forget about it?

The two days I missed I made up within the next 7 days. The plan leaves lots of room for make up sessions in my opinion.

Depends which week you are in. If it is a low volume week, you could blow it off or double up. Sometimes I let it be or I found a way to add the hours back in and upped volume. One thing to be mindful of is stringing a lot of days together without a rest can take it's toll. If you will be ramping up hours, guard the days of rest accordingly.

Thanks for the advice, next week is a rest week so I will just let it go. I did a 2:07 ride today for 42 miles! I feel like I am getting my bike legs back after all the running and breaks I took in May. I had an Iron"women" pass me today and talk about motivating. I wanted to see if I could keep pace and we avg 26 mph for three miles. It felt great I ended up going straight and she turned left, but she did ask if I was going to keep following her. Hope everyone has a good 4th.

Hi All.

Just upgraded to Silver membership, and am trying one of the 1/2 Iron plans; the 12 week Oly to Half bridge, since I've got a little over 12 weeks to Pocono 70.3, and just finished Philly last week.

Got into triathlon after losing weight through swimming then being able to run again.  Used to bike everywhere before I got a car.  So tri's seemed like the next step.

This will be my most structured training so far, so we'll see how it goes!

Hey tcj, I am training for Poconos as well, my first 70.3. Your first?  I am following the 20 wk beginner 1/2 IM plan, do you think the upgraded plan offerings are more helpful? Hope the training is giong well.

Yep, first 70.3 race.  Unless I do other races between now and then, this will be 4th tri, having done two sprints last year, and the Philly Oly this year.  Also did the Broad Street run and the Philly half Mary last fall.  That was my barometer for seeing if 70.3 was doable.  I've had foot issues over the years, which seem to be resolved.

I only picked the upgraded plan since it was 12 weeks, and I just the did Oly, so it seemed like a good fit.

Your first also?

Ted

I am also doing the Pocono 70.3 as my first HIM.  I did one duathlon and one sprint triathlon last year.  I have done numerous running distances (10miles, 1/2 marathon, marathon).  I am doing an Olympic in August as my only warm up race before Pocono.  I am suddenly feeling terrified and not sure if I am training correctly.  I follow the plan, but I move everything around to suit my schedule.  I am on the 8th week of the plan, which is a recovery week.  I am curious why next week has 5 swims and only 3 runs for 30 min each?

6 weeks out and just did a 2 hour 13.15 mile run!!! It's the longest run I've done in my life continuous, and I felt very good at the end. It's a real confidence boost knowing I can do the half marathon distance; albeit standalone. Nutrition and energy were great. The overcast morning was NIIIIIIICE! Resting now with legs up getting ready to watch some world cup soccer :-)

Yup, this will be my first HIM!  Our race history is freakishly similar!

I see you are in Media, I often make the trek out to Ridley Creek loop to get some hills in.  Recently I have been riding in Quakertown, also a bit of a drive, but this way I can safely ride and keep pace up.

Let me know how the upgrade plan is going, I still have time to change things up.

Great job on the run!  I'm very jealous as I have to wait for the kids to get off the camp before starting my runs this week and it was 79 and full sun by the time I started.  It was basically chasing down the shade.  But a good chance to start to get used to the warmer weather.

Great job DV. I did that one 2 weeks ago and your right - it does give you a huge confidence boost, (especially, as like you, that was the furthest i had ever run and only started distance ish running in November). I also managed back to back metric century rides 3 days later... So individually I am all set, just have to get them all done on that one day!!! LOL

Did the Swim (2km)/Bike(46km) yesterday and all went really well. Discovered that easing back on those 2 did not affect my times by much and left me way more refreshed. HR in the pool avg 126 and then 122 on the bike. My new go to gear is big ring on front and 15 on the back (mid cog ish). I can cruise the flats at approx 32kmh at a higher cadence and not get fatigued. Love it. Eload drinks and GU Bru Pommy/Blue berry 2x sodium worked, and added Gu Gels every 45mins. So nutrition is nailed for me.

Keep on trucking buddy - recovery week for you after this one.

Steve

Nope - 1:00 ride and a 1:00 continuous swim!

But you're right .... recovery week next week baby!!!

Well done.  Get ready to eclipse your PR distance when you get to the 2.5 hr run near the end of the plan.  I hit 15+ miles during that run and it was at that time I first thought to myself - hmmm? Maybe a I could do 26.2? Well, I will find out in November now that I signed up for the Philadelphia Marathaon.

Everybody's up and about with their training!  Good job everyone!!!  My next HIM and my A race for the year would be in Asia in Ironman Philippines.

I for myself took the past 3 days off...  Last weekend was hard core with a 50 mile ride with 2600 feet elevation immediately followed by an 8.5 mile run.  I followed that with a 7 mile Sunday run at 82F at 7:27 pace.  That was a real eye opener....  Of course I made all the calories lost with all the bbqs that happened on Sunday and Monday.

I haven't done any work outs since then 'coz the quads were sore and now they're fine!!!  But then tomorrow's my birthday and I might go for a swim run work out work then bbq at night with the buddies.

This weekend will be the true test of my running in heat capabilities.  I'm planning a 1 hour run in Las Vegas wherein the predicted high is 100F...  Goal is to do 7 miles in under 1 hour...  Maybe I'll do a 1.5 hour run...  Just maybe...  Wish me luck!

I'm at week 14 and have settled into a nice routine after last week's break (stuck on a tropical island Smile)

Feeling much better about the run.  It looks like the real key was following the well-worn advice of run lots, mostly slow, sometimes fast.  I've broken up the long run into 2 shorter runs for now, so I'm running 4-5x/week, which my body seems to appreciate.  Got the neuroma under control, and am increasing the weekly mileage w/ NSAIDS and ice after each run. The Sole-brand orthotic insoles are a lifesaver.

Looking forward to testing myself at a (hilly) OLY tri end of this month!!!
