Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I was supposed to meet my mother on Friday to get my middle 2 kids. Yesterday she called and said Madge has been crying a lot for me. We had to move the switch to this morning, so I get to drive 3 hours today. Hooray! LOL Funny that she's been crying for me when it seems like she hates me lately. I mean, she tells me she hates me at least 3 times a day (yes, my 4 year old is a DIVA). Hip and glute feel a little strained today. I'm going to have to run easy the next couple week. An injury would really suck right now. I might hit the pool for a long swim after I get the kids in bed tonight, but we'll see. I'm really unmotivated to workout after 8 p.m. Anyone else feel that way? |

It's odd that way." most people end up walking an Ironman" I have one goal for IMLP, bike so that I can RUN the marathon. Could you explain that, please? Sorry, I'm a complete noob when it comes to all this stuff, but I'm curious. In a word: Fatigue. Running an open marathon to the best of your ability is a very painful affair. Becuase the intensity is, or should be, so high, it's a real challenge to hold it together over the last 10K. But that's because you are working in a more anerobic zone of effort. By the time you get to the run in an IM, you are very fatigued and even though you are running at a more aerobic effort. Instead of sharp pain in your legs, your legs feel so heaviy you just start to go slower, and slower, and slower. The trick is to not slow down too much. Forget trying to negative split, it's more about survival. When I train for an open marathon, I train for both the distance and the pace, which is much more aggressive. When i train for an IM run, I often will run when fatigued in an effort to acclimate to it. It sort of works but very little can prepare you for how you are going to feel for that run. |

It's odd that way." most people end up walking an Ironman" I have one goal for IMLP, bike so that I can RUN the marathon. Could you explain that, please? Sorry, I'm a complete noob when it comes to all this stuff, but I'm curious. Its the reason all of my long runs are on Sundays after a long bike on Saturday and then another bike pre-run on Sunday. The whole point of those runs is to get through them while keeping my HR up. The problem lots of people have with IMs (and HIMs too) is that they go too hard on the bike and aren't able to run to their ability on the run. In an IM "gaining" 10 or 15 extra minutes on the bike will likely cst you 30-45 minutes on the run. Take Shaun, for example, at IMFL in 2009 he biked a 5:30 and then was so cooked that he walked the entire marathon (a 6 hr plus run time). The "extra" 30 minutes he gained on the bike probably cost him 90 minutes on the run.

Its done wonders for my body (and its a really good core workout). |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LOVE yoga for my hips, upper quads, and glutes. Even if you just go for a few sessions and steal some of the poses to incorporate into your normal stretching routine it would be worth it. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ah, we have a couple sprints out by me that have 1000-1500-2000 people and the swim is in something similar to a quarry with lane dividers and they send you off every couple of minutes. The run in is horrible cuz you only have about 2-3 pool lanes width and the first turn around is almost an all out fight, then it thins, but you get people walking the turnarounds. Nice thing is the bike and run courses are totally closed. There are about 30 waves in these races with about 30-40 in each wave. One of these is a women's only and they are totally brutal in the water regardless of ability!!! |

![]() | ![]() jarvy01 - 2011-07-13 1:27 PM Your races are speed work. Even then no need to do traditional speed work, pick up are plenty. Get in the volume. You have done a lot in your first year and a Mary to end the year is a big race. Dont forget to recover - that is when you get stronger.jsklarz - 2011-07-13 7:28 AM jarvy01 - 2011-07-13 7:04 AM 12 mile long run this morning and then speed day at pool tonight. Ick. I added the Towpath marathon to my schedule (Oct. 9). The race runs in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. It's beautiful! I have 7 more weeks of triathlon training, and then my tri season is over for the year. I don't want to get hurt trying to do these long runs, when the triathlons are more important to me. I think I'm going to incorporate some walk breaks into these long runs to reduce chance of injury, then I'll get rid of them after my oly tri. I'm not going for a time goal at the Towpath...just running it the first time. I know Paul and Terry are racing this weekend. Anyone else? Look at Galloways plans, he is the guru to run/walk a mary. The key to running is increase slowly, 10% rule. Also, your long runs should be slow (1-2 minutes per mile slower than goal race pace). No need for speed work, just find a hill and every week run up and down it until you hate life. Link to Galloway's site: http://www.jeffgalloway.com/training/marathon.html Did a 5:1 ratio today, and it worked out great. I will probably phase out the walk breaks once I'm done with tris for the season. I just feel like 14-18 mile runs take too much out of my legs right now, when I have triathlons every other weekend for the next 6 weeks. So, yes, no speedwork for me right now. Lots of hills. |

![]() | ![]() jarvy01 - 2011-07-14 4:32 PM I generally fall asleep with a kid after booksYoga - my wife does tons of yoga, that and hiking a her primary forms of exercise. I do it sometimes. For bikrum (hot) yoga make sure you go to a real bikrum studio, otherwise it's just ashtanga or vinyasa in a hot room and you won't get the benefits of the bikrum method. I personally think yoga is likely the best method of exercise you ccan do, particularly a good power yoga class. You work the enti body using body weight and stretching. 90 minutes of power yoga and and you will hurt. It's also a great core workout. Off season I try and do yoga or pilates also good, 2x week. I do not like spooky-witchy yoga where you chant , hold hands and breathe, and speak in sanskrit which is big in bikrum, hence a reason I don't do it. It's all about the instructor. This off season I think I'm going to do a lot of bike training and cross fituhcoog - 2011-07-14 3:37 PM jsklarz - 2011-07-14 12:29 PM jarvy01 - 2011-07-14 7:50 AM I find it nearly impossible to train at night.
