So just wondering, why did they shorten Muncie?  The heat is unbearable, but you guys keep saying in AZ and TX it is just as bad.  Our humidity isn't more than 40%, but 100 does feel like 120.  Is the heat that much different in TX, AZ, Kona???

I hate the heat, so I get it and probably would have been thrilled but for the 5 hour drive.  But if people had know prior, many probably would have stayed local and done an olympic.

So here is my take.  As much as I want to say HTFU and race, this is probably the smart decision.  As a southerner I train in 90+ temps for the majority of the year and 100+ heat index for a good 4+ months.  My body is used to it.  Dealing with it is a way of life for me.  I watched a ton of euros and yanks wilt in the Texas heat in May.  It’s just impossible to prepare for and borderline dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing.  That said I don’t get how y’all swim in the water temps you do :shiver: .  Given the fact the majority of 70.3 participants are “local” it’s probably a good bet that the good folks of IN haven’t been doing heat acclimation runs for the last few months. No one wants a death on their hands.  Ya know what I mean?

I get what you're saying.  I think your heat and humidity is an entirely different thing from our heat and humidity (just like I think your "cold" is different from our cold).  I visited my aunt in Dallas in late August when I was a teen, and I swore I'd never go back to Texas  It was 114 in the shade.  The pool water felt like a hot tub.

It's not cold here in the summer though, and it's been hotter than usual since May.  My husband and I were just talking about this.  I feel like I've been training in the 90s for the entire summer (normally we have about 3 weeks of upper 90 weather).  I'm not far from Louisville, and that's a hot, sweaty race as well.  I just don't see where you draw the line.  This seems to be the trend now for races up north.  Too hot and you don't get to race.

It's really too bad because I only have so many options in this area, and this will make it less likely that I will sign up for Muncie.  I hope they give a partial refund or something.

Jen- Why don't you do Steelhead?  While the swim has periodically been cancelled because of the drift, everyone I know loves that race!  Racine too!

And why wouldn't you do IM Louisville?  I didn't know you were that close.

I honestly don't know how people acclimate ... I don't think my body does in the summer.  I went for a walk today, 99 out and I could hardly breathe, it was terrible.  I got home looked at humidity and it was only about 40% ... Other than just constantly forcing your body into these temps, is there anything else that helps people acclimate better? (Hydration I know, but do you work out with a space heater on?)

And I don't like cold water ... I froze swimming in Lake Michigan the other day at 68 degrees!!!  No wetsuit.  I really like 80+ water temps, but I am not killing myself swimming right now either, it is all for fitness.

Nothing to do but force yourself out there.  Those of my friends who did really well at IMTX did every run for the last 2 months of their training plan after 2PM.

I absolutely will do Louisville at some point in the future.  It's on the list  Not too interested in Steelhead because of the swim cancellations.....I do NOT want to do a du.

So what are everyone's plans for the weekend?  I know we have a few people racing.

I'll be biking long tomorrow (in 98 degree heat whooo hooo) and run long via a split run on Sunday.  My excitement for today was that I ran over a frog (accidently) and it popped and splattered every where.

Hockey Saturday for me. Likely a good ride on Sunday. Missing out on a last-minute OWS that a few friends planned for tomorrow though...kinda bummed about that.

Morning everyone!

Just got in a long swim and am now deciding what to do about my long bike.  Its in the high 90s and there's a serious threat of thunderstorms.  Going to start riding outside and see how much I can get in before the thunder and lightening.

Back wheel hit some gravel uturning today.  Back wheel came out from under me.  Nothing wrong with the bike, but I'm a little scratched up.  Later in the ride I went flat in the back, probably related.  Fun times.  Oh BTW I need to do these training rides solo.  I totally lose track of my HR.

Sounds like you had a rough ride!  Sorry you're a little banged up.  I don't think it's entirely a bad thing that you lose track of HR on your long rides.

