Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Catwoman - 2012-10-27 5:05 PM Spent a few hours in Urgent Care this morning. Not exactly where I wanted to be the week before IMFL. I've been fighting off a cold for a while now. It was time to go to the doctor when I started coughing up yellow phlegm this morning. Diagnosis- Upper Respiratory infection to go along with my cranky right hip. I'm hoping the shot and medication will work quickly. After not being able to race IMFL in 10 because of a broken toe it is hard not to be a bit freaked out. Good news is there are 6 more days to recover. The work for the race is done. I feel for you, I always worry about things like colds and accidents leading up to a race...hang in there! I hope things get better! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Rene, I believe you will be fine. Most viruses run their course over a few days. You've done the training. Make sure you stay hydrated and get the rest you need. I'm excited for your upcoming IM! |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Rest up Rene! That's not great timing, but you've got plenty of time to come back from it. Jamie -- congrats on the PR! I look forward to reading about it. Randy -- great result for your son. He's nowhere near as fast as he will be in 3-4 years, which by the looks of things is 'pretty fast'. Michael -- very cool! I remember when my sons did their first. It was great fun to watch. I got back from NSF late last night and I've been a bit brain dead today. Got to get back into the swing of things tomorrow...
Shoe situation: mine kind of stinks right now. I've got 3 pairs, all different, and I'm rotating them. But they are all worn out and I need new shoes. I've been having various foot problems and I need to find some shoes that at least don't make them worse. I've run in Kinvaras for a long time, but I might try something else. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Michael/d3-fantastic picture. Very cool! Careful, they grow up fast. Jamie-PR! That's excellent. Good work. Rene-rest...recovery.....race.....then realize your goals! Michael-granted its only one run but I like the Brooks. Drop is the same as the Kinvara2's and the Mirage. Feel a bit more structured than the Kinvara. At times I've felt the Kinvara2's felt a little sloppy. I like the original Mirage but not the Mirage 2. It would be nice if the manufacturers would not change the model every 6 months. Randy |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Rene, get well soon. Sucks you are sick, but like you said, the hay is in the barn. You will be better by race day. Randy, I am not committed to any one pair of shoes. I run in different shoes every day. It does make it hard to pick what shoes to wear on race day but I just like to switch it up in training. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks! Rocephin shot and a Z pack will hopefully get rid of this quickly. I've finally made the switch out of my trusty (safe) Asics Nimbus with orthotics to Mizuno's. The plan is to continue to transition to a lighter shoe. |

For some reason my shoes don't go as fast as your shoes Randy It would be ok if it was only 2-3 pairs. I rotate among about 15 pairs. I do have some I like better than others but I have commitment issues when it comes to shoes. Maybe I just have issues.... |

I think the most I've ever had in the rotation is 5. I will say this: I am finding greater and greater value in rotating between slightly different style shoes. My feet seem to do better when they get slight variation from run to run. Edited by Experior 2012-10-27 9:38 PM |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have been rotating between a pair of Mizuno Wave Precision 12 (second pair of these, I love them) and Newton Distance. Right now I am rotating back and forth just so I have enough support on my Newton's for IMFL. I definitely need some new shoes, but like Randy said, I am pretty bummed that the shoe manufacturers continue to change shoes. Sometimes these are for the better, but from what I've seen of the new Wave Precision 12, I am not sure if that is the case this time. Randy-I had to calculate how fast his 8k was, because honestly I had no idea. He is a beast! I know where you get your running legs from! To the other IMFL athletes! Rest and hydrate this week. Weather looks to be amazing for OUR day. Definitely ready, which is scary because I am supposed to be doubting my training right now! |

