I'm going to start ramping it up a week early.  Will run 14 miles in the next 2days.  8.2 mile long run tomorrow, and a 5.5 mile recovery run on Friday.  Going Fishing on Saturday on the mighty Upper Columbia.  Should be a great time.

How in the hell are you gonna fish without beer?  I'm not a fisherman but I think that's a rule somewhere.  Do the rules you adhere to with your hockey night apply to fishing.  I would imagine that reeling in some big fish would burn at least a couple of calories?

Good luck and have fun.  Sounds like a wonderful early Christmas present to yourself.  And, oh yea, kick some a$$ on the run!

Been there - done that... While it's better to get it over with before the holidays get into full swing, I hope it doesn't spread through the family.  Get better soon!

I knocked back my share of the hot totties last week. Slept like a baby. Always felt good enough to hammer something out in the morning.

Yes, fishing is indeed exempt.  will split a 6'y of something in the pale variety with bro in law #2.  We're heading up North where the fish are big, and the people are scarce.  will also bring a flask of warm me up to keep me company and a corn cob pipe full of tobacky.  That being said, I'm getting out and away and getting my workouts in prior to Saturday.  I have to move my mom on Sunday, so I'll have a good rest day

I have a question for you my beer drinking friends... Have you ever heard of Allagash Brewery?  They are out of Maine and they make some of the best beer I have every tasted.  This past Thursday my brewing buddys and I got together for a tasting of barrel aged beers and Allagash's Confluence (American Saison) came out the clear winner (the Bruery came in second).

Have you guys ever tried some?

I never have.  I will look for.  the Saison sounds wonderful as I've only had one other and loved it.

Question for you.  What will you celebrate with if your hapless browns are victorious over the vaunted redskins tomorrow?  Will it be a minty choclatey stout?

Game on!

As a Brown's fan, I was tempted to crack a warm coors light to wash away the shame from today's game.  Those turnovers at the start of the second half killed us and just when it looked like we might sneak away with a win... not to be.  The only good that came from it is a better draft pick.  Your skins played well considered RGIII wasn't playing...

How was the fishing trip?

PS - The stout is fantastic!

I was able to squeeze in a 30 min. run today.  I'm jazzed by the fact that I was able to squeeze in almost 4 hours of exercise this week.  I think I should be in a pretty good position to start training for my half in Feb., my marathon in May, and my HIM in July.

I keep playing around with the idea of signing up for a full IM next year.  I know that a challenge motivates me and I want to push myself to that limit.  But there are two things that prevent me: 1) the hope that we could all gather in 2014 to do a IM together - Kevin and I were thinking about C'ouer D'Alene in June and if that doesn't work, I was thinking of signing up for IM Lake Placid in July, or IM Quebec in August. 2) The desire to improve my speed.  Today I clocked an 8.5 minute mile.  That is fast for me - but puts my solidly in the back of the pack.  So, I think I will do two HIM and focus on gaining speed instead.

Goals for the week:

1) Continue to record food and weigh 178 by Sat.
2) Last week I swam 500y, biked 28.5 miles, and ran 5.3 miles.  This week, I'd like to swim 1100 yards, bike 31.5 and run 8 miles
3) Stretch and ice daily

Looking good on the training David.

I am partially with Cynthia on C'ouer D'alene....I don't think I will do it but I may make the trip as support team. I don't have the urge to do an IM soooo, I am strictly support. Of course Challenger in Penticton is much nicer....Laughing

Cynthia, not sure about David, but I track my food in livestrong.

I've been eating poorly these last couple of days... there is a lot of crap in the house and all the get togethers we are going to involve beer and tasty meat products.  Not a good combination.  But I am working out again and that's got to be more than half the battle.  Tomorrow is the school Christmas party and Heidi has ordered me a steak - which I intend to eat every bite off.  Oh, and there will be beer.  LOTS of beer.

To earn the right to enjoy myself, I plan on pulling a double... 600 in the pool and 3 miles on the treadmill.