It must be the day for mishaps, as I had some part of the area that secures my saddle to the bike pop off when I hit a pothole on the roads.  My saddle flipped all the way back and up.  I stopped and tried to fix it, but I didn't have the proper tools (and didn't know I was missing a part of the saddle).  Rode the entire way home like that.  Ridiculous.  Now I have to take the saddle into the shop because I'm not sure what I need to fix it.  Too inexperienced.  It's also 105 with the heat index, and I was sweating when I walked out the door this morning.  I appreciate your perspective on the Muncie situation so much more now, Scott.  No way I could have raced a 70.3 on a day like today, like most Northerners (who probably, for the most part, are the ones racing Muncie).

Morning, all!  Didn't quite hit my intervals on the bike this morning, but I had a successful run, so I'm happy.  Glad to be done with all of the training for the weekend, so I can focus on packing up my house.  It's amazing how much crap you accumulate over the years.  Nothing like carrying heavy boxes up and down stairs after you've completed a couple hard training sessions.  Good stuff.

Last week I had nausea after my long bike ride (5 gels diluted in 24 oz. of water + 48 oz. of water).  Added 2/3 scoop of Gatorade Performance to my water this week due to the excessive heat yesterday, along with the 5 gels diluted in another bottle, and I didn't have any p.m. nausea and felt great for the remainder of the day.  I think I am going to keep the sports drink for the long rides from here on out.

You are not having good bike luck lately. Glad you are ok though. I have a problem with my HR when I am with others also - hard not to keep up or force them to slow for my HR.

That's a good idea for in the heat (especially on a long ride).  You don't just loose water when you sweat bucket, you loose a ton of electrolytes and need to replace those as well.

Oh Scott, hope you heal up quickly.  Be careful in the pool with road rash.

Jen, I have had that happen, luckily just came very loose, but had to get to an rest stop to get the proper tools.

If it helps I was mauled by my 15 year old niece, about 5'7", leanly built.  Grabbed me soaking wet and we ended up on the ground wrestling for about 5 minutes.  40 year olds don't belong wrestling with 15 year olds, and she plays dirty, I was trying to be nice.  The crowd at was all cheering (not sure for who) ... I am not sure why but I seem to be the target at all partys for be grabbed soacking wet by kids, getting water balloons thrown at, water bottles dumped on and hoses pointed at ....

My nephew saw all this and wanted some ... 11 and about 70 pounds ... I threw him over my shoulder and walked around and asked if he still wanted a little ....

Surprising foot wasn't too sore after all this, but niece almost tore my shoulder out of the socket ... Damn these kids are brutal!

So here is a short and quick version of my race report which I am waiting on the official results to be fixed. Hot and hilly sums up most everything. It was a 50m outdoor pool that was like a sauna. Now I know how that feels and I don't like it. Swim was ok based on that. The "end" of the swim was up the hill to transition. I was 8/12 in my age group at that point. Bike was ok. I did my first flying mount and dismount which went ok except for one shoe strap came undone and had to stop to fix. Hill after hill on an out and back course. Finished bike being 5/12. Run was ok considering legs were shot from the uphill finish into transition. Then an uphill start to the run. I stayed at 5/12 for the run. Unofficially I finished 5/12 in age group, 22/65 males, and 51/115 overall.

Fantastic job, Larkin!  Keep up the good work!  That's why I don't like to swim in outdoor pools.  They are way too warm!

Up early for a swim today.  May squeeze in some yoga later, if I have the energy.

I started reading Scott Jurek's Eat & Run.  I love it so far!  Some tasty vegan recipes in there as well.  If anyone is interested in my copy of Chrissie's A Life Without Limits, pm me your address, and I'll send my copy your way.  I hardly ever read books twice.  They have to be really good.

Had my first really solid week in a long time (except for the swim, I know, I know . . .If Bryan were allowed to post I know there would be comment on this one ):

Bike:11h 23m 58s  - 185.66 Mi
Run:6h 01m 52s  - 39.07 Mi
Swim:1h 47m 14s  - 6300 Yd
Yoga:1h 30m

This week will be even bigger.  Figure if I can make it through this week, I'll be ok for IMNYC.
