I am gonna have to agree with Scott here - Just even your language in the report is getting you off to a bad start before the gun even goes off.  You CAN BEAT that 'Usual Mental Block".  Maybe you need to just run a race without setting high goals for it.  Give yourself some easily accomplished times, make them and then improve from there.  If you are expecting that mental block to come - it sure as hell will each and every time.

I think you already have a plan set up for working on running during the offseason so you are off to good start.  Work on the mental aspect of it.  I try and make each workout like it is the race.  Doesn't have to be race effort but just put yourself in different situations mentally and break through them.  And they all don't have to be bad situations either.  Even if you are at mile 1 on a slow jog -Picture yourself on mile 3.5 and feeling strong.  It works.   With some work you will be fine.

Here is my race report from this past weekend--

http://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=271974

This was targeted to be a fun race for me--but still struggled with the run.....I am thinking I am not doing enough training runs Frown

May I go out on a limb here and say you sir are too hard on yourself.  That is a great time. The mental part of this is very important.  I spent nearly as much time on it as I did getting ready physically for Ironman.  Positive self talk is a skill.  It has to be practiced.  Mantras are easiest.  I am a strong runner, I am a strong runner...  Light, quick, light, quick...Live Strong, Live Strong ...  All that really helps.  I had to practice it during training.  It became second nature.  I quit listening to music and started practicing this because they don't allow music during races anyway.  It works!

Yep, I'm in agreement as well.  You are way to hard on yourself.  What helps me is playing the "just until" game.  When the going gets tough and I find myself wanting to stop running, I find a landmark not too far, like a light post or tree or whatever floats your boat, something that's like 100 yards away and I tell myself that I'm going to run until I get to that point.  Then when I get there I do it again.  Breaking it up into smaller chunks like that seems to help me.  Another strategy I use during races only is to find someone around me and use them as my pacer.  Makes it easier to continue running knowing that I'm "competing" against someone else Smile

I've even got a funny story about using that last strategy: at the half marathon I did in August, I found a girl to pace myself with.  We both stopped at one of the water stations around mile 9 or so.  After I got through the station and started running again, I couldn't find her.  I panicked a little thinking I didn't have my running buddy with me anymore.  Then when I saw her again, I ran up to her and said "I was wondering where you were?"  She gave me this look like "uh, do I know you, freak?" then I smiled and said "I was using you as my pacer"...in a totally friendly and nice way.  She must've thought I was a weirdo b/c she just shrugged and ran off.  Guess some people aren't there to make friends.  haha! Laughing

I'm in San Fran for work this week and I ran on the treadmill last night.  I had my ipad all set up and was watching a show while running.  BUT I still couldn't run longer than 30 min or so.  I get soooo bored on the dreadmill!  Any tips/suggestions for being able to run more than 3 miles on that thing?!

So anyone ever have any Siatica issues?  I started last saturday with this aching in my calf/shin area during a show.  On Tuesday it turned into a burning tingling.  Now my anckle, foot and calf are getting stiff and achey.  Everythign I have researched points to Siatica issues.  I went ot my chiropractor twice this week and is working on trying to alleviate it.  Never had this before so it is starting to worry me since it is getting a littel worse each day.

Thinking about just taking some complete time off and doing stretching and yoga to see if it gets any better.  Any suggestions or tips?

I had a herniated disc in my back that was pushing on the nerve and causing ALOT of leg pain a few years ago.  Some of the excersises they gave me worked to help dull the pain, but it would never go away completly.  Had to have surgery to get it fixed.  I know some people who do the hanging from the feet thing to releive the pressure and they swear by it.  A few minutes and they're good for a month.

I hate the dreadmill, too. Don't! Run outside!! (depending where you are in San Fran, there are some neat places to run - when I was there, I saw lots of people running down by Fisherman's wharf, for example..

If you absolutely must run on the treadmill, try breaking it up and doing strength training in between segments (i.e. run 2 miles, and do some sit ups; run another 2 miles, then do some pushups, etc.).  It helps break it up a bit more.

In something unrelated, I need to vent a bit.  I went back to work yesterday, and had a co-worker (who runs, but not long distances) scoff at my time when he asked what my final time on the marathon was.  I should have known better than to tell this particular person, but I didn't think it through until it was too late. It totally killed my "hey, I did something amazing" buzz; which I know I shouldn't let it do, but still... I mean, I know I was slow, but I still finished (within the time limit).. so frustrating! It also means I am now qualifying my answer to "how did it go?" with "well, I was really slow, but I finished", instead of the answers I was giving earlier (variations on "I finished and it was awesome"); which I HATE that I am doing. Have any of you ever had this happen? If so, how did you deal with it?

Did this joker scoff at you in front of group of co-workers or was it just a conversation between you two?  Has he ever run a marathon?  Why are people such a-holes?  You should be very proud of what you did and not feel like you have to minimixe or downplay your accomplishment.

You can either ignore him or call him out and if he hasn't run a marathon ask him "what his finish time was?" and then so "Oh wait - I forgot you've never run a marathon"  And if he has then just say some remark with attitude liek "sorry we all can't be as great as you?"

Marthoning is such an individual goal sport that you can never compare yourself with other people.  People like him who feel the need to put down your accomplishment just to make himself feel better really bother me.

Ouch -How do you feel now after the surgery?

I am on the fence if this is a nerve or a muscle issue.  I have been stretching and foam rolling everything out about 3 times a day.  I found a really tight spot in the back upper portion of my calf that I have been focusing on and it seems to help.  Haven't had any issues today and even did a 30 mile ride and feel good.

Hopefully with a little TLC I can prevent a major setback.

Try doing some interval speed work or hill workouts to get the HR up. Reduces the amount of time and give youa great workout.  Also try the speed walk for 20 minutes at max elevation.  Great workout and low impact and good change of pace.

