![]() | ![]() gobluedds - 2012-07-18 9:00 AM Yesterday's updates. Ran short in the heat. Kept it slow. Felt good except for the sun beating down. Had a pretty good wind off the water to keep the sweat evaporating quickly. HR back to normal pretty quickly. Lots of water after to rehydrate. Dreading getting back on the treadmill for long runs again. Wish I could set up cooling stations along my route Get one of these. You look like an idiot pretending to be Batman, but they are very useful on long runs in the heat. http://www.amazon.com/Fuelbelt-Endurance-Bottles-Black-Small/dp/B00... Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I forgot to tell you guys what I thought was a funny event from my trip to the carribean. My family is in line at the departure "lounge" of the resort waiting for transportation to the airport. Struck up a conversation with a guy in front of us who was there with his family and parents. Guys is in good shape, tan, lean. I notice he's wearing the latest Brooks "minimalist" running shoes. Second later notice he has quick laces on the shoes. I ask, "so are you a runner or a triathlete..." Turns out he's a Middle School principal from the Dallas area that has run a bunch of Oly's and anxious to move up to half ironmen. Run is easy for him as he grew up playing soccer. Swim's fine but gets smoked on the bike. Told him to check out the Sufferfest videos to make the drainer tolerable and to get stronger at the same time. It was funny being next to some stranger who is as passionate about the sport as me and pegging him for a triathlete within 2 minutes. |

I have one, but thanks for the tip. I usually have one bottle with water and one with Accelerade. I'd actually like to see a few places to get wet (pool, sprinkler etc.) along my routes these days. I'd take full advantage. No one out here in the sticks waters lawns though and it's hard to maintain a pool in the middle of a corn/hay/soy bean field |

![]() | ![]() I was supposed to bike an hour today as part of my taper, but didn't do anything. (Well I DID install the Shimano clips on my new Shimano Tri shoes! That counts doesn't it?) Joe Petto: you started hydrating three days before your HIM with coconut water. That for me is tomorrow. How much coconut water did you drink each day? Gabe, Taper is going fine. Not going crazy yet. Carbo loading starts tomorrow. Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 33' tempo run. The heat and humdity this morning was crazy. During peak tempo HR was MAF + 30! @Chris: I tolerate coconut water really well and enjoy the taste (except that I don't like Zico). Probably drank 3 x 16oz each day. Some people find that the coconut water upsets their stomachs so be careful. It is an efficient way to add electrolytes (especially potassium) without many calories. Master ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I found this article on Flipboard today from Greg McMillan (McMillanrunning.com). I thought it had some very useful points. http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/articlePages/article/18 Traits of Successful Runners 1) Don't Dwell There's more in the article and I think all the points are transferable to our other discplines. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ernesto, I've been having a tough time getting out to swim, the lake has been really rough. Is there any value in a OWS is surf conditions? I'm talking about 3+ ft waves. My first tri had those conditions and for safety they considered making it a DU, but instead moved the swim toward shore into waist deep water. The only reason I can see to swim in that is confidence in the OWS. You are not going to work on form, it does test endurance. Anyways, I was just wondering what you thought. |

I tried the coconut water last week and found that it really set off my stomach. So I stuck to my usual electrolyte drink instead. Potassium is important, but you don't actually need that much of it. |

I was on a huge coconut kick earlier this year - whatever brand they sell in the rectangle/cube cartons at COSTCO. I think my body responded very well to it and really think it aided in recovery. I can't get over the cost though...expensive! |

It would only add value if there's a chance for your race to be like that. I swam in Lake Ponchartrain (New Orleans) in 2010 with incredible surf and it wasn't pretty. I wish I had trained for that, especially for sighting and breathing which can become extremely challenging with waves. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 13 mile bike ride this morning 44:59. To everyone who gets up early to get their workout in, good job! It stinks, I hate getting up early, I'm sluggish, crabby, and the entire experience was drudgery. The only reason I did it today is I'm working out of town, and then we have my sister in law's 40th birthday party tonight, and I didn't want to miss another day.
