Got 10.2 miles on the bike and 4.3 on the run. Got it all done in 1 hr 23mins. I think I could have gone a little more on my run but kids got home. It felt amazing to finally get a good ride and a good run in. Short runs are still good but I don't feel like I get anywhere with them. I'm sure I do but just don't feel it. Very cool! Every little bit helps! I managed to do my version of a brick indoors yesterday, 11.25 on the bike trainer inn 34 minutes, followe by a 2.5 mile run/fast walk in 34 minutes. Considering I'm still only 6 weeks out from knee surgery, I'm very happy. Even better was the fact that I didn't reach for the ibuprofen this morning (the first time since the injury). Here's hoping they let me back in the pool this week. Brett and Pat, great training! Pat, congrats on the 6 weeks out and no pain. After my knee surgery I took it really slow on my running for the first year plus. As for me, I got a nice run around the LSU lakes Sunday night, beautiful night. Yesterday I managed to get in the pool for a semi-quick 1100m swim. I am reviewing a new swim training tool and messing with it takes up valuable swim time. Was hoping to ride the trainer last night but my sons soccer game ran really late so no ride. So it will be a ride plus a short run with the pup tonight. Anyone racing this weekend? |

Veteran 306 | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training No racing around here but lots of skiing. We're having the 5th coldest winter on record since 1865 (boo) and the air quality has been HORRIBLE! We've been trapped in an inversion for 3 weeks. I went for a run outside on Saturday and burned my lungs - I've been coughing ever since. So we've spent lots of time in mountains at the ski hill - 32 degrees and sunny there, 15 degrees and nasty in town. And although not a great workout, skiing backwards in a wedge position for 4 hours with a four-year-old is a really good leg workout. I'm not sure how its going to help my running or biking but it cant hurt, right? Hope everyone had a great weekend! |

Member 12 | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training I have been training on a stationary bike for a Sprint Tri in May. I can do 12 without much problem here is what I (50yo) am doing now: HR - 140/147 Distance - 12mi Time - 39:00 Candence - 88/91 Watts - 137/142 Speed - 18.2/18.7mph The question that I have is what to do to be a train better: 1) increase cadence? 2) increase resistence which decrease cadence? 3) shorten distance and increase something else?.....Any useful suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Member 49 | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training Kart--The guys on here gave me the advice to do Jorge's Winter Cycling plan. I have been using it for the last 3 weeks and although I cannot speak for the results as of yet, I at least feel like I have a plan that should improve my times. I can, however, recommend it because it will steer you in the right direction and get used to what to look for while training. So far, I have been mainly doing it by perceived rate of Exertion. Here is a link to it: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=... I would love for someone else in the group to join me in doing it because, I am sure we will have many of the same questions. At first, it will kind of look like a foreign language, but it doenst take long to catch on. Its not as complicated as it initially looks. Edited by kmfioc 2013-01-22 2:44 PM |

Thanks - Dave Like km said, Jorge's plan will result in definite improvements, I did it two years ago in preparation for my first HIM (at which I met Gary) and I felt strong on the bike. That said, time in the saddle is the key, specially if you are new to cycling. The more the better. Once you get a good base going, intervals and hill repeats will help you increase speed, but in the beginning, time in the saddle will increase speed dramatically. |

Thanks - Dave Dave ... first off, nothing I saw says you're doing something wrong. Also, how long have you been cycling? If you are just starting I recommend some patience, keep on the same path and work to build your base. KM commented on Jorge's plan and this is an excellent path to getting faster. What you'll see with the plan is a mix between working at 65%-70% up to 100% at roughly a 2 to 1 ratio. Point being it's not all about making every ride to the point of puking or passing out . Also, are your HR zones based on training or some other basis? Knowing your HR zones is key to improving your performance as well. In Jorge's plan, look at the day 15 ride set, and consider doing the time trial test. There's a good HR calculator in the site here which calculates your HR zones, based on the TT data. I recommend pulling up the plan and getting to work, using either the power (watts) or HR basis. Also, be sure to take the time to log your workouts on the site ... looking at your miles on a monthly basis is good motivation once you start to rack up the distance. Extreme Veteran 701 Raleigh, North Carolina | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training Hi all ... it's been cold here for the week and I opted to swim last night instead of going with the run club. I basically wimped out, but still got in a mile in the pool which was much needed. I've got a 2-week ski trip planned in a couple of weeks and just didn't want to risk getting sick, so hitting the pool seemed the best option. Did a spin class on Moanday and am waiting for the LBS to finish up the road bike before I can get on the rollers. We've got a pretty good contingent of runners at the office who run during lunch, so I brought some gear in this week in order to join the group. If I can add another 3 miles/week during lunch - then great. Enjoy the rest of your week ... Ciao - Dorm |

Member 49 | Subject: RE: Gary's Mentor Group - Closed for Training Got some run questions. I have little running background. I did do a sprint tri in October, but really did not do many runs to maintain my run fitness until the beginning of the year because of some knee pain. I mostly just worked on studying running form and did some very short jogging trying to apply what I learned during the off season. It has worked in allowing my knee pain to go away and now I have been getting back into run training. In the past, I just went out and ran for the allotted time the BT Sprint plan told me to do. This time, I am trying to pay more attention to different things, specifically heart rate while running. After looking at this, I believe my heart rate is to high. I feel like (and my times tell me) that I am running at a slow pace. I think I need to do some run/walk to get it down until my body is ready to jog all the way through. I think part of this is that I am trying to get my cadence up and because I am not used to it, it is driving my heart rate up. But my question is, How do get my max hr for a run? And at what % should I do my runs in order to build stamina? Should I stay in this zone for all of my runs until I build a good base? I feel that heart rate training will play a factor in me preventing more injuries. I tend to work too hard on runs because I am slow. i need something to hold me back. The pup (not really a pup anymore) made the three miles like it was nothing. We are planning a trip to Vero beach for Mardi Gras, should be fun. For my swim I finally have the setup right with my MP3 player and headphones. I don't do every swim with music but its a nice diversion. |

This week is just not really pleasant. And the weather people don't seem to know what's going to happen from one day to the next. Tuesday was supposed to be cold but sunny - we ended up with an inch of snow! This weekend is going to be yucky too - I was hoping to get out for a run but we'll have to see what the weather ends up like. Cold is OK, ice pellets are not, LOL! Training has been going pretty good. I've come up a little short overall the last couple of weeks but everything feels good, most days I look forward to the workouts and I feel like I'm getting back to where I was before my surgery. Had a good run last night and swim this morning. Yoga class tonight. |

We are supposed to be cold and wet tomorrow and clearing tomorrow night. If all goes as planned I hope to actually hang up the keys Saturday and ride to work. Hopefully it will make the last day of inventory a little more enjoyable. It is a nice ride with a few hills but mostly flat. I am still trying to get my bike just right. I can't afford to take it the LBS right now so I am going mostly off feel. Maybe a 14 mile ride will help get her dialed in. |

Does that mean that I'm really not pushing myself during the run? I've found that when I swim and bike, I also have a fast recovery. Can you define "recover fast"? Is that HR based? If so, I would say that your cardio system is in better shape than your running legs. I would like to hear what Mike says on this one.
Also when you say time goal is that "I am going to run for 30 mins" and you have trouble making that or is it "I need to run 3 miles in 28 mins" and you have trouble making the 28 mins? Either way if your runs are always rough you need to slow your pace. I go by "distance first, then speed" so you should be able to cover a set distance comfortably then worry about speed. Mike? |