So I was getting pretty bummed out about missing A BUNCH of workouts last week and decided to give myself a little boost.  I decided to do some role playing -haha.  This week is the first week of Ironman training.  I am doing everything from bedtime routine, nutrition and workouts this week to help fine tune once everythign really kicks in.

Did my first Fink swim workout and went pretty good - 2500 Yards.  Kind of dragged from my lack of swimming lately but got er' done.  Run at lunch.

Brian - after looking at the Fink consistency you probably have nightmares about it-haha  Monday Rest Day, Tuesday swim/run, Wed bike, etc.....

My only advice is don't get too caught up in having a super strict plan right now. You will have 9 months starting Jan to have every detail of your life mapped out! lol

I didn't know I did but apparently that is one of my issues.  Does not sound like rest will help my issue more about solving the reason for the problem.  Yoga is supposed to help along with a ton of core work ie 4 times a week.  Ill let you know what else as I keep going to PT

Screw them, thats when I say you might be faster but I'll still kick your and they usually walk away with their head down. lol

On a similar note when you tell someone you did an IM they always ask how HI was.  Then try to explain kona to them, and how you qualify.

Just say you did a marathon there is only 1 person that wins everyone else is slower.

did a whopping 45ish mile ride today with a buddy and he had the bright idea to ride with the wind going out, made the ride home very interesting.  I was actually happy with my ride since it was my second or third since wi.  I need to get something going as I have lost what little power I had and all my speed.

I'm happy for you Tim.  Good luck!   The drill on the pain issues are as always...RICE.  What out going to hard too soon.  We are injury prone this time of year.    We don't slow down to give the body a chance to repair before we go at it again hard.  That's when I wound up with IT band last year.  I made the time worthwhile focusing on the swim and light bikes but it was needless.    Enjoy the baby.

As for people who put others down, I'm reminded of something a friend posted the other day. "Some people think I have a bad attitude, but I say screw them."

I'd just say, "You should try one and see how you do."

You put yourself out there.  You DID do something damn amazing.  We run with the big dogs here.  People doing triathlons up to Iron Man, people running races up to marathons.  We forget that even if we are doing sprints or racing 5K for the first time, we are doing something pretty damn special that most people aren't doing.  We are special people as far as I'm concerned.   We push ourselves beyond what normal people only watch on TV.   People who put us down as unhappy, unfulfilled .   Screw them.

Swagger dammit.  You deserve it.  Spring, Oly, half IM full IM.  5k, half marathon, full marathon.  Swim races.  You all rock.

No news yet - we called this morning before we left for hospital and all the rooms were full - talk about a let down.  They are gonna try and get us in this afternoon.

As we were getting ready to leave this morning - my wife and kids go crazy with the cowbells at races, so I grabbed the Ironman cowbell and threw it in the pregnancy bag and told her I was gonna do the cowbell while she was pushing-haha  She was not amused.

Tim - good luck.  The cowbell is awesome.  From the stories you have told in the past, it seems like you and your wife like to give each other grief.  Have fun with it.  Also, I agree with Dave about your IM training.  It seems really early to get into the strict regiment.  I was on the verge of burnout in late July after starting in January.

Heather - You are in the 1% of the population that has run a marathon. Be very proud of yourself at whatever pace you finished.

Scott - have I missed an update on your surgery?  Did it go well?  taking a month or so off the bike?

So I am driving down the road with my daughters yesterday. Very carefully- because a cop is following right behind me.  I was getting nervous as he pulled into the grocery store lot behind me, watched me get out, then pulled up behind my car.  He says to me, "I have been running your plate for the past 2 miles, but could not find your name."  I am starting to shake by now.  Then he asks if I am the guy that he almost took my hat in the changing tent before the run at IM.  We had similar hats form same local tri store, sat down next to each other in the tent, and live in the same town.  After a few minutes of talk in transition, I hit the road and never thought much about him again.  So, he sees my 140.6 sticker and chases me through my hometown.

New training partner, with a funny story of meeting.  Good thing is he has a lake to swim at for next year with a 1.2 mile course.

Hey Team.

I hope everyone is well. I am just starting to get caught up with work since getting home from PEI and I have officially caught the first cold of the season Yell. I was hoping to get a run in today but that will be based on how I feel.

Also, my first curling night tonight - so that should be fun. Moving into a much more competitive league so I am bracing myself for a good a$$ whiping but looking forward to learning. As I have always believed, if you want to get good at something, hang out with someone who is good at it. This of course is why I appreciate all of you letting me hang out with you in this group - you make me better!Smile

Anyway, Tim - I am guessing you have a new addition by now so I hope all went well DAD.

Brian - would really like some advice on where Coach and I should be looking for accomodation next year in NYC.

Have a great day everyone.

I have hernia surgery and colonoscopy in the morning.  On liquids since last night.  Get  to cleanse when I get home.  Oh boy!  Good part is I'll be healed and good as new in a couple of weeks so I can look forward to some serious training from Dec. on.

I hope your curling goes well.  As for IM - I have to look at the map some more.  It looks like the swim start is one place, run another, and finish line altogether another area.  It might be good to see the logistics of the race before making a decision on where to stay.  Questions I have are how do you get to TA and start line in am?  Do you need to make travel arrangements to get back to your bike after the finish?  Is IM providing any shuttle service.  I will look into the area a bit while figureing this stuff out.  (I remember getting all nervous about where I was going to stay in Louisville last January - all part of it

It is so weird the people you meet doing IM's.  I was doing FL and ran a couple miles with the CFO of Hartford insurance (a company we represent).  About a month later in their news letter he was talking about running with me.  Hell one race I ran with a lady that was the form COO of Microsoft.   As Tim's website had an article tri's are the new golf.
