Hi! Not doing LP this year but going up 2x this year (11-18 june for training/camp - leaving directly from Eagleman) and race week with my Team. I've done LP in 2007 and 2011 and it's hands-down my favorite race and race location. Getting excited and been following this thread.

I read on slowtwitch that the water could already be 70 degrees in the lake... wow..

Sluggo312 - 2012-05-30 9:26 AM This doesn't count as an actual confirmation but I read a couple weeks ago that people were swimming in Mirror Lake much earlier this year than in years past.  I don't think we should count on a wetsuit legal swim.

I don't know about you, but I plan on bringing a few 5 gallon buckets of ice to dump into the lake to cool it off.. just in case.

Last year it just barely crept into the temp zone to disqualify wetsuits for awards.  To not allow them entirely would require an entire 6F temp increase - even pools during a hot summer have a hard time reaching 84F.  You'd need a sustained heat wave for a couple weeks leading up to the event to raise the temperature of a body of water the size of Mirror Lake to anywhere close to 84.  Not saying it isn't possible, and I'm keeping it in the back of my mind as a concern - so I certainly hear ya on that.

I saw a bunch of peeps from Team Fexy at Triple T ... good luck at Eagleman where you know the water is gonna be above 80. Have a teammate doing it as well.

Great now I got my first thing to worry about for the race.  When I was volunteering last year for LP and they made the announcement that it would not be a wetsuit legal swim.  You were able to chose to wear the suit or not but could not quailify for anything.  So I was thinking what would I have choosen.  If I wore the suit it would have been my luck where I would have had the race of a lifetime and would have placed or something funny like that.  If it's not wetsuit legal swim what are the other options?  I have heard of speed suits but have no idea what they are or if it is even benificial to get one just in case.  Ohh how fun it is to worry about things so far in advanced.

Seadoacha, Id be surprised if EN cares to qualify each person leaving on the rides and runs that weekend.  I suppose it all depends on how well they are organized.  I am enrolled and paid $99 for the weekend.  For $99. I dont expect arm bands, point checks, etc.  I think youll be fine if you roll with us but cant say for sure.  The talks before and after the rides/runs may be a different story as they will most likely be in a reserved hotel meeting rooms but even then...  ????  Im sure the BT crew will be posting as we arrive up there and we can have some meeting points.  The swim on Friday is on our own so please join us for that (at a minimum).

Last year was really unusual for it being not a wetsuit legal race.  I mean how many years has Lake Placid IM been around and how many years has it been wetsuit illegal?  Temperatures up there haven't exactly been unseasonably warm, in fact about three weeks ago it was snowing in LP, and maybe the hail yesterday cooled it off?  I don't have an exact temperature, but was told "you still have to wear booties and a cap" in mirror lake as of right now.

And JMoney- your other option is a swimskin or speedsuit or whatever you want to call it.  They have a list of legal ones on the USAT site.  They do give you some extra buoyancy but nothing near a wetsuit.  They also tend to be slightly expensive, so depends on whether you plan to do many warmer tri's whether its worth it or not.

Since I don't plan on qualifying for anything (you'd have to be like top 5-6 in your age group), it'd be a no brainer for me - wear the wetsuit.  Yeah you might not get points for the event in your USAT standings, but as it's my first one, I really don't care.

I understand that it gets hot, and I've worn a wetsuit on training swims where it gets awfully warm - but to me having the extra bouyancy and reduced drag is worth it.  Plus, the swim is at 7am - the sun is barely over the top of the mountain.  If it were a 1-2pm swim that might be different.  Plus, 3000 people churning water will draw up some of the cooler water from below.

The wetsuit/non-wetsuit swim last year was a mess. At IMTX they had an option to start the two groups 10 minutes apart. I hope they do the same at IMLP as it was a crazy swim not wearing a wetsuit and swimming around most in wetsuits. Hoping they have a similar policy for IMLP if the water is warm enough.

I'm sure the talks will be private since they raised the entry fee to like 500 bucks.HA! I missed the boat before they raised the cost. Maybe we can get the entire group form BT to rough me around in the water for more experience.lol. Just don't try and take me out of my race before LP!

I'm jealous that all you guys are able to head on over to LP and train on the course.   I was able to do the course last year so that will have to do.   Make sure you give us all feedback on how the course is.

Dream Chaser - 2012-05-30 8:20 AM Can any LP locals, or anyone who went up this time last year and is goin up again, confirm if the weather has been warmer this year compared to last. I think it's, perhaps, obvious that it has been a warmer winter. I'm thinking that it's almost a certainty Mirror Lake will be over 76 degrees this year.

Facebook page "Ironman lake placid volunteer" reported 66 off the dock on tuesday of last week!

Jim,

According to their itenerary theres a ride debrief at 5pm.  If EN leaves at 8am for the whole 112miles ride, we may not be back until...3pm? +1hr run off the bike.  So I guess, we'll swim around 7pm?  assuming it ends around that time.

During our training camp we are going to be training with and without suits. I for one have never swam open water without a suit. I just know if for some reason I go without a suit it will be an easy go for me. Those doing Eagleman will have an opportunity to go without a suit since it is almost always above the temps from what I hear.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. I think last year was the first time in IMLP history that is was not wetsuit legal to qualify. If it wasn't the first time then it was the 2nd time. All I know is that it's gonna have to take some serious heat to get that lake above 80 come July 22. Not that I am mathemagician or science guy.

Subject: Lake Place weather and temps - 31 May 2012

After doing some digging and finding nothing, I reached out to a boat rental place on Mirror Lake.  The guy (Greg) was nice enough to check the temp and he says he will update me every couple of days.  So, with that being said, here is the first report:

"Just came back from a SUP and the temp at the end of the public beach dock was 73"

Use this for what it worth, I presume this is more valuable if we see a trend.

I have also gathered the some data from the history of Ironman.  I didn't realize the humidity was so high, but I can see the odds of rain is low.  Of course, Nature doesn't really understand odds but I found this interesting otherwise.  Data helps my nerves....

I will see if I can put this into Google Docs as I don't see where to insert a file here.   So I will post again when I get a new temp from Greg.

best,

t

I don't think the water will be getting any warmer this next week for training on the wknd of the 6th. I just looked at the forecast there and it says high 50's/ low 60's this week, but the training wknd looks like it will be 70! That's good for me, however I'm sure it will change 20 times. 7pm on Friday sounds good for a swim as well!
