I looked at it like this. If all other genres were going to be eliminated, which would I least want to lose?

I love all kinds of artists/musicians, from Metallica (hardcore classic of my youth) to Josh Groban (such a pure voice) to Miss Saigon (stage musical) to Aaron Copeland (Fanfare to the Common Man!).

Yes, Chris, I was straight to the point. Mainly because I'm not much of a dancer

OK, I warned you there would be more questions. This one is easy. What is your favorite genre of music? And why (this is the part that matters to the psychoanalysts in the group)? None of this "I like all music" stuff either. Narrow it down.

For those that check my logs, there is some different stuff in there every now and again when I post a song, but for the most part, I am a Country Music fan.  While I may have a white collar job, I relate to the blue collar work ethic.  I find this is most reflected in my music choices. I  have been known to fish, drink, play guitar, and enjoy the occasional Friday night good time.  I also nearly lost my wife, dog, house, truck and I have missed a train in the rain, so I am the living embodiment of country music. Or not Wink

Funny that you ask this question today Chris, cause yesterday someone told me that I listen to too much angry white women music and that maybe it was affecting my attitude. I wanted to tell him "That I didn't care what he thought and to get out of my office" but I though that might prove his point I like the music of women with powerful voices think Adele, P!nk, Alanis Morisette (Salty you might need to goggle the last one cause you're too young to know who she is). But I also like U2, Frank Sinatra, Willie Nelson, Johny Cash and the odd bit of Opera and Classical.

When we were playing in the bar band it was my wife's job to sing the female songs. We stuck to "Angry Chick Songs", Pat Benatar, Joan Jett, etc.  My DW rocks "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" and hits the high notes real well. Ah, the good ole days.

For some modern angry chicks check out Gossip. Formerly known as The Gossip. Also check out Sleater-Kinney. What is interesting about them is it's a 3 part girl group and one of the girls is Carrie Brownstein (from Portlandia, the TV show)

 I love angry chick music.

All right, couple more pics before my sis and I go tearing off on another adventure--a yummy local Richard Gere-lookalike who has some very nice toys and his own Funny Farm (Rottweiler who sleeps with the two rabbits and two cats) adopted us and took us on a lake tour. I caught a really nice trout! Here I am swimming toward the Maori cliff carvings on the lake. They are breathtaking.

I miss Steve Goodman.  Wicked sense of humour.   That being said I like classical best.   Beethoven, Barber, Chopin, Albinoni; you know, folks of that ilk.  Queen, too.  They're classical, right?

Ohh man, I once stumbled across one of my friends who had just been dumped Karaokeing Alanis Morisette's "You oughta know" @ the bar.

It was really really sad and really funny at the same time. Not gonna lie, I laughed.

Okay, next year I will make this my plan. Run up my mileage in the fall to a high of 120 miles in December and then just take 10 weeks off from everything. Between the flu, sinus infection, blizzard, and now strep throat, I am done. I'll just pick up the training in the spring. :-(

Ouch, I am so sorry to see you are having a rough patch. I guess more than a patch. BTW, are you getting snow slapped again, or did this one miss you?

OK, I warned you there would be more questions. This one is easy. What is your favorite genre of music? And why (this is the part that matters to the psychoanalysts in the group)? None of this "I like all music" stuff either. Narrow it down.

For those that check my logs, there is some different stuff in there every now and again when I post a song, but for the most part, I am a Country Music fan.  While I may have a white collar job, I relate to the blue collar work ethic.  I find this is most reflected in my music choices. Love the reference to my post a while back about losing my wife, house, truck, and missing my train in Canada... (or was that not a reference?)

Also, thank you for sharing that HOT, HOT, HOT video..... Damn there are a lot of chicks in that video..

Now to answer your question...

My mood strongly influences what I listen to on a daily basis, and I go through different stages (Country, Rock, Rap, etc.) on a quarterly basis.  Overall, in order, my favorite genre's are (reasons in parenthesis

  1. Blues (The Blues / Jazz are the root of every type of music.. and THEY MOVE ME)
  2. Motown Oldies / Soul / R&B (Motown moves me...more than "white boy" oldies.  I was just discussing with my brother the other day why Motown oldies are so much better than today's music.  To me, it seems a big part is because you can 'feel' the music.  I believe these people (black people of the 50's, 60's, & 70's) were singing & performing because they LOVED MUSIC, whereas today's artists are, at least partially, motivated by money)
    • Aretha Franklin - Otis Redding - Marvin Gaye - The Temptations - The 4 Tops - Jackson 5 (purely for the talent of Michael when he was 10 - 13 years old) - Ray Charles - ETTA JAMES - Bill E King - The Supremes - Dusty Springfield - Smoky Robinson....you get the idea...
  3. Rock / Heavy Metal (Moves me in a different way, great for workouts / running and I really got into it my senior year of high school)
    • Motley Crew - Metalicca - Rage Against the Machine - Aerosmith - AC/DC - G&R - Offspring - Nickleback - The Offspring
  4. Old School Rap (because I grew up on it)
    • Snoop Dogg - DJ Quick - Ludicrous - Digital Underground
  5. Country (I added Country to the play list about 6 years ago)

Have fun with that psychoanalysts!

As a footnote - it's a very, very, very close call between #'s 3,4, and 5.. I really do listen to all these, all the time.. I enjoy almost all music.  I'm just as comfortable at a country concert as I am at a rap concert..

Ummmm Chris???  Did my list get skipped in all the side talk?

I spent a lot of time on it, making sure to not gloss over or avoid answering the question directly....

<sarc>

Now I'm feeling sad no one noticed

I'll trade you a running session for a swim session  If we coordinate it right...this could be a win, win.

I guess my most favourite genre would be bluegrass, but am pretty much open to everything bar jazz. Just can't handle it, it grates me. My most recent purchases on I tunes are Vide cor meum by Dante Alighieri and Patrick Cassidy (it's off the soundtrack to Hannibal) and an album called Go by a guy called Jonsi. He's a singer from Iceland who is better known for being lead singer in the group Sigur Ros. Mesmerising singer, can not recommend him enough, it's what I listen to when out running. So, as you can see my music choice is quite wide, like most people. I guess even if you say that you have a fave' genre, it's not really true because of the amount of variety within all genres means that we are gonna like/dislike music within that genre. I guess that is why people struggle to pin down one type that is their favourite, well I do anyway . Now, If you asked me my favourite song I could answer in a split second, or more appropriately 2 seconds by Laura Cantell. So, what's everyone's fave song?

TriAya - 2013-03-05 5:55 PM All right, couple more pics before my sis and I go tearing off on another adventure--a yummy local Richard Gere-lookalike who has some very nice toys and his own Funny Farm (Rottweiler who sleeps with the two rabbits and two cats) adopted us and took us on a lake tour. I caught a really nice trout! Here I am swimming toward the Maori cliff carvings on the lake. They are breathtaking.

Oh nice!

Very nice... I'm a weee bit jealous...

Your rainy Narrows Bridge footage is close Wink

I was secretly hoping you would love that video so much you would want to come down here and run with me during the next rain storm..  Then I could mark one more thing off my bucket list...

I'll trade you a running session for a swim session  If we coordinate it right...this could be a win, win.

Oh yeah, I love running the Narrows! I have only done it a few times which is crazy considering I have lived here all my life. My family lives over there so I will let you know when I am coming through again.