I noticed that the mentor thread is coming soon - or so it says... Really hoping to give back by signing up to be a mentor.

Night all!

Good job on getting back at it.  Hope the pain is gone.

Have fun at the Christmas party.  You're an educator and you deserve it.

You'd be great at the mentor thing.  You're a he77 of a motivator and I've enjoyed this last year of being inspired/motivated by your story and experiences.

Tough break on the game.  Will you now be pulling for my redskins to make the playoffs?

I always pull for the 'Skins.  My in-laws live in Va and a couple of them are Redskin fans, so its easy to root for them since they are in the NFC.  Also - my wife has Mike Shanahan (this is no lie) in her top five so watching a game with her brings with it certain benefits.

Thanks for the kind words about being a mentor.  For me, its simple.  You, Thor, DH, and Cynthia have been one of the most important factors in helping me to achieve my goals.  I can honestly say that I would not have made it as far as I did last year without all of your help and support.  I simply can't overstate it and I don't mean to belabor the point but I am so thankful to you and everyone else for your support.  I can't even begin to tell you how much better off I am now than a year again and I am grateful.  Last year, I was 100 pounds over weight and having chest pains.  I'd been trying to lose the weight for a decade and I just didn't have the willpower to make it happen on my own.  So, like I was saying... Since y'll have done so much for me - I want to return the favor not only by supporting you but by supporting others.

As for the party - I plan on enjoying myself immensely...

I got so emotional in my last post that I forgot to mention my workout...

I've got to say - it was a battle getting out of bed this morning.  And then, it was a battle to get out to the car... It was like that scene in Animal House where the girl passes out on the bed and the angel and devil argue it out as to what the kid should do... Devil: Go back to bed.  It's warm, you know you want to.  Angel: Now David, be a man and do the right thing.  Brutal.

Glad I pushed myself.  I got in 3 miles on the treadmill and did repeats  of 1 minute strides (ala our fearless leader) and 1 minute of recovery.  I increased the speed from 4 miles to 9mph and then back down again.  I got my heart rate up to 165 - so I was really pushing it.  Then I got in the pool and swam 600 at a leisurely 2:25... (which is an improvement over where I was last year at this time).

I'm still playing around with those yearly goals and I think the big one is going to be to improve my speed.  In HS, I ran a 2:07 800 and while I don't think I will ever be that fast again, I'd like to make it my mission to see if I could crank out a 6 minute mile again.  There is a part of me that would like to qualify for Boston because to me that has always been the true test of  speed and determination.  But that goal is years  in the future.  For now, I've been playing around with finishing times: running a 6 min mile, a sub 21 minute 5k, a sub 47 min. 10k, a sub 2:00 HM , a sub 4 hour marathon, a sub 2:45 Oly, and a sub 6:00 HIM.  To be honest, all of these numbers are just numbers I've been pulling out of the air to make myself feel good.  I've also be playing around with the idea of shoot for a 20% improvement in all of my times for the second year but there is nothing scientific about that number either...  The reason why I'm putting so much thought into this is that I want my goals to be not only achievable but to also have value.  The more I get a handle on the rational behind my goal, the most effort I will be willing to put into achiving them

Question - what are you all thinking about in terms of goals?  What advice do you have for me?

My advice to you is to set an atainable goal for each day, week month, and year, and each race, and go for it.  As long as it is attainable, it will motivate you to go after it.

My goal for today was to push an 8:00/mil pace for 8.25 miles.  I was way off, but I went for it.  It motivated me.  I ran better than the last time on this course, and will run better next time.  still pretty early in the training cycle for that speed, but oh well, it was worth the effort.  failure drives me for future success.

My goal for this year is to go sub 50 min at Bloomsday (12K/7.45mi)  Go 3:20:00 at Windermere Marathon (flat course) and go under 6 hours on a very tough hilly Grand Columbian HIM.  This will all be in prep for my ultimate goal of IM in 2014.

Speaking of which, I love the thought of us doing an IM event together in 2014.  The more the merrier.
