I have a coach (actually same one as cusetri - although really he has the same one as me as I've been with her for a few years now and he's only recently seen the light   )
I'm also USAT certified coach and I love figuring out other peoples training and I absolutely LOVE not having to figure out my own!  (my coach also has a coach)

PennState - 2010-04-03 8:38 PM Hey, question for those posting in this thread???

How many of you are coached?
Following a training plan?
Neither?

Me?
No plan, no coach.

Who's next?

I like your theme!

My history of training plans:

1981-1988 - un-coached and no plan whatsoever.  Biggest accomplishments came with 15 seconds to the world record (unofficial) in the mile, made CAT II USAC and Qualified for Kona.

My Return.
2008 - un-coached and the plans in the head.  I used a BT plan for my first comeback HIM.  That didn’t go so well, sever muscle spasm after the race.

2009-2010 - un-coached and the plans in the head.

So far I’ve not had any major injuries.  Only a few muscle pulls with the worst a hamstring in 08’

No coach. Combination BT Beginner IM Plan and common-sense-and-other-races-I'm-doing-and-trying-to-incorporate-into-IM-training plan.

Hey, has anyone ever used Swedes instead of "regular" goggles? I'm so sick of the raccoon eyes look I've got going after every flipping swim workout now.  (I swim before work and I'm getting a little tired of the "Are you ok? You look like you haven't slept at all" comments). Someone recommended them to me. Anyone have any experience using them for swimming workouts and/or races?

I used the sweedish speed goggles in high school.  No problems in workouts or meets.  I havent bought any in years, but I couldnt imagine they would be to expensive to try out.  I always used part of the extra head strap for my nose piece, which gave a more custom fit and was more durable than the string they gave ya.

I have a tri coming up in a couple weeks with a indoor swim.  Does anybody wear speedsuits to these?  Its only 400m, but if you have a speedsuit already, im thinking why not wear it?  Is it even legal?

PennState - 2010-04-05 11:01 AM What's new in LP thread workday today? Anybody training

Did 3000 Y swim this AM... I really love swimming in the morning. Does anyone else find that they pick up pace as the continue on a "long" swim. My last 1000 is always fastest,  and my middle 1000 is always the 2nd fastest.

I am the same way. I am always afraid of getting hypoxic by going out too fast so I seem to baby the first 400. The middle is always my best as I am warmed up. The back end is usually faster as well since I have an endpoint I am working towards and focus more on the clock. During the race I would probably need to monitor that towards the end to conserve energy for later in the day.

Seems like an expensive proposition for something you would only use maybe 2 times a year. Does transition time count as well? If so I wouldn't think its worth it. If you already bought one and transition time doesn't matter, then I would use it. I would think an Oly would be the min you would want to use one of these in.

Personally I'm pretty tires from my big week that just finished. I see this day turning into a rest day.

Yeah. You're starting to talk to yourself. I'd say a rest day is in order.

Dream Chaser - 2010-04-04 8:50 PM

I just planned out 686 miles for myself this month on my Training Calendar.  The extra 86 miles is padding for bad weather and such.  No Excuses.  Man, my Running is going to take a HIT this month!!  My Running is only going to consist of short Transition Runs and 1 Long Run per week.  But this is why I am a TRIathlete and not just a Runner anymore.  God-Willing this nice weather will continue throughout April.

DC, why 600 miles?  How did you come up with that and what reason?  Just curious, but I think its way off by trying to hit such big mileage.  You may or it's known to cause injury by increasing volume so quickly.

IMO I think you’re better off increasing on the mileage maybe to 450 and keeping your swim and run there as well.  Maybe pick up the swim a bit.  Use the swim on recovery days as well.  Then next month increase the bike to 500 or 550.

Don’t get me wrong I'll support you and its just my opinion.

It's just what I think I'm capable of.  I will 'listen to my body' closely and adjust if need to.  April is the only month where I don't have any Races (one mini-Sprint) so I want to really BUILD my Bike Fitness this month.  In early May I have another Half Marathon and then a Half Ironman, then another Half Ironman in early June; so only in April and then jumping to mid-June am I going to be able to consistently BUILD on the Bike.  I plan to ride within myself, though.  I just want to put miles into the legs.

I've never had a coach and my training is fairly unstructured.  I know what I need to do to build my volume in each discipline and in what time frame, so I just go with that.  This far out, I don't really even plan my weekends much and just decide depending on what's going on in my life and how I feel.  I push myself along the way and listen enough to my body and will skip workouts or take a rest day as needed.  I wouldn't necessarily recommend this for a beginner doing their first IM, but it's worked okay for me.

re: swimming, the first 1000-1500 meters feels like I'm still warming up.  I don't think I have much fast twitch in me (for any discipline) and I've spent these last several years working on my slow twitch anyway, so that's what it feels like I've got.  Guess, I'll never be particularly fast this way, but I can go long.

I guess we have a significant weather advantage here in California (even in Nor Cal) for biking during the pre-spring months since we can mostly bike year round (that and I bike to work every day which is good for about 350 miles/month).