Randy Two pairs of Newtons (Gravity and Distance) One pair Hoka One One (Bondi B)--do most of my really long stuff in these Two different Brooks (Green Silence, ST racer 5?) Two pairs of Zoots--no idea model numbers One pair of Mizuno Trail shoes Two pairs of Nikes (ancient unstructured "flat" + one pair of Frees) One pair K-Swiss K-Ruuz--love these One pair of Skecher Go Runs--love these Two pairs of Saucony Kinvara 2s--probably my IM Shoe this time around Several pairs of Asics in various stages of falling apart. I still run in them occasionally if the weather is really bad and I don't want to get another pair really dirty. I may be missing a pair or two in there One thing about having this many different shoes is that it is really hard to wear them out. I just keep collecting them. When you run in different shoes every day, none of them accumulate all that much mileage. I threw away a pair of Brooks this year and teared up a little. The Hokas are getting pretty worn right now but I am just not ready to say good bye yet. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() jimmyb - 2012-10-27 7:02 AM Nice race pix of your son, that is a fast time! Wow! Seems practically a sprint the entire way? Last night I purchased my next set of Asics Cumulus 14 shoes ($104 after discount). I have put about 400 miles on my last pair and was due. I've been very happy with these. I love they way they feel and that makes me more likely to run. I used to be a Brooks Ghost fan but the last pair I bought for some reason did not feel right and they rubbed my foot till it hurt. They were supposedly "upgraded" but the improved version just did not work for me. As an ex wrestler I had committed to and worn Asics for close to twenty years. The last pair I bought were like your Brooks, I just did not like the way they felt on my feet. I ordered a pair of Brooks from Sierra Trading Post because they were on sale for about $40 and I loved them. This was the beginning of the end for me. I decided my blind love for Asics was misguided and started trying any shoe that caught my fancy. The above post is the result. I have a very neutral foot and can run in almost anything so it has been fun to play the field when it comes to running shoes. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jason --- Nice ride! How'd you get it to stick to the wall like that? I just got back from a run that I was really afraid of doing: 6 hard miles in the middle of a 13-14 mile run (and my past two runs felt pretty bad, so I was more afraid than usual about how this would go down). It worked out OK, so now I'm pleasantly tired. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Shoes: I just started wearing a new pair of Asics Gel Nimbus 13s, they feel pretty good. I had Asics for my last pair, and I'm happy so far. I'm not super-pciky, though I'm still waiting on official results for my HM. My preliminary time is 1:52:26, but that was the gun time, and they say they're posting the chip time tonight. I am thrilled with that time. This race really justified all my training this year. Quick recap: I started running with a group in July of 2011 in order to run the Savannah HM. We ran long runs on Saturday, and I ran whatever I wanted during the week. I was about 185 at the time. I did the race in 2:12 (about a 10:04 pace) and felt really good about it, I was really liking running. I got a little tired of just running, though, and I also had some back issues that my doc said would be helped through core straightening, so I started tri training in February of this year. Fast forward to now, my watch clocked me at 1:51:53, an 8:37 pace, which was phenomenal! I wanted at least 2:00, but from the start of the race, I just knew that I could beat a 9'/mile pace. So I started a little fast, but just kept it up the whole race and felt great about it. The best part was the hills, and there were a lot of hills on the course, that's where my conditioning really showed. I would be running with a group, and as soon as we hit a hill I would out-pace them. I just felt like I could hold a hard pace longer than most of the runners around me; I've never experienced that and it felt great. I ended up getting 293 out of 1,520 runners, which I'm thrilled with. This is how you end a season! I'm really thrilled to see all my hard work paying off. Now I just need to get my new bike back from my LBS, where it's being assembled, so I can get back on the 3-sport training wagon. Thanks for all the help, mentors and apprentices (I hate the word mentee)! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jamie-that is a great time. Sounds like you prepared and raced well. Keep at it over the Winter and you will be in a great spot come Spring. Jason-NICE BIKE! I really like the black/red color combo. After IMAZ you are going to have to do something about those leaves Michael-nice job on the run. Tough injury for the Lattimore kid from SC. Sounds like he worked really hard to get back from the ACL injury last year. I did a trainer ride this morning and an easy run this afternoon. First time to hit 30 miles running in a week for me since late 2011. With a HM likely on the horizon in early December I thought it was time to gradually start working up the mileage. Randy |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It is strange about the Hokas. They are totally different than anything out there but they are so comfortable. They really do make the long runs noticeably easier on the legs. They are so smushy that they feel like they would be slow but they are light enough that they really don't slow me down at all. I know a local guy who has done a bunch of sub 18 5Ks in them, so....... |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() d3term1ned - 2012-10-27 10:48 AM I just got back from my daughter's first triathlon. Excited and SO PROUD! This is so cool. Sorry I didn't mention it earlier. You should be proud. She looks proud too. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Jason - Thank you very much! I am very proud of my daughter. Even with the temperatures in the high 30's, low 40's she did not complain at all. When we asked her if she wants to do another one her comment was "Yes! But in the Summer!" Shoes - I am currently running in the Nike Free Run +3 and like them alot, I also own a pair of VFF's, Zoot Ultra Speed and Asics Gel Cumulus 13. I am thinking about purchasing a pair of Newton's. My Triathlon season came to an end with today's Sprint Monster Triathlon. It was a good last race and I am ready to start my off season preparation to build a strong running and biking base going into the next season. It was in the low 30's when I got to the race site this morning. By far the coldest race that I have done so far. I have been training with my buddy all season long and my goal was to beat him at least in one race. He is the better runner which is what kills me all the time. Today he beat me by 1 minute ... oh so close ... Its healthy competition which pushes us both to train harder. Here is my race report: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=466200 Have a good night ... see you tomorrow fresh and ready to rumble! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Michael/d3-nice job on the race. A solid Winter of training and your buddy will be chasing you next year! IMFL folks....Rene and Nick...what are your race/bib numbers so we can follow you? Randy |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wow ... this feels really weird ... the Triathlon season is over. I am looking at my calendar and I am not seeing anything on it triathlon related. I am running the Dallas Half Marathon on Dec. 9th and my running coach yesterday told me that there is a duathlon at the Texas Motor Speedway in November that I might check out. What is going on with everyone else? |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Morning all. Nice job on the race, Michael! What's going on? I'm pretty focussed on a half-marathon in December as well. I realized over the weekend that I've allowed myself to put on a few pounds, so beginning yesterday I am really focused on losing weight before December. Success there is probably the difference between hitting my goal and not hitting it, so I'm going to be pretty hard on myself on that score. Nov. 1 is my 'start-up' day for getting back to doing some swimming and biking. Unstructured at first. The plan for spring HIMs kicks in in late December. |
![]() ![]() |
Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Rene: Hope you feel better enough to race your race!! Michael: Nov. 1 is my swimming and bike training start too. I have to start running in the morning. That will be one of the harder things. I am not good at waking up early. I cannot seem to get on the computer lately to get involved. So busy with the husband home and on leave! ![]() |
![]() ![]() |
Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Morning all. How are the IM people feeling? Tough intervals for me today. This is also my last day as a 'pure runner' -- I become a triathlete again starting tomorrow... |
